experimenting, trying to get buds as low on the trunk as possible by double cutting some seedlings. i suspect you can just wait for the stem to get a little more woody and then go for the first cut as close to the needles as you want. i think having the buds so low you'd be able to thicken a small formal upright with lots of low sacrifice branches so the taper will be exaggerated.

I don't quite understand why you're taking cuttings unless your growing the root half on aswell.

I'm trying to see how small i can get the space in between the root spread and the first bud that will start to extend from the trunk that could end up being the first branch of my tree. the part of the stem with the roots connected that i cut off will not grow a new bud like deciduous species. the part of the stem with the needles above it will push out new roots that will be even closer to the first set of needles than where the roots are coming out at before i cut them off. we will compare the two later.

@@DarthMasiah so its kinda like air layering a lanky deciduous bonsai?

Hi there, Thank you for sharing your technique and experience. I’m afraid of scaraficing my defiling bc I have not done well with cutting to date. I find balancing humidity and sun exposure challenging. Either I dry them out or cook them in sunlight of loose cuttings to rot. Any thoughts on watering amount schedule, moisture containment and sun exposure schedule would be much appreciated. I’m also curious who makes the plastic tube like planter. Seems perfect for growing exposed root trees. Thanks again and best in your growing endeavors

everyone loses some when trying the seedling cuttings. after i cut the seedling and put it in the substrate, i water it real good and usually i don't water again until i see the middle needles start to elongate. i stick my cuttings in a see through tote from walmart with the top on for awhile. the humidity will build up big time and you just check it every so often and if you don't see water beads and or the soil top looks very dry, just give them a good misting. they don't need direct sunlight until they've started growing strong again. here's what i did: www.bonsainut.com/threads/jbp-from-seed-for-the-1st-time-the-force-is-not-strong-in-this-one.40009/post-863722 i can't remember what website i ordered those tree seedling starter cylinder pots from. there were a lot of different sellers.

Hallo Pak,izinkan saya bertanya.Kenapa harus di potong dan apa manfaatnya?Terimakasih untuk waktunya.

If you cut it, the root spread will be closer to the first adventitious buds that come out of the trunk, making small bonsai easier to develop. If you don't cut, it will grow strong and tall and the distance between the root spread and the first buds will be long, so to develop a small bonsai you'll then have to do a lot of bending to make it shorter. If you're trying to grow a large bonsai, over 12" maybe, you don't need to worry about seedling cutting. This is more a optional technique for people growing mame and shohin size pines.

Hi I purchased some evergreen pine pinus halepensis seeds well one has sprouted 5weeks later. Iam from the UK and keep it in my kitchen window most sunny area but iam not sure thats ok, and I have a testudo hermanni tortoise in my other downstairs room next to kitchen so his basking light keeps downstairs dry humid and hot we keep a fan going also sometimes. What should I be doing at this stage with my bonsai its about 5weeks and 3days old sorry for long text want to make sure I get it right. New subscriber great content.

hey 👋. aleppo pine is from the Mediterranean area, so they like lots of sun during the growing season. you could try bringing it outside a little at a time at first to get it acclimated to the stronger weather, until eventually leaving it outside. I'm in a agricultural zone 8a, so my pines stay outside year round, no problem. year 1 you only have to worry about keeping it alive.

Hey thanks for the reply. how long would you say for the sun for when it's outside as its been indoors and should I use a dome too. And do I use a fertilizer in the 1st year. Iam Glad I found your channel took some digging lol but I got there.

you could start at an hour and slowly increase over a months time if you want to be super careful. i start feeding when the seedlings first start pushing growth.

bonsai soil and sand on top. out of 200 seeds i tried popping this spring, barely a 100 came up, and less than 50 made it through cuttings. you never know if the seeds are too old or duds. don't blame yourself all the way 😊 www.bonsaijack.com/shop/premixed-bonsai-soil/universal-bonsai-soil/2-quarts-inorganic-bonsai-soil-mix/ www.ebay.com/itm/141962734418
