Today we’re painting a blue and gold gilded piece that I’ve had up in my head for a few months now. I haven’t ever worked with sheets of gold leaf before and I was hesitant to try the inaugural use with a piece that I really wanted to get right. But in the end, I decided to go for it and spent several hours (condensed into a few minutes for you to watch) creating my masterpiece.
I’ll be honest, it didn’t 100 percent translate head to canvas and at some point I might try to redo it to get out what I wanted to create. But it’s still quite a cool piece and while it’s not what I thought it would be, in a way it almost more honestly portrays what I was trying to express.
The original idea was a blue/grey/white grid system in the back with orderly ‘pixels’ of gold leaf breaking away to reveal the design beneath. But implying a sort of chaos that can’t be controlled. What I got, was gold gilding that can’t be controlled. Honestly, I like it. It’s just different from what I thought it would be.
So notes on the gilding. This is not real 24k gold leaf. And if it was it’d be in my safe, not a painting lol. I’ve heard it’s really difficult to work with gold leafing and while I still wouldn’t know from personal experience, the sheets I used (I’ll link them below) were (in my unexperienced opinion) a close facsimile. They were metallic and delicate and so thin. I really enjoyed creating with them and hope to continue to do so in the future.
