Africa is the continent with the highest percentage of children with AIDS, orphans, forced to work nine hours a day for seven days a week in prostitution or suffering from various types of slavery.
Various NGOs and private institutions make everything they can to help these children. We will approach them to see some of their efforts they use to help them.

Even though I did not grow up in Africa, I don't think all of Africa is like this. Just like other countries, there are the rich sides and the poor sides. You should show a side of both, not all of poverty. Africa is really a beautiful continent, the people, the food all are amazingly beautiful.

@Fred Wilkerson You really need to leave your comfort zone and come out of your ignorance. First Africa is not a fucking country, it continent. This so called documentary is extremely biased. Only one country out of fifty four was featured. The country is one known for human trafficking on the continent just like other countries on other continents. This documentary should be taken down for being offensive, biased and racist.

Some of the things they are putting out are true, especially modern day slavery, but what the westerners forget is that there are modern day slavery everywhere even in America and Europe. Also remember they used such lies to fool big organizations and to silicit money for their pockets and but not for helping those in need. Africa need to unit to over come this

This documentary is showing poverty and that is viewed by someone people as negative labeling. I see this as an opportunity to share and help the ones who can’t help themselves . It brings awareness of different issues of the world . Thanks to information as such I was able to fundraise and do great thing for children I’m Tanzania. The title of this video is really misleading. I was born and grew up in Nigeria and most of what is shown here is localized in some places and it exist in most countries even in USA. In Nigeria, I enjoyed my childhood unlike what media shows. My parents are not even middle class and my friends were not as well. We did not own a car but we had enough to eat, share and be happy. We never went for expensive vacation but were still happy. About HIV/AIDS, we never had that in Africa before the 1980s. HIV/AIDS was introduced into Africa by some people. So showing Africa as an HIV/AIDS ravaged continent is misleading attempt as if the disease originated from our society. .

I grew up in Africa, mostly in the towns, we were a upper middle class family. But would also live in villages sometimes. In the villages all the people lived off their big gardens, full of maize, beans, plantain, fruits like jackfruit that the west doesnt have. Nobody ever starved, But well, like some commentors said, we are hated all over the world &they always pick few isolated situations and make these kind of documentaries, to show that we are not worth anything. This video is PURE IGNORANCE. The Producers should be embarrassed in 2015 with so much access to information and with the ease we now have to travel and get first hand information and experience this is the shit they put together Id be ashamed to have my name of such a poorly put together distorted documentary. Its the equivalent of having a documentary called growing up in Europe and only showing poverty stricken places in Bulgaria and combining all the statistics on issues on the whole of Europe to backup ignorant statements. Why not show the whole spectrum but always aim for the lower end?? Nonsense Am breed and raised in Africa and had all my needs met, not wants but needs. This kind of documentary should stop, it's the reason you get foreigners make stupid utterances in a bid to strike a conversation with you as an Afrcan when you meet them abroad!

+Instructor Jay I guess they want to help the kids in need. But it's true that they could also show positive things. Africa is so interesting because every country is different. +Ask8maniac, I guess I was incensed by some parts of the film that I overlooked the positives. Interesting to know you can name that number of countries in Africa, and do not know it as one country, like some others. I actually live in Canada now, and had some ill informed people annoy me from time to time. Thanks for you input though

@Fred Wilkerson Its also amazing how butt-hurt people can get and writing a whole paragraph to reply to a few words. We're not being "race card cry babies". If you left your rock that you're living under, you would know that black people are racially hated so they have every right to complain about it. And it's not that they're not smart enough to feed themselves, they are in poverty and it's hard to find food. That's just like saying you're not smart enough to have a shower or a bath when you don't have water. The world is having problems because of people like you so shut your white ass up.

I do when know where to being with this video. I actually thought clicking on this video would be some what insightful factually. But all I've is Aids, Slavery, Prostitution. Do you really want to inform the wider audience of what it's truly like to grow up in 'Africa'. Images and ideas you've shown feed the imagery present in our mind about 'Africa'. Why do you neglect the lives lived by others lived in 'Africa'. People are convinced that this is how 'Africans' live. Why not perhaps develop a video on how Africa got to be the it is. After all History helps provide somewhat if a narrative for the present.

Why not make a nice documenatry and show the beautiful side of Africa?? This documetary should be named "Growing up in slums" not "Growing up in Afirca". Like that's just so rude. Because Africa, as a whole, is the poorest continent in the world. Of its 54 countries, the vast majority are third world. The richest country (in terms of gdp per capita) is Seychelles whose gdp of about 23 000US$ per capita is less than half that of the American gdp per capita and more than 10 000US$ under the European average. Documentaries like these help shed light on the REALITY of Africa, although yes they could be more specific.

This happens in Africa especially in Togo, Bénin, Ghana and Nigeria. Growing up in Africa (togo) my parents were given girls to take care of at different at the time until they reached the age of marriage. . My mom had 2 boys and needed help in the kitchen especially doing laundry. Most of the girls were family of my dad's cousins kids ect. They lived with us and were taken care of and my dad paid the family every month. I do understand that some of the girls don't have the same experiences and it's very unfortunate.

Darker skinned folks in America like me try to research their ancestors home country on youtube and find this and much much worse all the time. I wonder how many people in Africa are aware of how their country is being presented in America? Black people in America are told everyday that everything in the above video is our heritage. I don't know how to feel about it. I respect my heritage and am proud of the good things that i can imagine but do not get to see of our people.. Well thanks to the media i guess. No matter if Africa truly is that poor and desperate of a country you have to respect them. It is your blood. - Look at how the media treats Bernie Sanders here lol, that's stone cold proof of how they censor all the good things that people need to see for a better society as a whole. - Look at the world map and draw a line around allll the foreign countries in the middle, and the group of countries under Mexico and Guatemala and all them. There's clearly more darker skinned people majoritying the earth AND more varieties of us than there are "white countries". Think, even though Russia and Greenland are bigger "white" countries (don't get me on country vs. continent i'm not that smart yet but you get my point) it is just a few of those vs. the Mexico regions, India, China, Middle East, and African regions. And America was the big Native American country (and should still be remembered). - Whatever the misinformation is, we shouldn't go pushing complete blame on "white countries" either because the media has pushed that blame on everyone and it's equally not right. Push the blame on the few in power of Media.

Ernelstein Goldberg the Third DO you even know what you are talking about here? We are talking about people that weren't allowed to study beyond grade 4; only some few people could even go to school; a black in a hospital was only to clean and not to be a doctor or nurse. My country has been independent for more than 40 years, minus 16 years of civil war. I'm part of the first generation that can say that I'm getting a degree on my parents account and hopefully the next generation will say that they can move out after 18. My dad got his degree a couple of years ago, because in the colonial era they couldn't study. You think that after the independence the doctors and teachers stood there and helped us in anyway. We are doing way better than the colonizers even thought we would. People had to be sent espresso in places like Cuba and Russia to get a degree fast and come back to be part of the medical and education system, because before we didnt have black doctors and teachers. Ana the criteria was, do you know how to read? go study. And yes, existed such sacrifices, some of the kids would work for other kids to study. we built a country from scratch between war and no professionals. Don't compare us to German, a place where all were allowed to study because they were no colonies, it's hypocrisy to do so.

I began to watch the documentary but few minutes later, I could not anymore. The title is about growing up in africa. I only know about it for my country because I don't live all over the continent. And I think by only showing negative things, it is like growing in that place is comparable to being in hell. It chocked me. But we know that people always say and show what they want so I just expect that next time it will be more in relation with your title. However, I respect your work.

Listened to Lamu issue, the translation is false. Lamu is an Islamic town heavily much into Al Shabaab ideology of their pure Islam interpretation. That is why they leave formal school for Maadarasa. Lamu is now being developed to be the main harbour for East Africa. So I would be believe the whole documentary is falsefied translation and interpretation of language and environment to fit your perception. That is why there is no African here speaking English so that your translation is taken as truth. It is half- truths heavily exaggerated.

Finished the entire documentary, this was fantastic as it covered so many different countries in Africa and demonstrated what is unique to some of these areas regarding those living in poverty and the effect it has on the children. I praise those who are doing something about the outcomes for these children. For once it is nice to see a documentary told from the point of view of those who are native, living and growing up in these countries on the continent of Africa. I am glad Apartheid ended! I am ashamed to say that in many states of the United States of America racism is alive and well and rears it's ugly head. I am considered to be Caucasian, but am also part Native American as well well as part English, Irish and Russian. I hate it that in 2023 the human race is still caught up in SKIN color. The Human Genome project settled it for all time that all of us are of ONE race--just different shades of brown, period. Some are darker than others, some are lighter than others due to the genetic drift and bottle necking of populations by where they live on the globe. WE are all related to each other!! To get this straight in our minds, Jesus Christ was born in the Middle East--probably dark skin--and Adam and Eve who were originally living probably in what is now AFRICA might also have been dark skinned. Abraham was no doubt of Arabic decent and dark skinned--living in the Middle East too. He traveled to a country in AFRICA, which is Egypt! HELLO--anyone get this? It was the tower of Babel that separated all the people to different parts of the globe that started changing the melatonin in our skin--which became part of the intricacies of DNA in different peopled groups. IT is physically possible for a married couple ANYWHERE in the world to have 12 or children and have them be different skin tones from "white to darkest black"--I witnessed that working in a pediatrics office. A "white" couple had twins, one was "white" one was "black" DNA proved both were related to each parent!! I saw the same thing happen with a "black couple." This is why I solemnly believe there are no black people or white people--just different shades of brown people. God wants us all to love each other, to get along with each other and accept each other. WE just have different Cultures. I loved this documentary, although I cried in places for the children. I loved how the documentary roved around different countries in AFRICA. YES, Africa itself is a beautiful place as a whole. Wonderful wildlife, beautiful scenery. NO doubt--but that was not the focus of this documentary. It was about children and their cultures and poverty and how each government of different countries and their communities are doing. For this, it is a wonderful documentary. Thanks! I am keeping it in my list of favorite documentaries to share with friends and family!!!!
