Meredith Thomas started growing organic food for her family’s health. When she was diagnosed with autoimmune disorders, she expanded her vision to embrace holistic wellness with both cultivated and wild plants that offer medicinal benefits. On a small neighborhood lot, she companions vegetables, citrus, and fruiting trees with beneficial papalo, moringa, sunchoke, and lambsquarters (Chenopodium giganteum ‘Magenta Spreen). Along with eating fresh, she ferments, concocts tinctures and bitters, and even makes natural cleaning products with plants from her garden. Music by Freejay MacLoud.

I think I've seen her in an older episode. I love getting multiple uses from plants in my garden, too.

This is after my own heart. 45, autoimmune, and starting in plant medicine. I'm also on a 15 acres Central Texas property. More space and time than energy and knowledge (I do have some of both). Not sure where to start...

So inspiring and informative. I also like what she did with her front yard... "I wanted my children to see green when they looked out the window, not the street". Front yards are often wasted gardening space so it's nice to see someone think outside of the box and do something different.

This is similar to Chinese herbal medicines, in fact a lot of our modern common western medicine comes from plants. Her garden is so lovely and calming. Awesome video as always ❣️

When you started your backyard gardening area, did you cut or till up the area first, or just lay the cardboard and pea gravel on top of the existing lawn area?

I'm sorry for the late reply! I couldn't resist planting the Hoja Santa-I loved the look of its leaves and its vigorous growing pattern...and it has a beautiful aroma...that's why it is used to flavor stews and also you can wrap food like fish, tamales etc with the leaves. You can also dry the leaves and make an herbal tea for cold symptoms and supposedly even rheumatism. I confess I surprisingly have not dried the leaves, but used them in cooking. Happy gardening!

@@merediththomas9426 ...Question: so, I'm in zone 10-b / coastal San Diego, CA. I'm assuming Hoya santa will be perennial, if not evergreen, here? I REALLY love the look and knowing its medicinal now, more inspired to buy some starters. Thanks!

For sure-I always ask people to do their own research and feel into their own healing journey. Take care Adrian and thank you for writing.
