It's been warm here these past few days. 60s in Feb! World is crazy. So looking forward to spring and hopefully the weather stabilizing. I lived in the bay area briefly when I was younger back in 2002 and then 4 years ago i was in Rotner park Sonoma valley for a few months. I love cali for visits. I'm to much of an east coaster. I tried using insect screen in small pots, I got the idea since I was making air pots using two laundry baskets, and the soil was easily pouring out. It worked very well not only in the homemade air pots, in the small pots the plants were way more healthy than they were without the insect netting. I think that it not only helped prevent the roots from sitting in water, that the roots got way more air as well.

@@GardenloveHomestead I am not as much in real time as you are, like I am having pomegranates fruiting for the first time this year, so far two varieties have fruiting flowers, even though I showed some flowers on my facebook. I will not show all the flower photos until I have enough flower photos to explain the pomegranate flowering process very well. All 3 types of flowers, where each flower type can bloom on the plant and when each flower type can produce or abort. The shape of each flower type and so on. I am very excited at the thought of growing loquats because the fruit not only sounds great, and very unique, the country where most of my known family lives (Malta), it's a very well known fruit there, that a lot of people there eat. I am currently trying to help rescue two varieties from Malta, over 94 year old trees, one of which if it's still alive would be over 147 years old, the trees are being looked for. Recently I found out about a loquat that can fruit after a freeze of zero degrees Fahrenheit. That is one variety that we could actually graft it on to a root stock in the ground here, rather than in a pot.

Very nice! Thanks for your video. I was just given a 2' 3" tall loquat plant in a small container (8" wide, 7.5" deep). I know these can grow big as a tree...so I went and got what looks like the same wine barrel in your video. I intend to put casters on the bottom of the barrel to make it mobile as well. I was wondering how many holes and how big did you make the holes for drainage? I've also heard that I should transplant to larger and larger pots gradually. This is so the water gets to the root ball instead of the water running off to the sides of a large container. Have you heard this before? If so, given the current size of my loquat...am I jumping the gun by putting it into such a large pot (wine barrel)? I've also heard that there are organic soils for flowers & vegetables and yet a different soil for trees & shrubs, but I can't find what the difference is. I have seen the soil for Cactus, Palms, and Citrus trees & shrubs, but I had thought there was another for trees and shrub and not specific to Cactus, Palms, and Citruses. In northern CA, is this the right time to transplant? Looking forward to see how your re-potting comes out.

Hi, thank you for stopping by. You have alot of great questions. I will try to answers them as best as possible by typing. I do have a video name how to grow citrus in containers with my eurika lemon. Alo of the rules apply to the loquat. 1. Yes yhe wine berral is was to big for the size of your loquat. I would put it into a 15 gallon pot anf in a year into the wine berrar. It is true about the water running off to the sides. Think about it as shoe sizes. You always go just a little bigger not 2 to 3 size bigger. 2. Regarding the soil, loquats aren't that picky. I used citrus and palm from EB stone. I love their soil, their quality is great and the drainage is perfect for loquats. They are other soils for fruit trees, I just can't remember which vidoe I used it in. 3. Where do you live? I am in souther California. If I wanted to, I would repot my loquat right now or in the biggining of spring. Dont wait to long, avoid doing it to close to winter. 4. Regarding the draining holes I would do them dime size for 15 gallon pot and quarter size for wine berral. As many as you can fit approximate 2 to 3 inches apart. For the wine berral about 4 to 5 inches apart. I hope I answer your questions. I have several vidoes on repotting trees, they will add more tips to this informations. I also just trimmed this Loquat anf made a vidoe about it, just incase you want to see how this tree is doing. By the way, congrats on your loquats. I love loquats 🤗. Do you know what kind of loquat it is? Is it a seedling or grafted loquat?
@enufots4621
@enufots4621 6 лет назад
Garden love Thanks for the quick response. I've also watch some of your other videos. Lots of good tips. Unfortunately, I did not have the knowledge to ask any questions about the loquat when i got it. But, i sure will find out. I've got a strong feeling its from a cutting though. Thanks for the tips on soil, pot size, & drainage holes as well. I'm in the Bay area - Silicon Valley. Weather forecast indicates that it is gonna dip into the 70's in the next 5 days. Ok, i think I'll re-pot them right away into a container that's bigger. Btw, your loquat tree is looking great!
@enufots4621
@enufots4621 4 года назад
Wow, time flies and a year has gone by already. Well, I re-potted the loquat into a much larger planter but not the half wine barrel. The container is tapered: 27" diameter on the top and 20" tall. I think that's approximately a 25 gallon container. Unfortunately, my friend doesn't know what kind of loquat it came from and it was grown from seed. It is on a dolly so i can move it around in my back yard. The questions I have are about watering and fertilization. How much & often do you water? What do you use to fertilize and how often the loquat? The plant is now 3' 4" high and 3' 6" wide. It had it's 1st pruning last week. Lol Now, you can see the main stem at the base.
@FknNefFy
@FknNefFy 3 года назад
It’s not till the water gets to the root ball cause if you water above the root ball it will get to it it’s because of nutrients in the soil being all rinsed out before they are able to be used by the plant and some plants like to be a little bit root bound. A lot of people ask questions like how many holes or how many times a week do you water your plants but all these things depend on too many variables to answer to be correct for everybody. Just see how your water drains after you water it if it’s not draining we need more holes. If you have to water it every single day because it’s draining too fast and you need less holes. It depends what kind of container you have and how quickly things evaporate if you have a cloth container you’re going to have to water it more than if you have a solid plastic container it depends on if you, have mulch etc.

Would landscaping fabric work for the same purpose as the netting? I feel like the netting would be too porous. Would the landscaper's fabric retain too much water, you think? And thank you for this video. As a kid my family grew loquats, among many many other fruit trees when we lived in SoCal. In a fit of nostalgia, I ended up buying a tree for me and one for my mom for her birthday. The problem is though, we now live in Minnesota so the loquats will have to remain potted and need to be taken inside for the winter months. Also; this is my very first foray into gardening so this video is incredibly helpful.

BrokenImperfect Good morming, thank you for watching. I am glad you found it informative. I love that you have your childhood memories and it's bringing you back to them by growing fruit tree. That is the same reason why I started. I've tries the fabric. It does hold way to much Moister. I repotted a citrus that had the fabric and I am so glad I did. It was starting to get root rot. You can just triple layer the net. That will help and make sure to add rocks at the bottom or water bottles like I did, and plenty of drainage holes at the bottom. I hope that was helpful. Keep me posted. Have a blesses day.

Hello Diana, I want to repot my citrus, pomegranate, stone fruit. I was wondering if you recommended the same soil blend? Also, where can I purchase that soil? I went to Home Depot and they don’t carry it. I went to amazon but it costs more to ship than the actual product itself (checked for the sure start and it doesn’t qualify for amazon prime ). I appreciate it.

I would try to go to local nurseries. Most nurseries carry EBstone. Are you in the west coast or east coast?
