I dragged my 5 and 7 year old kids from Melbourne to Metuchen New Jersey in 1978 and back to Melbourne 5 years later. Both kids treasure memories and friends from NJ and later back in Melbourne. Not same as your experience Steve but I think worth mentioning. I had Dengue in Singapore 20 years ago and Steve’s symptoms are the same as I had. Nasty experience!

We travelled a lot with our kids, for years at family dinners as adults they would tell us all the things they resent about their upbringing, now that their kids are adults they have to sit through their children telling them the things they resent including lack of travel and tell their parents what a great upbringing they had. In summary as a parent you can’t win.

My husband was employed by a Bangkok company. We moved there with two children, 13 years and 11 years. Initially my 13 yr old daughter was a bit resentful but now at 37 years old she is back living in Thailand. The move was the best thing for them. My son ended up living in Bangkok for 15 years and only recently moved back to Australia . Overseas travel broadens the mind, no doubt.

I disagree with you, as I know a few families that have taken there children with them all over the world. Most of the negative issues with children growing up, comes down to the parenting. Not because of location.
@mannyjackson1048

Agreed 100 percent. It is the upbringing. I know quite a few kids growing up whose dad's were military and lived in many countries throughout the World and are way kool with their experiences and stories. It doesn't matter though cause their's always a few bad apple's on the tree in every country.

What Steve was talking about is the vital social skills to make friends etc.. you can pretend the kids are alright and worldly all you want but they might live a life of loneliness because it was never worth making real friends on the road..

Steve. that may have been the expat situation back in the 1960's when you were a kid but as an expat kid in the 80's it was the best upbringing ever. I came back to the UK with a completely different perspective on the world and as an adult can easily slot into any culture in hours where many of my English peers cannot.

As you so correctly stated, children need routine and stability as they are growing up! 👍. Glad you are feeling a bit better. Tim, video quality and sound excellent today 😃. Don't know what the new technology was you were using but it was obviously working well 😅.

Half agree, half disagree on families overseas. My kids were born in Thailand, and also lived in Hong Kong and Singapore. Yes, I was on a full expat package with paid American schools and flights home so they weren't only restricted to a foreign culture. But their time abroad gave them a perspective that they could never gain by being only in US, and they still maintain communication with old school friends. But when they reached 8 - 10 years old, they were moved to the US for a more normal life, to build long term friendships and spend time with grandparents...this was planned / deliberate. And after a few years, I returned overseas on a single status basis, leaving wife and kids behind...a compromise, but it worked.

Completely agree with Steve! As a retired teacher, I can state every time a child moves they lose approximately 6 months of education. Kids need a stable environment. Playing outside, sports, neighbors & classmates are vital To a healthy childhood! Home schooling for the most part has created very sheltered & anti-social individuals. Social media & video games have had a great detriment on society.

2 points. TCK, third culture kids. Having been an int'l school teacher for most of my career, I have known many tck's. Watching a blond 5 year old Dutch girl romping abound with native children in Maun, fluent in Tswana, Dutch, English and 2 other languages, it can work. Its not so much the location (though I think 2 years is better than a 1 year stay) but the it is the family that is the determinant. Thank goodness for 7-11. When the lockdown hit Pattaya. 7-11 was one of the few places open. Everything else was closed. The selection may not have been great, and there were some supply issues, but I was able to get essentials throughout the lockdown. (and restaurant delivery services, Love you Food Panda, tip your delivery person)

I agree with Steve. These so called parents won't accept any restrictions on their life-style - and certainly not parenthood. They will argue they are including parents, who are engaging in their children, yadi-yada, and all the rest of it. But it's the kids who are forced into activities and contexts where they have no reason or desire to be, and are not particularly welcome.
