I'm so happy to have found your channel! I have a retirement nursery started from cuttings, and they're about 2 to 3 years old. I have approximately 3,000 plants, but I've always wanted to grow Japanese maples! I want to do a lot of bonsai in my older age. I'm 63 now, but in relatively good shape, and I'm so excited to get started next year! Thank you for your info! I'll be bingeing the videos!

That tote is a great idea. I propagated my first Japanese maple cuttings last year as well by making make shift plastic tents... I had quite success to my surprise but I wanted to try something different this year. What I mostly wanted to change up and try a verious soil mixed. But the idea with a clear box gives me even more to play with. Greetings from Germany

I really enjoyed watching this video, and learned alot of information. I am growing (zone 7A) a 1 year old Japanese Maple Bloodgood sapling. I started this from a seedling that grew in the mulch, under the host tree. The host tree is a beautiful red color, but the baby is green. The baby tree is now 28" tall with beautiful leaves, and I have it growing in a very large pot outside, in my shade garden. I have it staked to keep it straight. So far, so good.

New subscriber, I have a big beautiful Japanese Maple that was mature when we moved here 19 years ago. My neighbor and I let a little one grow in the runoff ditch between our properties years ago and she eventually dug it up and planted it behind her house. When she was planning on selling her house, she told me to take it, so I have it and it's doing great 14 years later. It looks much different than my other tree that it came from, but it's beautiful. Will be watching more of your videos as I haven't had any luck with taking any of the small seedlings. Thank you in advance!

Not sure where to put it over the winter. I'm in south central Pennsylvania. I'm wondering if it would do ok under my covered porch?

Hi there. I just found your videos today and I'm glad I did! This is the first year I've ever tried growing from seedlings. My original maple is over 35 years old, so I collected 8 or 9 seedlings this spring, planted them all in a rectangular planter, covered them with screening to keep rabbits away, and left them outdoors under the original tree. I'm wondering what I should do with them over the winter...I'm in Massachusetts, zone 6a. Winters get pretty cold. Should I bring them inside and keep them under a grow light? Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

My tree didn’t give me any babies this year so I might try rooting some. I was dog visiting for a friend who had to go away for the day and I noticed a baby under hers and scooped it out. It has its first true leaves. It’s a real beauty, when the sun shines on it the underside of the leaves look pink and the trunk has a papery white trunk like a birch.

I have a little success (about 30%) of the total seed started growing. However, It seems like some of them starts dying since two weeks ago. I have a question, It is now the beginning of Fall season. Can I start pulling them out from the tray and re-planting them in a 4 inch pot? Thanks. I am also a Christian and attend Southern Baptist Church in Fresno, CA.

I am glad to hear that you enjoyed this video! I would definitely plant these out into 4" pots ASAP. I actually pot them in the spring, but now will be fine in you warm climate. As for the dying, if they are getting too much direct sun, that may be killing them - are they under shade sloth (50%), or protected from hot afternoon sun?

Thanks - what is you zone? Japanese maples are hardy in zones 5-8. Generally speaking, they are fine to be kept outdoors all year long. Potted trees may benefit from winter protection for those in Zone 5 when extreme cold comes (or late frosts that may damage initial leaves).

Hi, I'm new to Japanese Maples. I've just bought my first one after seeing one with striking red leaves. But the one I bought is a Palmatum Trompenburg, deep purple leaves, green in summer, upright habit. It is just about 1 meter high with 3-4 stems, so must be about 1-2 years old? Anyway, I made the mistake of not giving it enough shade, so on one of the bright hot days (in the UK), I think the leaves got sun burnt and some turned white. I've watered it, and now built a protective shade around it to keep off the direct sunlight. Hopefully it will recover and grow. It's a slow growing type and should reach 6 feet high in 10 years. I wanted a shrub rather than a tree, to add more contrasting colours to my back garden.

I have propagated some trees and shrubs, but don’t know how to arrange them on the property. Most landscape designers are working with squared off boundaries and a need for privacy, but that is not my situation. I also have no need for added privacy as I’m surrounded by woods. Can you point me to any good sources on the subject? I read a book on basic landscaping and took away from it that I should plant my gardens where I can see them. So I now have two plantings floating in the middle of the property that can be seen from windows in the house.

During the winter, you should use a lot of mulch, leaves etc. to insulate the pots, or bring them to a warmer environment. While Japanese Maples in the ground will grow in cold climates, potted ones need winter protection in zones 5-6 or you will see some not make it through the winter.
