We’re not doing a DIY today, instead I’m testing out a little food growing experiment. I saw a TikTok posted to Pinterest about taking your store-bought scallions and sticking them in a jar of water and supposedly they will successfully grow for a few months with no intervention and only changing the water once a month.
I wanted to test this out for myself for several reasons. First, the scallions I bought from the store had been in my refrigerator for a few days and I didn’t know if that would affect the growth. Additionally, the roots were all but gone. Lastly, though I can’t prove this, I think they were likely grown in dirt, so it seemed odd to me that with all of the above stacked against them, that these little plants could thrive with some tap water in an old spaghetti sauce jar.
The first couple of days they were on the road to proving me right. Over-night they fell limp, started to yellow, and withered at the tops. The next day was worse. But somewhere along the line they found their form and just when I was about to throw them away I realized they were starting to revitalize! A few days later and they were going strong, the roots grew a lot, and once I trimmed the dead leaves away they stayed upright and only withered at the very tips at the cut marks. I’m posting this video a week and a half in and am excited to see how long they last!
