In our How to Grow Chinese Vegetables series, we take on Napa cabbage!
Napa cabbage is a versatile vegetable that’s great for long-term storage, pickling, fermenting, stir-frying, braising, adding to soups, making dumpling or wonton fillings, and even serving raw. So is it worth growing at home?
Here we talk about our experience with some common problems growing Napa cabbage at home, our observations, some cooking tips, and a bonus recipe at the end.
For more information on common varieties of Napa cabbage, growing and harvesting best practices, and how to do your best to avoid common problems (of which there are many with this crop, as we soon realized!), head to our blog post:

I've been enjoying your website for recipes for years now, so I'm really thrilled to see you guys are now also making "how to grow" video's as well (since I've been trying to do some vegetable gardening ever since covid started and I needed something to do for my daughters who were at home for 6 months with no school during the 1st wave). It's been way harder than I expected, and as you say: you do start to have way more appreciation for farming in general. Thank you very much for all the wonderful recipes over the years. Yesterday, I made your spicy noodles recipe (the one you make with spaghetti) and my youngest ate 4 whole bowls of the stuff. Even her picky friend that was over totally loved it. You are the best !!

also, from what I heard from (way more) experienced vegetable farmers, the insect net is definitely the easiest solution to most problems you have with ANY cabbages. "If you use a net, then all you have to deal with are the slugs..." Ugh, slugs, they must be the most hated animals for any vegetable farmer...

My husband and I are closing on our first home in a few weeks and we are considering growing Napa cabbage because my husband and I are are crazy for kimchi. We would be growing out of Virginia.

Fall planting brought zero pests for me in Tennessee. Planted in mid August and harvested in November

the intro is so true i had napa cabbage and bok choy in a big rectangular pot behind my window sinds it was still to cold out and they were growing beautifully until i put them outside and made the snails and slugs very happy, needless to say i never had any napa cabbage or bok choy.

Your discussion of how heat affects Napa explains why the prices at North Carolina grocers have exploded this year, even at Walmart. I buy it a lot because it stores as well as cabbage, is a flavorful substitute for sandwiches and salads and is rarely a recall issue as with Romaine. I’m just now digging into your channel after seeing the daikon video and I’m enjoying your family story. Thanks.

Nice informative video. Thanks for the tips. I like making kimchi, so Napa cabbage is the only one I have my heart set on growing. Looking forward to your other videos.

Fall is a better time for planting Napa cabbage. Your mom is right, late fall napa cabbages are sweeter.

Hi Amazing video. Im really big fan if napa cabbage. Really like kimchi. What is the best variety for kimchi ? Have use few varieties this year but on the end kimchi is not very crunchy - is more actually softer. Is it related to the variety?

Kimchi stays crunchy until it gets more fermented, at which time it will inevitably get softer. Are you making sure the kimchi is submerged in brine at all times? If it’s exposed to oxygen that could make it mushier
