From the Wikipedia entry on root beer: "Root beer is a sweet North American soft drink traditionally made using the root bark of the sassafras tree Sassafras albidum or the vine of Smilax ornata (known as sarsaparilla; also used to make a soft drink called sarsaparilla) as the primary flavor."

As a long time Martial Artist I can attest the human foot can do a lot of damage when bear. More in shoes and actually less in trainers. I have broken and had broken various bones from kicks and its the bones in the foot that do the damage not the muscles or skin. Conditioning just allows you to ignore the pain from kicking and have the confidence to apply more power. After the feet elbows then fists can also do more damage than people think if you hit the right/wrong spot.

Hi Tim and Steve. Regarding the food courts and the use of hot water at dish/utensil stations. From what I have seen, the utensils made available to customers at the dish/utensil stations appear to already be cleaned. The hot water is available to any customer who wants an added level of safety by immersing their utensils. If a utensil is first cleaned properly, it is then only needed to be sanitized...not "sterilized". Sanitization happens when a utensil is placed in a pot of water for about 30 seconds at a temp of only about 170F (77C). From what I have seen (I didn't measure :-) the water looked hot enough to be at least the temperature noted above. BTW, the words "sterilize" and "sanitize" are often misused. Sterilization occurs at 250F (121C) or higher so that even spores are destroyed. That level of destruction is not needed (and would be cost-prohibitive) at a typical food establishment since we humans can consume spores without any pathogenic problems. It's only the vegetative pathogens that get us sick. Plus, IF the establishment is doing all the other washing steps they are supposed to be doing in the dish/utensil cleaning process (I know, it's Thailand) then the vast majority of the microorganisms are removed simply by friction and water.

Steve got it wrong segment. Motorbike Mirrors - I ride motorbikes in Thailand to get through the traffic. The Thais remove them to make their bikes narrower to get through the cars. Tim you’re right … it doesn’t make the bike narrower because they don’t protrude past the ends of the handlebars but the missing part of your equation is Car external rear vision mirrors which miraculously are usually the same height of a motorbikes mirrors. Therefore motorbikes mirrors hitting car mirrors is the issue. When I see a Thai on a motorbike going like the clappers, invariably they have no mirrors. Not emphatic. Love the show.

Great show guys, you had me laughing! . . . I lived in Chengdu, Sichuan, China (where the giant pandas breed) and I would often "wash off" all the Chilli/Sichuan peppers from my food, in the green tea. Something, I'd forgotten about. Some traditions in China are very foreign, like spitting in the street (usually men over 50) and spitting food on the floor or table - depending on the quality of the restaurant. China is an amazing country and overall my 6 years was a fabulous experience. Their people, individually are special.

You certainly inherited something from your parents. I'm guessing your mother because you don't mention your father as much. Regardless, I admire someone who doesn't just talk about an idea but actually makes it happen. Not me, unfortunately I just do the talking part 😊 By the way, my favourite moment when following you on the Thaiger was when you were doing an outside broadcast in Phuket during the pandemic, and a woman riding past on the back of a motorcycle shouted out "Thaiger is the best" or something very similar. I think George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F is a much more substantial piece, but Rhapsody in Blue was more influential on popular music. I don’t think it moved the dial for Classical music as much as say, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring or Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra or many of the symphonies of Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Sibelius and Vaughan Williams. Your mileage may vary. Should we pronounce cities the way locals do? I doubt it - I am from Glasgow in Scotland - we pronounce it Glezgah with the stress on the 1st syllable.
@timnewtontoday

Regarding the sanitizing of cutlery, I believe very hot water for a few seconds would work. Being a dishwasher technician at the local Chinese food restaurant in high school I had to test the dishwaher once a week to make sure it was running hot enough. And it didn't run that long. A brief search says the surface temp of items need to be.. "160°F (71°C) and holding it at-or above-160°F (71°C), for at least a few seconds" I don't think I would operate on myself with those utensils, but eating Chinese food should be just fine! 😂

I used to drink hot sarsaparilla and eat a bowl of jellied eels in South London's East Lane market many moons ago. They banned sarsaparilla due to the root causing liver cancer apparently. It's a different recipe now. I travelled by bus from Adelaide across the Nullarbor Plain back in the late 90s to watch the Wright Whales doing their migration. Never saw one. My tongue was as dry as a camel driver's saddle blanket, during the fourteen hour bus trip as I couldn't buy a beer. We were in an alcohol banned area for Aborigines. Promised one for when we arrived at the 'Motel'. It was shut! Back in 1997, my thirty year old son was banned from the Captains Bar in the Oriental as he was wearing shorts. We all packed up and left. Rhapsody In Blue. I used to play the four opening notes on our war damaged piano after watching the film when it first came out in England. A great film. I must confess to this being the first time I've watch Grumpy Old men right through and I enjoyed it. At 90 I'm grumpy enough. But not all the time.😉

The motorcycle groups are called "dek waen" not "dek win". With them, removing the mirrors is probably mostly fashion, but many of them race as well. Removing the mirrors does indeed cut wind resistance. They remove parts of the fairing for the same reason. And wind resistance is also the reason some racers ride in the Superman style. They can put big money on the races, so they'll do whatever they can to give themselves an edge.

My wife allowed her useless nephew to use her Honda Wave. The first thing he did was to take the mirrors off, then the chain guard. Then he bought a straight through muffler. It was loud so my wife made him put the original muffler back on. Then he took the front brake caliper off. I have no idea why he did that. That's when she gave the Honda to her sister to use. It was not safe to ride without the front brake. That little Honda was nearly destroyed during the time her nephew was using it. I haven't seen it since her sister took it.
@Eoghan-hs2wz
@Eoghan-hs2wz Месяц назад
@@garyaltenburger6667 That sounds about right. The more you remove from original stock, the cooler you are. It's all about fitting in. The "dek waen" adopt similar clothing and haircuts. The girls that ride on the back of the bikes are called "sa-goy" (สก๊อย). Most of them have a scar on the inside of their right calf. This comes from getting their leg burnt on the exhaust pipe. Many girls from upcountry have the scars as well, as motorcycles are the main source of transportation in some areas.

Steve Got It Right! When you start counting, you say, "One, Two, Three", you don't say, "zero, one, two..." So 2,000 was the last year of the 20th Century, and 2001 was the first year of 21st century. I had to argue this quite often in 1999. Why are you not going to ask Steve's Mother if she would like to talk to you on a Grumpy Old Men video, when she is there, for many reasons. First and foremost, anyone who brought Steve Rosse (with an E) into this world in the first place is obviously a person of interest. Secondly someone of her age is going to be interesting to talk to. I tried to talk my mother into travelling to Thailand again in her mid-80's, but she had no desire to endure the 12 hour flight. However if you do this, you would have to ban Steve from being in the same room! I don't think you would get the scoop if Steve was there, just a hunch! Keep up the good work Tim, I don't extend this sentiment to Steve as he is going to take a hiatus when his mother is there. I can understand his rationale, but question his stamina! I'm sure his mother would not object to Steve doing Grumpy Old Men when she is there. Topic for conversation: What's a Monger? Is it a bad thing? I am not a monger, I'm married, I will be retiring to Thailand and one of my hobbies is birdwatching, does that make me a "Bird-monger"? Is that a thing? Feel free to discuss... TTFN

Per Google, Historically, root beer was created using the root of the sassafras tree while sarsaparilla used the sarsaparilla vine as it’s main ingredient.

In reply to motorcycle/scooters removing there side mirrors. I really didn't know this was a thing. But the only thing I can think of, would be to make them easier to park, in those large parking areas in Thailand where there are thousands of bikes squeezed into a small location
