Thanks for this video ma'am. Quick question: did you transplant or plant seeds directly in the bags? Your immediate response will be highly appreciated.
This is awesome timing Thank You!!! My Autistic son became interested in our garden this year , I watched him shove watermelon seeds into pots of dirt thinking how precious he is, and just let him try. I was shocked yesterday to see watermelon plants coming up, my son is so excited! I'm going to sit with him and let him watch your earlier videos with me :) Cheers Lovely! Thanks for everything you have taught me :)
Hello Mandi - your story warms my heart! How fun it will be for him the watch the progress. Please do come back and tell me how things go with your garden. Thanks to your and your son for watching my videos!
oh my, i love that... my son has ADHD.. and well this past summer we harvested over 125 lbs of tomatoes needless to say he stuffed himself full!!! now he wont eat the ones from the store.. he he and well we now have tom tom cherry tomatoes in our little green house in my apartment.. he is anxiously waiting for them to ripen... got to love children and their desire to grow!
Both of your stories are so beautiful.... I wish y’all the best with your gardens ... I know that your gardening will be something they will never forget...as well as myself... cheers
Wow, I was afraid because I thought it was hard to grow, but now I see that it's easy. Thank you for your time, effort, and insight. I will follow these steps.
I have a little more space so I bought the 40 gallon black totes from Lowe’s. I drilled drainage holes in the bottom and put them on mulch on a bed liner in a little planter. The black containers really help keep the soil warm and the good drainage ensures you never get rot. I kind of want to try some of hose wrested pots you have though. Thanks for the video and tips. This will help my yield a lot!
there are also minimally vining varieties such as mini love and sugar pot. these have vine lengths of 12 to 24 inches long and produce up to 6 cantelope sized watermelons.
I am experimenting this year - I have the regular growbags, large 'dumpy' bags and some just planted outdoors - for next year I have also bought felt planters. I love melons, grow a number of varieties - this year a yellow coloured water melon. I use Velcro tape (Velcro band one wrap tape) on all of my climbers, can be broken off by hand and reused, it is also sold on Amazon.) For pollination I use cotton buds whenever necessary. Great video, thanks - from a wet and windy UK!
use jute for training the vines, that tape once used usually not used again and it doesnt decompose very well. use jute or metal, at least those will not end up floating in the ocean
I'm growing sugar baby watermelons this year in a container with a trellis on it. Im so excited and can't wait to see how it works! These tips will help a lot, thanks Kim!🌻
Pineapples I grow in containers too. I use sometimes bread ties to help my fruits vegetables to grow straight. I travel in a RV but always have fresh food all the time.
I never pollinate my watermelon and they grow like crazy. I grow mine in a regular tote bucket which drill holes in it. I’ve been successful at it now for 3 yrs.
Mine grew out of my compost suddenly and I'm trying to figure out what to do with it. I'm taking the tote route so far. I know it came from a large watermelon. Did yours end up on the ground after it started producing melons?
Otulissa3 yes, I produced six throughout the entire summer. I put small buckets under them while on the ground to help them to continue to grow. I also use trellises for the vines.
That's awesome!! If you have lots of bees around the garden, usually you don't have to worry about hand pollinating. I had to hand pollinate a few plants last year because I didn't have as many bees as I do this year😁 Thanks for sharing your experience with us🌸 Happy Planting!
I believe the reason they hand pollinate these is because when bees pollinate them they may cross pollinate different varieties. The seed of the fruit will yield hybrids in the next season. Hand pollinating ensures (for the most part) true to parent seeds.
Hi I love the vibrant colors in your garden. I just purchased 5 smart pots and planted peppers I live in zone 9 so I have warmer weather pretty much year round. Thanks for the inspiration and tips
Thanks for this video ma'am. Quick question: did you transplant or plant seeds directly in the bags? Your immediate response will be highly appreciated.
Hi Kim, since watching your video of growing large plants in pots, I have used the Smart Pots to grow my watermelons and they are growing like crazy!! thanks for sharing the tip about them.
Thanks for the video ..I learned a lot ...I’ve never grown watermelon in pots..simply did not know how ...I appreciate you showing us how to hand pollinate I will apply this principle to my yellow squash and my zucchini squash as well 🙏
Hola Kim :) Wow, can't wait to see these guys grow on that trellis! I mean they are looking great so far. Exciting :) no watermelons out here but the rest of my garden is doing great in their containers! Enjoy you Sunday you guys!!! :)
Thank you for this helpful video. This year, I'm growing watermelon for the first time and the instruction on training the vines upward and on hand pollinating are so useful.
I like your videos Kim, interesting and not dull to watch. This year I am actually growing a few different varieties of watermelon and cantaloupe/muskemelon, some on pots and some on the ground. I am doing a little experiment here in my garden every year. 😂 We've been organically gardening and raising quails and chicken for several years and even doing Aquaphonic gardening. I wanted to let you know that I used the Vermisttera Tea and castings on my plant this year, it was a great addition to my garden bedding and foliar fertilizer. I will post some pictures or videos on how my garden looks now, planted them right around end of April. They are just starting to have female flowers due to the weather just starting to really heat up. I live in the East Bay. Hope you continue to post some more watermelon and cantaloupe videos.
I use a 2 gallon watering can. I fill almost to top with filtered water. I add 1 tablespoon Epsom Salt, 2 tablespoons Miracle Grow for tomatoes, 1/4 cup alaska Fish fertilizer, 1/2 cup Kroger skim milk, (this covers the N-P-K and calcium, magnesium and sulfur needed by all veggies) then stir and mix well. I divide this 2 gallons among 2 watermelons and 2 cantelopes. Do the same recipe for my tomatoes, squash , and bell peppers. I am having my best results ever with this once every 7 to 10 day feedings. Big thick stalks, large green leaves, dozens of flowers and fruits everywhere. I do this extreme because all my plants are in containers. It's usually hot here so I water almost every day which leaches a lot out of the containers.
Great video!! I can't wait for my Sugar Baby Watermelon to start producing!! Love your videos Kim! Thank you so much for sharing!! 🌸 I just love your videos! I live in Central Florida Zone 9b and it can be pretty tough to grow here during the summer due to the excessive heat, humidity and rain we get between May and Sept. Even though it can be challenging, I still try to grow what I can in the summer.
Thank you for your video. This year I'm more committed to do gardening with smartpot theory. Too many gophers underground, so I'm literally taking it to another level
I like the small brush idea best. Not near enough bees around and that means less bee stings which is good, but less food production which is definitely not good.
hahah that hand pollination kills me! so cute! I'm so intimidated by fertilizing... I've heard horror stories where people burn their plants out... wish me luck!
Great idea with trellis Kim!! I'm growing Mighty Midgets, sugar baby, and tiger melons. i will definitely use the trellising idea! hope your having a great day!!!!
I've only had experience going tomatoes in pots but finally decided to grow golden wax beans as well this year. I started bell peppers and am planning on planting some of these compact watermelons with the golden flesh and this video was super helpful! Still a little intimidated but excited as well! New sub!
Hello, and thanks for the videos! I'm curious how many watermelon plants do you have per pot? I saw another video of yours and it mentioned a cantaloupe and a sugar baby, so I assume you could do 2-3 per 20 gallon pot? I'm also curious if there are difference between these "Smart pots" and other "grow bag" type items out there? Are there advantages to one over the other? It also looks like having more space for the tendrils to grab onto, will give more advantage to grow for these vines? Thank you.
Hi Kim...thank u so much for all of your great videos! I would like to know how to grow cantelope in a container?? I planted some seeds last summer and the plant grew like crazy but died before it ever produced any fruit! What did I do wrong and how can I get past this dying plant issue and actually grow some fruit?? Thank u!!
we usually grow tomatoes hydroponically, but let the kids start a variety of seeds in cocoa core which we will be transplanting to fabric pots. We live in central FL. How much space do i need to dedicate to trellising watermelon and squash? thanks
I like you! I am growing sugar baby watermelon in a container and thanks to your tips, I just may be successful! I think we're going to grow some great watermelon together. Thank you 💕💕🕊
I haven't had any luck maturing baby watermelons. I do live in Arizona can the heat be effecting them or maybe I need to pollinate them my self? Thank you so much for your videos they are very informative. I am in the process of growing snap peas, cucumber, tomatoes, and peppers so far I've harsent cucumbers and snap peas . My kids have been loving it .
Do you have any recommendations for specific soil? My parents got soil from a worm farm but it just isn’t measuring up to be that great of soil...I’ve been using Joe’s Organics fertilizer on it and it seemed to grow really well but the flower buds seem quite small.
I like the round tower welded wire trellis you grow the sugar baby watermelons on. I will not be planting in a container but can't use a cattle panel trellis. Do you think the round tower trellis will work okay in the garden? I would appreciate your advice!
Kim, I have heard from older farmers in my area that you should only feed watermelon prior to planting the seeds. They have told me that feeding them during their growing stage discourages the plants from setting fruit. Do you know if this is true, or is it just superstition? I am sure that container gardening brings a totally different paradigm for production. I have large watermelon in the ground here, and I am going on their beliefs, only because one of the farmers produces the biggest organic crop in Middle Tennessee. In my watermelon patch, I placed my best compost in the hills at 12 inches, 9 inches, 6 inches, and 3 inches deep with added worm castings, Epsom salt, unsulphured molasses, and other things I cannot recall. I have only watered these plants with rainwater since they have emerged. I am not an expert with melons, as this is only the 4th or 5th year we have grown them after we constructed a new section. If this video had come out 6 weeks ago, I would have definitely purchases the Sugar Baby seeds from MI. 99 cents is the best bargain outside of free exchanging. Plus, I like MI's videos as much as I like watching your videos. Both of your videos work for stress reduction like a couple glasses of wine, and your videos are 0 calories.
Hello, one of the great things about gardening is that there are many ways to accomplish the same goal. If it's working for the farmers in your area, then go for it! Experimenting in the garden is always fun! Containers, in my experience, are a whole different animal and need regular feeding to be productive. Glad you are enjoying my views and they are providing you with some relaxation and fun! Keep me posted on how your watermelons do this summer and thanks for watching!
Thank you for the beautifuI presentation. 2 days agoI pIanted 4 seeds of water meIon in a base.I am pIanning to transt pIant in a bigger pIastic bag.and put it just beside our front door. I wiII copy what you did.from PhiIippines.
i am currently growing watermelon in a pot . will it be ok if i placed all the watermelon vines all into the watermelon? will it affect the growth of my plant ? oh and i'm currently only getting male flowers will my plant produce female flower soon ? and thanks and nice video
Thank you for sharing your videos! I live in Central Texas and am growing Bonnie Plants Ice Box Watermelons(Heirloom Sugar Baby) and having a great time watching them becoming loaded with melons. I am puzzled on what size to pick them tho. Growing on a cattle panel support and I have supported them with strips of panty hose.
Can the liquid fertilizer be put into an Earthbox reservoir or does it need to go directly into the potting mix? Also, do you ever have a problem with squash bugs and if so how do you deal with it. Thanking you in advance for your videos and help to us all.
Question, these melons get to be over 6lbs each, how do you prevent that entire cage from toppling over? Just curious as Im interested in doing this myself and dont want it to fall over once they start to mature. thanks and great vid!
Hello Vincent - these are compact watermelon, and will probably be 3-5 pounds each. I do have an 8 foot pole supporting the cage, I can always put another if necessary. You can see more about the cage in the first video in the series, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xKKuI-RHcvk.html. Let me know if you have any other ideas too! Thanks for stopping by!
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY I’ve grown sugar babies as well and I can’t imagine them growing like this lol I am doing a container garden this year as oppose to my previous years and I’d ow to do this really
How perfect! I just bought some sugar baby seeds and been thinking about what size container I would need. How many plants do you think should be planted in the 20 gallon container?
@snobunni426 If you like cantaloupe and grow in containers, we did an Eden's Gem variety a couple of years ago in 5 gallon buckets, and they did pretty well. They are smaller melon, but pretty tasty. www.rareseeds.com/eden-s-gem-rocky-ford-melon/
Cantaloupe would work beautifully in containers, just make sure you have one large enough, 15-20 gallons. The Smart Pots have a ton of sizes to choose from, astore.amazon.com/cagaho-20?_encoding=UTF8&node=72. Keep me posted and thanks so much for watching!
Did you have an issue with the sugar baby having an excessive amount of seeds? I grew them last year and they did excellent, but when I cut them open there was more seeds than fruit. Not even kidding. Ended up just composting them, unfortunately... is it just the fruit, or something I did?
i am growing watermelons and cantaloups in pots. it good to know what happens with plant, root size, how many it need water. Russia, Saint-Petersburg (near Finland). Pots on street. Best wishes!
Hi nice video! I've been growing watermelon in a jiffy peat bag and they are a little over a week old. Could you tell me when I'll have to move them to a pot, please? Much appreciated.
Hi CaliKim .... can I substitute the worm tea with fish emulsion? What about side-dressing with bloodmeal (overkill?) I love the video where you find the "uge" watermelon in your patch, and even funnier when it doesn't turn out to be red .... going back to watch it again .... take care.
hello i see you have a stake in the pot ..what is it attached to ? and when it comes to the weaving the branches you put them in the closest slots according to length or as they grow you put them in each slot? can i use fish fertilizer? thanks in advance
I use old music tapes, about the same thing and are brown and can't be seen. I use containers because my new home has hard clay and I lost all my watermelon last year... I am growing all vining plants in one area and I allow them to crawl along the ground that has been covered with black floral cloth... I love your little wood "patio" I will do that, I have just the right place. Looks so lovely and neat. :) Thanks for your video...
I tried watermelon a few years back. There were lots of flowers and what looked like baby watermelon. Then all but 2 fell off. I didn’t hand pollinate them. Do you think they fell off because they were not hand pollinated?
Yes, they did not get pollinated either by the bees and/or by you! You are on track! Search my channel for videos: watermelon..there are a few in there that should be helpful ! (I hope!). Let me know Kimi!!! Kim
I've seen some other gardeners use 5, 10, 15 gallon containers for other large, viney produce...can anyone testify if any or all of those sizes are adequate enough for watermelon?🌱🍉
I have planted some water melon seeds just to see if they would grow. To my astonishment they are but autumn is here now will they die if I put them in my shed over winter as I know if they are outside they will definitely die with uk 🇬🇧 weather 🤔
So watermelon plants need at least 20 gal? I have 25gal pots, I was hoping would be enough. Also, if we have the space, is it ok to let them grow without trellises? (Its a rent house, so everything needs containers)
Great video, sweet! Question, Kim: What do you do when the melons get big and heavy to keep them from toppling over or stems breaking? Support them somehow? Such a pretty lady. Thanks for sharing:)
I love these videos!! Why do you use that plastic tape instead of something like hemp chord? Would some kind of string stick more to the plant? thanks!
Thank you for the video, I live in Texas and am growing container Congo watermelon , my soil is very hard and I water daily ... is it ok that my soil is very stiff and hard now. It did not start this way
Kim thanks for the great tips on growing vegetable Vining plants I was wondering about something that you did not mention in your video or at least I don't think you did anyway when feeding your vegetable Vining plants when is the best time to feed them do you feed them before the blooms come on or do you feed them after the blooms come on I heard that somewhere and I was just wondering if that was true or not
Hi Dorian - Yes, you sure can! Just make sure you chose a container large enough, more about that in the first video in this series, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xKKuI-RHcvk.html. Let me know how it goes for you!
i have been using the same kind of pots you use. i see this year on the outside of the bottom of the pot has algea or green stuff on the outide of pot. is that bad. or can i still use it
So glad you did this video. I'm also growing sugar baby in container. how big of a trellis should I install? more importantly how high? Thankyou, God bless!
Glad you are growing melons in containers as well - great way to save space! This trellis is my DIY tomato cage, check out the video for all the details, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VA06sXIJgrs.html. Happy gardening!
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY I have not seen an update for your sugar baby progress. I'm really curious how it looks growing up the trellis you made because they are so viney. please show us as soon as you can...God bless!
