This video is an update on our system of growing biomass willow on the septic system. This is a simple regenerative retrofit to a very old septic, that produces significant amounts of fuel on nutrients that would otherwise be potential pollutants.

I have basically the same set up but I use poplar's, those whips are great for cooking and heating...

I plan on running my drainage field under prairie dock, bamboo, willow and other grasses for the same reason, but underground. Not for heating, but mostly for mulch and composting.

Sticks are great fuel for rocket mass heaters! I'm going to coppice hazel for ours.

We have hundreds of hazel planted, but they'll take longer than the willow.

Interesting and will be interesting to see it mature! Do you have to leave the sticks to dry out (before burning it)? I'm guessing you couldn't straight up burn it !?

Yes, all wood needs seasoning to burn well. But thin whips like these wouldn't take long.

I have both. Do you do the same with the poplar as the Willow. I would love both

I've not used poplar myself.

Does this setup pass the smell test?
@CairnOfDunnCroftPermaculture

Not fully. At the end of the day it's still an outdated septic system. But I can live with it being less waste and pollution.

@@CairnOfDunnCroftPermaculture could you intercept the outflow and divert it into a biogas digester? i would imagine all the nutrients would still exit, but some of the more volatile smelly chemicals might end up being burnt with the gas. unfortunately, officially you need a licence to be a bioogas producer in England, dunno about Scotland, but I'm sure you'd find a way of hiding it if necessary.

Slight odour! I don’t believe you. I was once trapped in a room with you after your breakfast of 6 boiled eggs. 😷

But this is like being in the room next door to me eating eggs!
