We are mid October here in northern Michigan. Since I have no animals to care for, it is only the gardens that are prepared and tucked away for their long winter's nap. Winters here feel never ending, harsh, brutal and mentally punishing at times. Your radishes are a reminder that regardless of how each day now sends us closer to winter......it also brings us closer to spring! 🌱🌱🌱🌻

I love cooking with radishes. Quartered and sautéed with peas in the spring time. Sliced into coins and added to Asian style soups in the last minute or so, or roasted with other root veggies or all by themselves. When cooked their flavor changes to a wonderfully sweet treat, especially with a little carmelization. I also love using the tops. Radish tops are some of my favorite greens to cook with in the springtime. They're not quite as good raw, but mostly because their texture is a bit prickly, but they soften up quickly when cooked. I can never get enough radishes.

I love your ideas for cooking; I just go out to my radishes and pull them out, wipe off the dirt and eat them, tops and all, in one bite ❤ the tops help dim the zing enough that I could just eat thwm all day long!

I’m an unapologetic seed hoarder. I also have about 9-10 radish varieties myself. I have had success presprouting but they grow just as quickly direct sewing in my experience. Radish sprouts are great in salad and as a slaw for fish tacos. I’m growing the green pear radishes right now for the first time and I can’t wait to see how they taste. I roast the French breakfast ones and watermelon radish in a breakfast hash with winter squash, root veg and apples. Yummy!

Thank you. I am way older than you, retired last year and planted my first vegetable garden. Radishes are suppose to be easy but mine didn’t do well, guessing not enough water. Will work on that this year. Love your flowers. Have had tons of flowers for many years and start a lot of them myself.

Oh! I thought I HAD to direct sow radishes too, and then I saw Charles Dowding multisow radishes in plug trays, which is actually brilliant because five small seeds/plants fill the soil with enough small roots to keep the plug intact so you an plant before the roots are so big that they start coiling around the edges! I tried it with both radishes, 'Snowball' turnips and beets and it worked!!! I just planted the groups of radishes about 4-5inches apart in stead of direct sowing them and thinning them to a inch apart. They grew so well, bugs didn't bother them because they were a bit bigger when I planted them out, and I've never had better radishes (but I'll admit that was probably mostly because I planted them out the first week of august in stead of in april-may which here is usually incredibly dry. And I suck at watering..🙈) so apparently they didn't mind being started in small "pots"! Check Dowding's video out, it's called multisown radishes or something like that. 👍 Although, if you are the kind of person who succeeds in direct sowing radishes without killing them - which you obviously are - keep on doing what you're doing! 😛 Thanks for another fab video! 💕

This fall I tried several radish varieties. French breakfast and cherry belle always work. But I added watermelon, champion, early scarlet globe with great results for all....but man a few were beyond spicy and down right hot. So those I roasted to mellow out.....yummy results! TY for another lovely vlog. Zone 5b Chicagoland.

Hi Siloe, I did not particularly liked them, but last year I learned the best way to eat them. Good fresh French bread or sliced bread with butter and than top it with thin slices of radishes. Lots actually. Yuuummm! I love them now.

Try roasting them like other root veggies. Or substitute them for potatoes in stews. They change their flavor when cooked.

My radishes never even leave the garden.. I always end up snacking on them while I'm gardening and just throw the tops to the chickens lol

Also they are the best for making cough medicine. Just chop them up, mix them with warm honey, smashed garlic or onion and lemon let sit one night and you'll have a rapid recovery.

My mom had a garden when I was a little kid. We moved when I was around 12. She never had to worry about what to do with her radishes. I was constantly in the garden eating them. :P The peas also suffered at my hands. :D I wonder how well they would indoors in a sun room or something with temperature control. I live in Texas and have many days over 80F. - Heidi

Can I ask how much space you have, roughly, in your garden? I'm just about to move into a suburban place of my own in that has a garden here in Northern England, and I just wonder how far the space goes. Your garden seems to be so full of different things. Great channel, by the way. I like your music.

Full lot is 2000 sq meters. but most of it is in shade from tall trees and buildings so I use about 100 to 150 sq meters that is the sunny front garden

@suburbanhomestead

It may be a little bit harder because carrots are slower growing. Other plants will crowd it out
