We are going to do something different for the "gift season" this year & made up some cuttings of pepinos to share with family & friends.. We decided that the best gift is one that people can enjoy for many years & encourage them to get into the garden.. They needed some time to grow so thought it best we get a head start & hopefully a few will be flowering by the time they are given out..
For more regular updates about the patch come visit & "Like" us at / bitsouttheback
Have a great one..

Its nice to have a helper in the garden , as long as they are not a clock watcher . I reward my kids for helping 🤑

Pepinos are original from Chile, you can grow them in any tropical area, you need to grow them in a sunny morning and shade in the afternoon an you do it by cutting with soft soil and water them 3 times a week till mature plant.good rain help to grow quickly.if you Ike to use a big pot and grow them like that instead in the ground then make sure you use good soil.

Have noticed that with other cuttings we have taken.. The plant we took the cuttings from has about 4 low branches that have taken root in the barrel so will try to peg down the branches to propagate them from now on.. Thanks & have a great one..

Thanks!!! Adding to this!!! The best way to root any cutting is to sprinkle water on the cuttings and put em in a dark place for 3days then plant them....darkness works miracles .

I did some cherry tomatoes this summer and it went well. After seeing this I am going to take cuttings on both my rosemary and lavender thanks to you. Wish we had pepino in Chicago.

Thanks Dale... That's how I did the rosemary & lavender last time & had a great strike rate (until I forgot to water them).. Am going to try again now as I would like to plant some in the front garden come the end of summer... Thanks Dale & have a great one..

Hi Rob! I just got some cuttings in the mail and have set them in a jar with seasol! So exciting, i hope I also get 100% success rate like you did! I've never tried pepino melons before!

Nice one PL.👍 They would have to be one of the easiest fruits to grow for us. Unfortunately we lost our plant not long after moving back home when the renovations were finished. Will be getting another down the road though. Cheers & happy Harvesting.

Looked good to me Rob. I propagated rosemary from the fresh cuttings that I bought in the herb section at the grocery store and had great luck the only thing that I can see that I did differently is that I did use the rooting hormone and the cheap little propagator that I use has a plastic cover/dome over it that holds in the moisture and creates a little greenhouse environment. So maybe if you covered them with plastic or put them in a plastic bag. Just a thought.

Thanks Mike... Think we will try to strike in water or the aquaponics from now on... So far the aquaponics cutting have had a much better success rate than any we have tried in soil.. Thanks for your suggestions & help too.. Have a great one...

Honey have untifungal properties only in UNDILUTED state due to its ability to remove water from microorganisms by the process of osmosis- if diluted no osmosis - it is a best food for bacteria.

It was interesting seeing the difference between the water and the soil group. I have seen people use the zip lock bag method that one of the other commentors mentioned and it seems to do well also. Thise pepinos look good I may have to get some for my self :)

They like the warm weather here so suspect (but not sure) they might be an annual there.. Good luck with the cuttings..

& really easy to do... I do think that layering might be a quicker way to propagate them now after seeing the plant do it all by itself.. Have a great one :)

I haven't needed to use any rooting hormone (or honey) to clone my pepinos, just cut them off at the node and stuff them in the dirt. After a week they are wilted, and after another week they've grown roots and back to health. In the wild they will root wherever the nodes touch the ground and get covered over, so it's not really a hard plant to clone.

Yes, Tomatoe cuttings went well and i gave a few away when they established themselves, i think it worth dedicating 1 or 2 beds just for propagation and having a small greenhouse type set up over the beds but not the F/T and i also need to use 1 G/B with smaller medium in it for seed raising, although its done magic with the hydroton but i have found some smaller seeds sprouting in my biofilter. Ciao

These cuttings were kept outside as they were taken at the end of spring here in Australia.. They were just left to fend for themselves in the garden & did fairly well.. I think it would be a good idea to bring them in during the cooler months there & maybe try to take some cuttings closer to next spring.. Hope that helps some, Rob :)

I just used raw honey to dip the stems in.. The plants that I have struck since didn't have any honey & did just as well I think.. Hope that helps a bit.. Rob..

I missed that bit out in the clip.. thehittmann1981 mentioned that to me elsewhere so I took 5 of the pepino as well as some rosemary & lavender.. Lost 1 rosemary & 2 (I think) pepinos.. Will show them in the next update.. Will probably do most like that now but in the constant flow ½ barrel.. Will pop some sage & thyme in tonight to have a go.. Have you tried tomato cuttings in the AP ?? Thanks Mick..

as a follow up, I took a second set of cuttings now at the heat of summer, and it seems most of them have wilted and not recovered, I suppose the extra heat caused them to dry out before they could root. I'm going to try rooting the next set in water as you seemed to get good results that way.

Hi Rob The water striking method works well less chance of fungal invasion. Whilst honey is a good natural rooting aid.& anti fungal you may have had too much activity in the compost/potting mix.... I'd suggest a sterile growing medium coco peat and fine bluestone gravel or just bluestone gravel .. I've has success with both of these with fruit tree andvine cuttings.. Keep the updates coming... like your style and helpful suggestions. Your assistant does a good job too!!! Regards Mike Warner

I didn't shield them so I could see what was going on but next time I wll.. Just water in the jar to start off with & they did fine.. I did add some seaweed emulsion after the roots started to develop just to help feed them.. Hope that helps..

Hi Rob have you done the experiment to see if strike rate is dependent on the honey as a rooting hormone as apposed to using a commercially available rooting hormone, also I am interested in how you grow your Pepino are they in wicking barrels as I just got three plants and was going to put mine into wicking barrels as per your design from your videos. Thanks another great video. Andrew

Hi there Andrew.. I haven't done any backyard tests with the honey VS gel.. Have just been sticking the cuttings directly into the aquaponic grow beds of late & had 100% strike rates with most plants.. I think the pepinos would really appreciate the newer style barrels we make with the larger reservoir capacity.. Sorry it took ages to get back to you mate.. Cheers mate & hope that helps some... Rob.

Hi Ricardo. Sorry for taking so ling to get back to you. Our last productive plant give us around 20 fruit over a 3 or so month period before I removed it from the aquaponic system. I just found it was getting too invasive so it had to go. I have another in a wicking barrel at the moment but it's not doing the best as I've neglected it but it has had a dozen or so fruit form on it this season. Cheers.

Im trying the water method to sprout roots but i added the honey dip to them and put a little rhizotonic. Done some carolina reapers and some haboneros. Will be doing my pepino when it warms up a little bit. Question for the pepino though do you have a lot of trouble with little pests or root damage with yours?

Hi Rob, I enjoyed your video. I just took some cuttings from my Pepino plant here in California and decided to use your method. I realize this video was made a long time, but what is the name of the seaweed solution you applied to the cuttings? Is it store bought, or do you mind sharing the ingredients? Great video and a great garden you have!

Hi There, I live in the UK and bought a very small pepino - they are very unusual here and noone I knew had ever grown one before. It did really well as we had a very good summer - I am trying to take cuttings and found your video interesting. Did you keep them in a greenhouse and then put in a cold frame? It may not be a good time to take cuttings now as it is nearly th end of October but I thought I could treat them like houseplants and keep them indoors as our last two winters were severe.
