Growing garlic at home is easy, but remember to harvest the scape Support the channel: www.etsy.com/s... / suburbanhomestead Garlic scape soup recipe included. Created by: Siloé Oliveira
the better way to harvest your scape is to hold low down on the plant and pull the scape straight up; the white part that has not been exposed to sun is a delicacy and you are leaving that part unharvested
I'll try this method next year. I've always used a knife because I didn't want to harm my precious garlic but if it works, it might actually be safer without the knife!
I was so inspired by this video that I planted hard neck garlic last fall so that I would have scapes. I am going in my garden this morning to check my garlic for scapes. I noticed them yesterday so I looked for this video as a refresher. Can't wait to try them! I'll have a new garden experience. Thank you!
I left my garlic in ground from last year...... which was a mistake since it multiplied and is now crowding in a 3x3 raised box bed. They will be removed and planted in long rows to re-establish with room to grow and plenty of time to root before winter comes. Even though the crowding caused them to be small, they are still useful and delicious! I don't even have to mince or slice them, rather just peel and use them whole. My lack of diligence has caught up with me yet again ;o)
@@suburbanhomestead your video prompted me to get out there and get it done. Nearly a 5 gallon pail worth! They will be rehomed this evening when the temperature gets a bit more below the current 90°f. Seeing how many I actually have to deal with is mindboggling, I'm only one person........ But they can be sliced, dehydrated and ground to powder to preserve next season when they've gotten bigger.

You can also make a simple knot with the remaining leaves after taking the scape off. Enhances the bulb grow and is easy to identify where are the more advanced (or the more delayed) ones. Great channel.
After your last garlic video i was lucky enough to find scapes at the local farmers market here in eastern Canada, and ate them / pickled them before they went bad on me. Been waiting patiently on your garlic harvest, that two year promise back in the day has been weighing on me since! Glad to see a great harvest :) Also, split pea soup is a godsend! nom nom nom
I love to use my garlic scapes as well! I put them in soups, stir-fries, salads. I'm loving all these recipes you post, Siloe, that have split peas and lentils in them. It's such an underutilized niche of food in my house. It encourages me to be more creative in the kitchen, and gives me more ideas of how to use the harvest in different ways. As always, your videos are so peaceful and beautiful!
Yum yum, split pea and garlic scape dish looks delicious! I have only grown soft neck garlic so far. After watching your RU-vid publication showing growing patty pan squash, I immediately ordered seeds and now have a lovely crop coming on. The patty pan have been so easy to grow, and I can't wait to harvest and enjoy eating them! Thank you Siloe for the inspiration.
Hello, I was searching other homesteading channels when I found yours. Very inspiring to me that anyone can do it. We are in the process of buying land and searching for our forever property. Lets connect and hope you stop by, new friend here for sure.
Very good. So this was educational. I did get the scapes off. I just didn't know what to do with them. I wonder if they store good in olive oil cut up in a jar. I wouldn't be to that much at once.
@@RussellBallestrini I just went on line someone is making garlic butter. Freezing it with other spices. I think now to flash freeze in cubes. Then get only the amount you need out of it.
I’ve always enjoyed ur channel, I’m from Maryland also ad we purchased a house last year and decided to start a channel to document our journey, so far I have about 12 uploads, I have no editing skills and I’m very new to RU-vid as a brand do you have any advice for me? I really look up to ur style of videos I can jus imagine the time u put into them.
Sausages, I will miss out on the scapes because I only got the soft neck ones this year. Must put on my, things to get list, hard neck garlic, then hopefully next year we will be eating scapes because you have inspired me to try. Would growing them on the window cill or hanging them in a basket from a frame avoid the bugs you was talking about ?
In this case they were transplanted close the November/ december. They were starting to re sprout by themselves all together and I just pulled them out and re spaced them.
@@suburbanhomestead I just found a few rounds about the size of my thumb under my carrots, forgot I planted them there, going to try to replant them later this year
