Hi Jeff, another great video. Chris here from El Dorado Hills (9B climate also) again. I'm learning some good stuff from you. I have a 15 footer in the ground that was planted before we bought our house about 16 months ago. The plant flowered last spring and for sure it was full of flowers by this time last year. There were little tiny fruitlets a couple months later but the tree dropped all of them. Not sure why they dropped but I've learned so much since then. I'm watching my water and fertilizer regime big time now and I think I have 4 times as many buds this year. One thing I surely can't do is control the extreme weather here. It is both too hot and too cold but a healthy plant goes a long ways! I'm hoping for a few fruits this time that stick....I have no idea what kind of avocado this tree is but it is a grafted tree so it's likely one of the ones that can survive up here. I have 4 little trees in containers also that I'm growing. They survived this winter so far but they got a bit beat up from the wind. I ran small old school Christmas lights on them all winter and covered them with frost blankets on the coldest nights...so far it has worked. I very much appreciate your knowledge sharing for our shared climate!

You don't ever have to worry about fertilizing if you just put down compost and cover with woodchips once or twice a year. Good Compost has all the nutrients pretty much all plants need.
@TropicalGardenGuy
@TropicalGardenGuy Год назад
In many areas, that is true. But in a garden with many plants and trees growing, a bit of fertilizer helps.
@nateross14
@nateross14 Год назад
@@TropicalGardenGuy Oh for sure, I just posted that because alot of newbies think that nothing will grow without fertilizer. If someone is planting in poor nutrient starved soil, sprinkling a little compost on top won't do much right away and a store bought fertilizer is great for a quick fix. But long term, it's far better to invest in making ones own nutirent rich ground with mostly just woodchips or other chopped up organic matter and compost, using the no dig ( back to eden) method. Put the time in upfront with compost and wood chips and you free yourself from constantly worrying about how much to fertilizer to use, or worrying about if you can even buy it when a crisis hits like what is about to happen with a world fertilizer shortage due to the Ukraine war.

Yea, I shoulda mentioned the importance of compost… I covered it in another video. But it is almost a necessity!

It's been a wacky spring here on the west coast. My unheated greenhouse, that houses my avocados, has yet to get above 63F! The bacon was starting to flower around this time last year.

@@TropicalGardenGuy we are having weird weather here too. Supposed to be getting lots of snow over the next day or so, maybe up to 6 inches, which is rare here anyway but even rarer in March 🥶

Just started growing indoor avocado plants from seeds about a year ago, what's the recommended pot sizes and at what point should I start fertilizing them?
@TropicalGardenGuy
@TropicalGardenGuy 5 месяцев назад
Depends on the size of the tree, but I start with a light fertilizer about 6 months after planting

How would they in an area that is heavily shaded in the winter? I want to plant one on my south fencr but between that low winter sun and 7ft fence it is deeply shaded until mid afternoon. It would full sun in the summer and even more once it's taller than fence
@TropicalGardenGuy
@TropicalGardenGuy Год назад
I havent ever grown them in full shade, dappled shade might work if full summer sun is achievable

When do you recommend removing the nursery stake from an avocado tree? We planted in summer and was wondering when to take it out
@TropicalGardenGuy
@TropicalGardenGuy Год назад
I loosen the tie around the stake in stages as soon as the tree seems stable enough to hold its self up in high winds

I’m jealous! If you can find a store bought avocado fertilizer that’s best to follow directions on bag. I feed mine 1 cup, 3 times per year or 3 cups 3 times per year of the organic type fertilizer

Sorry I im just a home gardener.. But if may suggest, put a seedling into the ground now, I may have a garden tour later in summer, I may give away budwood. or if you contact the crfg San Jan Joaquin chapter, they have experts that may assist.
