Great video. I too am a BBC and proud of it. Never fully English or Chinese. In the UK, I am Chinese. In HK/China I am British. Used to bother me feeling Like a foreigner in both places, but it doesn't anymore. Just come to accept it. In HK, locals think I am too polite, especially when I hold doors for people. In UK, people think I know kung fu....Whataaaaah, and also believe I can't see things properly as I have slit eyes.
Che Ng haha I can SOO relate to you. You made me laugh out loud at the “watahhh” - ironically though, I do martial arts! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. Let me know what other sorts of videos you’d like to see. I might do some more on being BBC etc. Let me know, and subscribe if you like 💜
I agree, great video. Your comment made me think of my work colleagues who are mainly Pakistani. When I talk to older people and when I talk to young - like me - :) they say the same. The young ones, when they go there, they are seen as British, but in UK considered Pakistanis. For me, I think it's nice to have an identity. As an English, I don't really have a race, as we a mixture of many wars!, so we we have to just write 'WHITE' on documents. haha. This annoys me!
Hey Nina, Really awesome video! A very delightful and informative watch. It was really interesting to see the perspective of a fellow asian but from the UK. There are so little Asian British youtubers and seldom do they talk about their experiences growing up with 2 different cultures. So please keep making more videos! I also saw your Tedtalk haha you are so cool 😅. Anyways much love from Australia!
David Vuong Ah David! What a lovely and thoughtful message. Thank you so so much. Let me know what sorts of things you would like to see more of, and I’ll try my best to get it out there. All the best, Nina
@@NinaNina-bs8sx Wow thanks for replying Nina. Yeah for sure if I think anything I'll let you know. Oh by the way I hope you don't mind but I kinda sent you a message on Google plus/hangouts. It's kind of embarrassing 😅 so if you can ignore it that would be great hahaha.
Hi Nina, really glad to hear your distinct voice as a British Chinese. I'm Chinese with 8 years of study experience in the UK, USA, and Australia. During my extended time study period (I'm doing my Ph.D. now at the age of 27), Brits distinguish each other based on their accents. That is to say, if you have a British accent, you would be regarded as a Brit, whereas someone like me with a mixed accent would be considered as a foreigner. Since you have a perfect British accent, I am curious to ask you a question. After COVID-19, do you find British Chinese encountered some certain level of discrimination and bullies in their workforce or in their life? Greetings from Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, China 🇨🇳🇨🇳🇨🇳. ❤❤❤ 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
You and History Behind The Warrior sound so cool. I'm glad to see England changed like this as when I left it was lack of Flavour. I haven't been there in years but next month I'll return and check it out I'm from Birmingham West Bromwich, West Midlands. I'll sub your channel. Props to you.
It would be interesting to see you do a video in Chinese, its interesting how in different languages you can come across like with a different personality and facial expressions etc
My Younger Brother’s Friend/My Friend Named Ian Hua Is From Long Island In New York State In America But His Parents Are From China!!🇺🇸🇨🇳I Think Asian Girls Are Pretty, and That British Asian Accents Are So Interesting, and Sound Different Than The Usual British Accent, and Your Accent Is Great, and You Are Very Pretty!!😍😎
oh, your parents are from Suzhou..i'm from Shanghai, but I have learned Suzhou dialect myself. Hopefully, I will speak Suzhou dialect with you lol amazing
Hi Nina, hope you're well! This video is very interesting and I can relate to it a lot being a BBC myself. I'm glad there's more asian representation on this platform. I've recently started making videos again and I'd love to connect with you (I think we go to the same uni!). If there's a way to message people on here, then please dm me :)
I moved to London when I was 3.5 years old and lived here for five years, went back to China for five years and now I'm back again so I'd say I have a similar albeit different experience from you.
Xinyi Huang thank you so much. I’m not sure what other videos I should do/ what content people like to see. If your comment with some video ideas you’d like to watch, I’d be grateful to know!!
@@NinaNina-bs8sx I really like this kind of chit chat video/talking to camera sharing life video, can like casually updating interesting things in life - just like talking to friends:)
Glad you find it funny. Being a British born person of different ethnicity is a topic I am interested in. How they cope with the dual identity. My relatives in HK call me a banana, yellow on outside, white on inside. I like being a banana. To all my fellow bananas (abc, bbc, bbc) be proud, love yourself.
Che Ng yes I’ve recently familiarised myself with that term. “Banana person” they call it! Thanks so much for watching and for your lovely feedback. Hope you’ll continue to watch x
I am currently based in HK now, but i do miss rural UK. I used to live in Somerset, in a small town near Glastonbury. Miss the beautiful countryside, the serenity, fresh air and sheer amount of space. HK people can sometimes "take the mickey" out of my average cantonese. I reply in an oriental tone, me so solly, i no speakee chinesee. That gets them laughing.
Che Ng Hahahah! Love the “oriental” tone! No way did you live in Somerset- that is where I live... I live in the county town... we can’t have lived in the same town? Surely? That’s mad!
You said you are more British values-wise but you somewhat lean towards traditional Chinese values when it comes to family orientation did I hear you correct? :)
Eugene Koh Hi Eugene. That’s correct. Generally, am more British value orientated. However, with family, I do agree with the Chinese values in terms of respect and selflessness.
Great and informative video, however must correct you, they do eat dogs in China, restaurants with signs are also obvious, westerners eat animals too , am personally against eating dogs and cats, as i consider it unsanitary, but to each, his own choice, am surprised you haven't researched this before replying
Deidra Dahl As I’ve said, it’s likely they eat it in some remote places in China. But where I have lived, that’s never been the case. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video :)
