People just have opinions about everything and nothing. Nice healthy plants you got there. Just keep doing your thing.

Did you make a video on how to prepare the trash can? I didn’t see one. Do you drill drainage holes?

Yes, drainage holes?
@Growyourheirlooms
@Growyourheirlooms Год назад
@@winnielane Yes I did do a video. But it's simple. All I did was drill about 6 holes in the bottom using 1/2" Drill bit
@Growyourheirlooms
@Growyourheirlooms Год назад
@@michelep4340 Yep. 6 of them about 1/2" in diameter

I personally think that some people TRY to find something wrong with what others are doing . If it works for you and you can't see any issues with it, then go for it. It's something we call FREEDOM. Garden is looking great and those Tomatoes are looking very happy and healthy. I might have to give this a try myself.

I changed out all my raised beds to galvanized beds at least 5 years ago. I was so tired of the wood rotting. My garden is doing great. I haven't tried cans yet, but now I will!

That's what I thought. Companies are selling metal growing planters but these cans are bad??

I started growing Opalka a few years ago because you mention them. They might be 'paste' tomato, but has one of the most amazing texture of any tomato. It does seem to require atleast 10 days headstart before the other plants though since the seedlings seem to grow slower.

Yeah, it is slow to produce but well worth the wait.

Do you need to fill your trash can completely with soil or can you do something like Hügelkultur and fill half of it with decaying wood and yard waste?
@Growyourheirlooms
@Growyourheirlooms Год назад
I filled them completely with soilless mix. In my next video I will explain that in detail

I need to search to see the soil your putting in it. I do nor have much room for composting or moneies so thinking perhaps I can get some food soil instead.

It's a long story, but my poor tomatoes are making due with little 6 gallon food grade plastic left over landscaper pots.. the 10 different heirlooms did ok last year, though I suspect they would have been happier in bigger pots or in the ground. My favorites were the Red Zebra and Cherokee Purple.. We'll see how the hybrid Big Beef tomatoes my neighbor bought for me to raise for her do in these pots this year for comparison. We put a thin layer of wood chips for drainage by the holes in the bottom, then high quality soil mix from an organic certified operation, then a thick layer of wood chip mulch on top. All in 6 little gallons!

I tried 7 gallon one year and didn't have much success. Going to the 20 gallon is a game changer

Quick Question: Do you have any trouble with the galvanized containers that are in the sun becoming overheated? Thank you, I appreciate your time and advice.
