Out of the seeds I planted, only 2 out of 6 failed to germinate, which is pretty good. These seeds were planted in mostly potting mix with some clay loam wild dirt from the local Southern Californian hills applied on top later in this starter episode. Clay loam is a mixture of sand, silt, and clay that's heavier on the clay side than the other two components of dirt. Clay particles are tiny, flat particles that congeal together due to electrostatic properties or water surface tension like a sundried brick if you have no larger spacers such as organic matter, silt, sand, or rocks present; thus I would not recommend sifting any wild dirt you bring in through a strainer. I'm convinced that if I started with pure clay loam instead of potting mix, my plants would all be way bigger by now.
The Latin/scientific name for this vegetable is Beta vulgaris, a double misnomer in my opinion considering that this vegetable is neither beta nor vulgar looking. Swiss chard can be harvested for multiple crops. Maybe in another month the earliest true leaves will be big enough for a harvest!

Most people missed the fact that swiss chard like acidic soil so adding a 50/50 mix of ericaceous soil and multi-purpose compost will help seed production swiss chard also don't mind and being seeded directly into the ground or in multi-purpose compost there is no need to use seedling compost. It also helps only to water them with rainwater as rainwater is at neutral 7PH but for better fertiliser uptake lower the PH down to 5.5 using either vinegar or a desired hydroponic pH down solution. First-time growers of swiss chard and first time eaters bear in mind you can eat the leaf and stem the stem can be used just like a carrot or celery and the leaf can be used light a spinach leaf you can eat it raw or cooked. Also first-time growers grow the white variety as they are more forgiving and have less desired taste. Happy growing and remember try not to use liquid fertilizers use manure seaweed homemade compost and leaf mulch from your local woods.

Organic all purpose fertilizer and compost in a bucket with water will make a water soluble fertilizer "tea" in low strength for seedlings. Apply in small amounts. I use about a quarter cup per gallon and several handfuls of compost. They love this and will get stronger and taller faster. The fertilizer needs several days to breakdown in the bucket and go from pellets to liquid. Stir frequently.

Wow! I was disappointed about the growth of my swiss chard but mine are only 2 weeks old and are bigger than yours at 31 days. Perhaps it's my growing medium. I started my seeds using 1/3 each worm castings, peat moss, and perlite. Then thransplanted them to a container filled with organic soil and worm castings in the hole. Great video by the way...thanks!

Maybe it’s the seeds? I planted mine pretty Willy mildly directly in the ground, I never transplant anything or take the care you do, and mine are pretty big.
@KaribeCuebas
@KaribeCuebas 4 года назад
@@hannahfitch8977 Actually, mine are doing great. I was just wondering why mine looked so much larger at two weeks than his at 31 days. I've not had any problems with mine. I cannot germinate mine outdoors since I live in an appartment that only gets 3-4 hours of sunlight per day but I have large containers on my patio. Once they became large enough, they've handled the parcial shade rather well. ☺

You need some perlite in that dirt to give it better aeration and when you water it won't compact down as badly.
@SilverStarFour
@SilverStarFour 3 года назад
I usually add a lot of perlite to my barrel beds outside. I find that my plants do a lot better when I dump a whole lot of perlite in and mix it up well with soil for vegetables that I get from Home Depot. Plain potting mix that you buy at the stores just doesn't seem to have enough in my opinion for adequate drainage. Better to mix your own if you can though.

I’ve learned it’s not good to spray the middle of plants like that because the roots will not grow properly.The water needs to be all around to encourage roots to grow out and down. Not sure if it applies to small plants. I’m having trouble with cantaloupe seeds.

@richardportelli1983 5 лет назад
They are in the same family as beetroot and grow the same way with a large root which I believe can also be consumed but not 100% sure on that. You should try using non sterilized compost or potting soil as plants required the microbes and bacteria to feed otherwise they would need constant synthetic fertilizer.

I have had similar results with potting mix for all of my seeds this year. I'm going to mix in some regular dirt like you did and see if it helps, our soil is clay like because I am in NE Ohio.

Bacteria and fungus is good and beneficial to your plants, you don't have to waste time and energy killing your soil, you need to inoculate it with a symbiotic culture.

Dude your soil has quite big lumps in it which could be clumping up under the surface stopping the seedlings from pushing through. If I am ever running low soil I will put the seeds in a small amount of multi-purpose compost in a small hole about a thumbs width and a thumbs high.

the biggest mistake i made was to grow my swiss chard on in a plastic bin with a grow light. For some reason they grew super tall. Like so tall that they can't handle their own weight where just watering them crushes them and they die.

Baking potting mix?? That is really over the top, some of these "parasites" work together to protect the surrounding growth and restore minerals, etc. Sterile soil is dead soil - natural life is what creates great healthy vegetables. It is a miracle that a couple of seedlings sprouted.

What ever happened to the mango plant?is it better to plant swiss chard seeds directly outside in soil or is it ok to start indoors and transplant outside?Thanks so much
@KaribeCuebas
@KaribeCuebas 4 года назад
Hi, I plant mine indoors and then transplant when they already have 2-4 true leaves. I personally do this because otherwise mine get eaten by bugs or just don't do well altogether. I recommend using a grow light though otherwise the get leggy and are less likely to do well.
@ineedstuff8286
@ineedstuff8286 3 года назад
yeah I heard that they dont “prefer” transplanting, but as you have found, I also like starting indoors due to control of conditions. This is my second season, and I have grown various brassicas... these I find... how could i say this... they seem a bit harder to grow then things Ive grown so far
