If you're confused about the General's plan, he wasn't really going to flood the ENTIRE colony. He was just going to drown the workers, because he views them as weak when compared to his soldiers. He planned to start a new colony from his select few soldiers. That's what he meant when he said he wanted a "pure colony".
I love this movie so much! I saw it yearsss before A Bug's Life, so of course Antz is my preference. And I love the more adult tone. It made me feel more grown as a kid. 😂 Plus the social commentary is always relevant!
Here's the full history: All of Disney's "weird" movies came from the Florida studio, which for a long time was a backup animation studio that did work the main Burbank studio didn't have time for. Then in 1996 Disney decided to focus all their energy on transitioning to 3D animation. They acquired Pixar and started working on A Bug's Life. They basically told the Florida studio (their only remaining full-time 2D animation studio) - "Eeeeeeh, do what you want." And the Florida studio, for the first time, got to produce feature films: Mulan (1998) Tarzan (1999) John Henry (2000) The Emperor's New Groove (2000) Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) Lilo & Stitch (2002) Brother Bear (2003) Then in 2004 Disney decided to stop producing 2-D feature films altogether. They closed down the Florida studio and laid off all the Florida Studio animators. Many of whom then got hired by Dreamworks.
@@TheReZisTLust John Henry was a short. I remember it was tacked onto a VHS I used to have with all the "American Legends" package characters like Johnny Appleseed and Casey Jones. I think all of the above are up on Disney+ now.
The biggest problem I have with this movie is the existence of male worker and soldier ants. Male ants are exclusively for reproduction, they do their thing and cease to exist. Every single other ant is female. I'd just like to see a more realistic anthropomorphized ant colony movie. Also, have it all in subtitles since they communicate through pheromones.
You can not make a movie like this 100% true to reality, for example, ants do not make plans to drown their colony and make a pure colony. Better watch a documentary
Lol I’d watch that. It would also be cool to do like, artistic interpretations with the pheromones too haha although that would be going kind of far. But having it be mainly female would be really fun! And I always love it when movies do their research on the animals they’re portraying! A bad example; in Rio, Blu would’ve been dead in the first 15 minutes because he ate a CHOCOLATE chip cookie and drank hot CHOCOLATE! Like, come on. Meanwhile, in Lion King, they have the structure of lion’s prides pretty well done. Just do more research on your animals, and you can find a ton of fun facts and symbolism.
False on the male ants only for breeding if their were only female ants in the colony there would be infighting since all female ants have the potential to become a queen and there is only allowed to be one queen for colony if the is another queen that second queen would be killed and all her eggs would be infertile and used for food or tossed outside for waste. Despite your possible hate for men and only see them for breed, ants use everything at their disposal regardless of gender everyone has a part to play and if you can't keep up then you can't help the colony and are useless
at 6:18 the question of "how long do ants live" got me curious, so i looked it up, if these are Fire Ants which i would guess they are since red, turns out the size of the worker matters alot. small ones like Woody Allen only live 1-2 months, but the medium Old guy that tells bout insectopia can live 2-3 months. Meanwhile the big ones can live 3-6 months, so Stallone's ant will pry live 3 times longer than Woody's. Crazy
After growing up watch both Antz and A bugs life, I have never before thought that they had similar plots??? I feel like in my mind they never needed to be compared to one another. Edit: I haven’t watched this movie in so long, probably because it’s so damn dark 😱😅
It's not that they are similar it's that they were released at the same time so Pixar said they stole the idea and Dream Works claimed it as their own cus it was the guy who left Pixar ideas
Fun fact about ants ants can hold their breath by taking air bubbles from water. You see water has to have air floating into it even if it's underground. So ants linked together mouth to mouth to share oxygen until they get air bubbles. Unless they have enough air bubbles for the entire colony they link together into a massive ball to float onto the Rushing water. Underground then the workers begin to get to work ceiling and plugging the hole. Some Aunt colonies have a special division of ants that specifically plug in Holes in underground water. Then interesting enough they ration that water out into other sections of the colonies to create mold that they eat. So no ants are not going to die from rushing underground water
I didn't hate this movie as a kid but the ant bully and a bugs life were definitely more appealing. Especially because this movies art style wasn't my favorite.
Less than a minute into the video, and I just really wanna thank you for being respectful of people who do like bugs or keep them as pets, even though you are not a big fan of bugs, yourself. I don't have any pet invertebrates, but I am a biologist who has worked with plenty of "creepy crawlies." So many really amazing animals that people either dismiss or fear or resent. I totally understand people with phobias (I've spent years working to manage a panic-attack-inducing phobia of wasps, myself) or even people without phobias who just don't particularly like bugs. So often, though, there are people who take things too far, saying the most heinous things to other people about the animals in their care. It's really disheartening. I have so much respect for you and other people who, despite their own personal dislike of bugs (or any creature), are still respectful of people who study them or keep them as pets or are otherwise personally/emotionally invested in them. Thank you for showing such compassion.
seeing the headless ant as a child traumatized me 🤣😭 i refused to watch this movie again until i was an adult, & was still freaked out lmao the whole vibe of this movie is so confusing.. swearing, kidnapping, hyper-sexualized, war, politics, yet a children's movie hahaha would rather watch a bug's life 100% of the time.
5:53 Yeah...this was back when PG used to stand for what it actually meant. Which was "Parental Guidance." Nowadays, it more stands for "Practically G."
So you don't feel alone in the trauma bonding, I once had a nightmare with two pray mantis the size of dogs hunting me down, it wasn't as simple as ''big pray mantis'', their apearance and details were much worse, but I won't share to avoid giving you that image ;)
@@killinglonliness88 Thank you 😁 In my case, I speak three languages so sometimes my keyboard goes crazy trying to guess which one I'm writing with and I end up having typos or an autocorrect that changes something without me noticing 😅
I really liked Antz's plot; generic as it is, cross-class romance leading to a breakdown in class boundaries is fun. I just can't watch Woody Allen anymore. The side characters in this movie are great, I like Barbados, Z's friends Azteka and Weaver, Cutter is interesting, I liked the Yellow jackets. But Z makes me cringe so much now. I feel you on the insect trauma -- I saw a lot of crushed caterpillars as a kid and now injured bugs freak me out. It's cool that you watched these movies knowing they might set you off. You do good stuff.
You’re definitely right, this is a pretty forgettable/skipable movie. I never remember the plot just a couple small scenes like the ant ball. It’s not bad but it’s not nearly as good as bugs life, can’t wait for that one!
The only reason I’ve ever watched this movies is because my civics teacher made us watch it and relate the story to different aspects of government and political beliefs we learned about in the class. My main thought was how weird it was that a children’s movie about ants had a scene where the body of Z’s friend was ogled by the camera while he was digging.
Watching this reaction reminded me that Woody Allen voices the main character and Kevin Spacey voices the main villain in Bugs Life lol. Makes both movies a lot harder to rewatch.
One of my grandmothers gave me a VHS of this movie, I like this movie so much, is dark enough, it doesn't shy away about showing things as they are, in contrast I dont remember character dying in Pixar movies, at least not character that had characterization, directly in the movie, for a child that his first memory is from the death of his grandpa, I have never feel death as a foreign concept.
I love how many people, me included, have had this misconcept of Dreamworks. Most of their work is not really children-aimed, but still we kids watched their content haha
The wasps were W.A.S.Ps, get it? White Anglo-Saxon Protestants. Famous for being snooty New England types that "Had social obligations to the poor" like her hobby. I've always thought the "White, Anglo-Saxon" thing was redundant but whatever.
9:08 - 9:25 This movie is basically a PG version of Starship Troopers (Which you should check out, by the way. Probably the most underrated satire film in cinema.), when you think about it….
Your reactions are always great lmao I think it's also good because the editing. Adds so much more to it. Now that I think about it, i've been watching for over a year now. Damn time flies ;-; lmao
Love your reactions and personality- you are so fun to watch! Are you planning on reacting to Encanto ( the new disney movie that just came out of disney+) thank you so much for your hard work and effort you put into this channel?
@@SophiaPhannn not really related to this video but did you know there’s a sequel to atlantis the lost kingdom? It’s not rly as good as the original but that’s a high bar, it’s still a movie i rly enjoy
Growing up, my family had the DVD of Antz and my siblings and I would watch all the time! 😆😆 I'd say it's been like 10 years since I last watched it and seeing this brings back so many fond memories. I remember all these scenes so vividly!! 😭😭
You chose the perfect scene for the thumbnail. To be honest, I can't believe this movie was made for kids. Literally wtf Dreamworks? XD Happy New Year, Sophie! Plot-wise and overall animation, Bug's Life is much better, and a movie I'll let my child(ren) watch! XD
I LOVE this movie!!! Definitely one of my favorite movies growing up. And to me, it still holds up today. This movie is an underrated classic. Also: Happy New Year! Loving the length of your hair 😍
I still think that, in my opinion, while it was a bit decent, Antz was very weird and inappropriate for a PG rated CGI animated film made in 1998, and it is especially one weird way to start DreamWorks Animation.
A little truama sharing from me :D I have a very big phobia of frogs and toads for multiple reasons. 1) When i was in kindergarden, during a field trip when we were heading back on the bus to go back to school. One of my class mates called my name to get my attention and when i turned around they threw a BIG ASS TOAD ON ME. That shit truamatized me for the rest of my life. 2)And its also because they're so slimy and move so fucking fast and jump so high and the way their throat just moves 😰😰😰 Thank you for listening to my truamatic experience :D
I love bugs, I grew up watching bugs life and miss spider's sunny patch friends and somehow I never wanted to watch Antz. Growing up with bug shows allowed me to have respect for them.
I can't wait for your take on A Bug's Life! As far as I'm concerned, everything about it -- story, animation, characterization -- is a whole lot stronger. Definitely on par with the rest of early Pixar movies. I hope you enjoy it!
It’s literally Seven Samurai, lol. I still like it, but to call it better when the entire plot was pretty much picked up from another movie…Idk. To each their own, I guess.
I watched this movie as a kid (as well as A Bugs Life), and I prefer A Bugs Life waaay more. I do remember the parts where bugs are killed (decapitated head ant really stuck out in my mind), but other then that, and the song "I can see clearly now the rain has gone", I didn't remember much else.
I understand Also screw people who kill buggs for no reason, especially turturing em. They are why we live today. Respect the bug life and leave em alone. (I understand for people who's actually afraid of bugs and have to kill em) but people who kill em for fun is effed up
😅 NGL the Ants marching unlocked a core memory of me sobbing as I sang along cause I KNEW they were gonna die AN THEN WE SEE HIM TALKING AS JUST A HEAD 😭😭😭 I was not ready an never will be ready. I love this movie but that part makes my heart hurt and eyes sweat
Omg 😂😂😂 I never knew as a kid those 3 bugs at campfire were stoners but instead just thought "Ahhh yes, they're like Shaggy and Scooby" 😅 so I guess in a way was right?
its funny how the part i remember the clearest is when the soldier ants go to war against the termites (btw i was super little when i first watched this) also off topic i just loved the prince of eqypt trailer in this movie so much it looked so cool especially the plagues part with the fire falling from the sky!!!
Ahhhh hi bestie! Love, love, looovvveeee this movie so much. Bugs? I 100% agree, bleh 🤢 this is just so iconic and a hugeeee part of my childhood. Me and the main ant in this have the same abandonment issues so it makes it all the more iconic for me. Anyways love youuu and your channel :)
My sister and I saw this movie on VHS and we were shocked that there was some swearing throughout this film, and its supposed to be a kids movie! Lol! I guess not all animated movies are aimed at children.
So basically this movie was rushed together by Jeffrey Katzenberg using the idea of a movie about ants because he knew the plan from John La**eter, Pete, Brad, and Steve Jobs during that *legendary* "special cafe lunch". Katzenberg wanted Disney to fail on their big purchase on PIXAR. So, he bought a loaded cast, filled the movie with a dark tone and adult jokes that Disney would never allow, and rushed to release it before Bugs Life. The animation was not that bad considering the 3D at the time. Like the toys from Toy Story, ants have a hard exterior skeleton and segmented limbs, that made it easier for Antz to catch up to A Bug's Life in production. It also pitted Burger King and McDonalds against each other with competing kid's meal/happy meal toys.
Great reaction! Sophia how would you feel if you were the giant shoe stomper who stepped on Z and Bala at 17:40. If there was a Antz reboot and you were able to be the giant shoe stomper how would you do it?
Antz was a very petty dig at Disney’s Lessenter and Eisner by Katzenberg (then DreamWorks CEO) because he didn’t get to be the CEO of Disney. He had blatantly ripped off Lassenters idea’s about the movie when he as a friend tried to spar with Katzenberg on A Bug’s Life. Katzenberg also tried his darnest to get Antz out before A Bugs Alice did. So yeah it was just him being petty
I never thought this movie was a kid's movie. Perhaps I had better parents that knew better, but I always thought it was marketed as a movie for adults - which is why they had the star power.
I always love when people comment on the PG rating for this movie 😂. Technically it does stand for « Parental Guidance ». But as a kid back then you barely recognize those words or what’s going on. From my experience, anyway. Your reaction was awesome!🖤😊
1:40 Jeffrey Katzenberg worked for Disney for a long time, started developing Dreamworks on the side and splintered off, and a long, long trend with Dreamworks has been to liberally lift from Disney, given the former Disney executive producer's modus operandi back then. Antz is the most blatant of this, having gotten developed when this was originally going down.
2:30 They're both Dreamworks, so I'm not going to cry "foul" on this one so much, especially given the very different directions they go in. We'll see what happens if there's ever a hornet or termite movie.
I remember seeing this movie in theaters with my parents. I would have been like 4 and my parents believed that any animated movie was a children's movie. I don't remember the plot of this movie at all
Don't worry in California cousin vs cousin relationships are permitted by law ....its still looked down upon for obvious reasons but is still legally permitted 14:15
This movie is SO under-rated. But not as many people are going to like it because its not what they want. People rather watch a Disney movie, this is more like a Snydern kids movie which is MY jam.
