I visit my friend Jumanji Jon (Instagram @jumanji_jons_plants), a rare tropical plant collector and relatively new seller on Facebook. In this episode, we talk about growing tropical plants in low humidity and high temperature environments.

Super thoughtful to immediately translate Fahrenheit in Celsius for us Europeans! Thank you Jimmy!

It’s so much work! Ppl don’t realize it’s 24-7 with plants. Always something to do or needs done. 💚

Some do realize, and opt for no plants, cacti, or [shiver] fake plants.

Cooling radiators are better than humidifiers, because they use evaporative cooling which lowers temperature and increases humidity. Most nurseries use it on a much longer scale. The system may even operate with sea-water since it is not used for irrigation as long as the water is replaced before it becomes too briny. It can therefore operate without fresh water in coastal regions.

It’s a STRUGGLE being a plant fanatic in a climate that isn’t favorable. In my turn it’s the cold winters and lack of light half of the year that’s a real challenge (Stockholm, Sweden). But that doesn’t stop me somehow! Just wanted to say the background that your home in the beginning of the video looks so beautiful with the plants! Good job with that!

Thanks so much Felicia. I live in a pretty favorable environment for tropical plants so I'm pretty lucky. Cheers!

Thanks, Jimmy. I grow plants in a really dry place, like he does, and its a lot of work. I enjoyed the video. Thanks once again. Be well and stay safe.

After a long dry winter, my plants are basking in the relative humidity of 75% right now here in the midwest. We only get a few months of this each year, but they are going to love it. Then it’s back to refilling the humidifier on the daily.

thank you for this! I live in Riyadh Saudi Arabia and our weather is extreeeeeemely dry. I have two humidifiers running in a small room, it gets annoying because I have them on almost 24 hours for my plants to be happy and growing

There are heat tolerant aroids like philodendron cordatum which was p. Angra Dos Reis named after a oceanside municipality in Brazil where it was found and syngonium podophyllum cultivars. Lots of aroids come from low elevations. Just dont try to grow cloud forest plants at high temperatures. I also grew p. cordatum in Colorado as a house plant in very low humidity.

We don’t have an AC in our house as it’s over 80 years old so it gets in the low 90s inside and 100 outside. While it’s only May I already have to water my plants twice a week because it’s super dry here.

Use an evaporative/swamp cooler to add humidity. It won't cool like a refrigerated air conditioner, but it will raise the humidity and make things a little cooler.

brother it's actually better adding a automatic misting system with a water tank with a floating ball valve connected to the main water supply.. and you can just program it to mist every 1 hr for a minute or more.. you can just get a booster pump used for ro systems and diy it.. that's wat I do for my my terrarium shop where I have like 20 plus setups.... mosses ferns and other tropical plants

This morning in Phoenix was 8 % humidity. It will be maybe 112 by Friday. I can't keep the humidity up, even with the humidifiers.

I’m in Vegas so I feel this pain. Scorching hot summers, cold winters. I am very careful with buying plants and don’t bother with tropicals as badly as I wish I could have them.

I can't even imagine how hard it is to grow stuff in Vegas. It's hard me being there even as a human when I'm not in an AC'ed hotel ^_^

I live in California but closer to Vegas and this has been a big learning curve for me! I have "drought tolerant" plants that are recommended to be watered bi weekly that dry out weekly.

Living in what is considered High Desert Idaho I have just decided to stick to the plants that do well here and not fight it. I think I am a lazy gardener. :( I have a front porch that easily gets 100 and my plants do well out there even in the high heat as long as they are well watered. This year after the carport work is done I hope to put many plants out there but it is mostly shaded all day so not sure if they will like it as well as the scorching front porch. I do have full length shade cloth curtains. They can only stay out there 3 maybe 4 months then I have to bring them in again.

A DIY humidifier using something like a 10 head cool mister/vaporizer in a large rain barrel with holes drilled into the lid for exhaust and duct tape fan blowers should produce a lot of humidity and capacity for a garage with the door open. I have two small cool misting heads in a 5 gallon bucket with a fan blower duct taped on the lid. I'm in the arid Sacramento area where the humidity outside in the summer and fall is in the mid 20s to low 30s and although those two misters are not enough to keep the humidity above 30% in my starter greenhouse, I think a 4th mister and second fan should bump it up to 45% outside in the greenhouse on 100 degree days. Indoors my humidifier can keep the humidity at 50% no problem. In the laundry room it gets up to 70%.

I'm in the San Gabriel Valley where we have very hot summers. Though I used a room-sized humidifier when I grew orchids back in the day, I no longer use it for my houseplants. I'm thinking they will either adapt or die. So far, they're adapting. I also don't grow high humidity loving plants. At least I don't think I do... interesting series! :)

Thanks for tuning in. Just figure it's an interesting topic, and to shed appreciation for those plant parents who live in difficult environments. SGV certainly counts lol. Cheers!

I live in a remodeled attic and I totally get watering all the freaking time.... It can get 40 degrees hotter in here than outside, when it hits 90 outside.... me and the plants are wilting in unison

Can drill a hole and use drip from a larger reservoir this way just fill in the reservoir for the humidifier

I Have a less expensive one and it gets the job done. I just recommend get what works for you expensive or not.
