There's none better, and their adjustables are in a league all their own. Among all the razors I look after, my vintage Gillettes are still my favorites. They not only look the coolest, they still give me the best shaves.
The GSC red tip is a few shades too bright imo. I also don't care for a long handle. Combined, both features lend itself to a toylike appearance when compared to the original, whereas the Gillette is stout and dapper with the shorter handle and darker red tone. GSC did nail the finish, however, a tribute or replica should be as close to original as possible (Fat Guy) because Gillette got it right the first time.
Great video, Ken. Thanks for posting. I've got a bag of the old type 50p pieces. You can have a couple free of charge to say thanks for posting all your videos. Just let me know where I can send them. The years they were minted are as follows: 1969, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982. You can have whatever you want. Cheers, Rob.
Ken....Have a collection of razors and been shaving for over 50 years.... For me, without question, the Gillette Red Tip is the best and my favorite razor... Have a pretty heavy beard and when you pair the red tip up with a real good, smooth blade, (Gillette Wilkinson, Derby, BIC, Super Blue etc.) not necessarily the sharpest but smooth, it is a dream... If I had to do it all over again I would go right to Razor Emporium and buy a refinished Red Tip first thing! Love watching your video's...!
I bought the GSC Red Tip and found it to be a very good shaver. Finish was meh. Didn’t care for the bead blasted doors and the red tip coating had a bare spot. Blade reveal was perfect, but the doors didn’t perfectly align. At $19.99 it would have been a good deal. I ordered a made to order original red tip in nickel from Razor Emporium. Can’t wait! Thanks for the videos maestro!
Nice shave Ken. Very thorough review. Rain up here in the Bay Area stopped yesterday. Still some rain up north, though. You did scare me for a second: At the beginning of the video I thought you were going to bust out a slide rule.
@@kensurfs North of us, too. The part of CA that gets the most rain is closer to the Oregon border. We'll be lucky to get 75% of normal rainfall this year. But that's only if we have a "Miracle March."
Great shave. I’m interested in the Red Tip razor, not the tribute but the authentic vintage one. I’d rather spend my cold hard cash on a vintage Red Tip instead of a replica just for the sake of authenticity and nostalgia
Ken💈💈nice shave. A "tribureplidupe"(new word) razor, lol. Not surprised being from GSC. No issue shave, can't beat it. I think it was attained by using the Wilky blade... That streak on your face during 1st pass was a chunk of soap that didn't get mixed in the lather, was left from the brush and picked up by the razor. No worries. Great video and comparison. Stay safe. Enjoy!
Very nice comparison Ken and you did not cut yourself bravo sir. Sorry to hear about your 50 pence I do hope you find it. Take care my friend always look forward to seeing more of your videos :)
Always love to see a shave comparison! We just had 12-18 inches of snow here (I measured 14 inches) in NJ. I feel like this was calling one captains choice Nor'easter.
we had a cabinet full of old Gillette's in those plastic cases when I was growing up and for years later. I have no idea what happened to them. Things that make you go...DAMN...!!!
Hi! I have just started using de blades and wet shaving. Your videos are always interesting and informative. I've heard that Feana soaps are quite good but I have not tried one yet. I got surprised that a greek soap found the way to your den and I can't wait for the review (pardon my english but I'm like the soap... Greek).
Hi Ken- Great shave and comparison video; thank you! Have a great rest of the week. Take good good care and be safe and be well. Best regards, as always, Ken!
Great video, I wish I would have a vintage one. Started with all this stuff like a year ago while I stumbled upon your videos and oh boy nothing beats this shaving (was using this plastic garbage before). First one I tried to get a feeling for it was a plastik Wilkinson one and like 1 week later I bought my first Merkur, which is easier to buy for me since I am from Germany and I am still using this Merkur a year later. The plastic ones would be broken by now lol. Whatever, just wanted to say, great job on your videos and bringing me into a great way of shaving, my skin thanks you :-D
Very nice shave Ken. I just want to say that the Gillette Redtip is not aggressive to me. The Fatboy and Slim are more efficient and I reach for them more frequently. Have a nice day!
Hey Ken, great comparison video! Would love to see your brother get that Charger! It will keep my mind off all this snow we are getting in NY! BTW congrats on the 24k subscribers! Thanks and Best Wishes!
I thought the same. I'm not fond of this companies so called "tributes". A tribute should at the very least resemble the original, this isn't even close.
I agree on nickel plating vs chrome. A nickel plated brass razor can be readily replated, but chrome is an absolute bear to replate. It has to be stripped bare first. Chrome is brittle and failure prone. Nickel is not brittle. AFAIK, Gillette never made a vintage chrome plated razor. There were a few that were rhodium plated, the President and the British Aristocrat were rhodium plated. Rhodium has a very hard smooth, brilliant mirror like finish, easy to clean, but it is relatively expensive, and not as easy to replate as nickel. Nickel on brass is a lifetime finish. Chrome is not. Rhodium is bling. Gold is nice, but wears faster than nickel. The vintage Gillette flare tip razors had blue or red paint powder coated on top of nickel plate on the tip. Powder coating is much more durable than ordinary paint. I wonder which was used on the GSC razor.
If you never saw the original from '59 then the tribute is a fine razor but at the end of the day the original wins hands down in my personal opinion. Nice soap coin too ;-)
Hi Ken, great comparison shave. Like you I prefer a milder razor so can't imagine wanting a red tip original or clone to be honest. I did buy the fatguy which is a pretty good replica of the fat boy and at least you're able to dial in the shave. Enjoy your working schedule and catch you on the next one. Blessings to you and your family.
New red tip should perhaps be a shade, or two, darker towards the original. Would lend itself more towards business and steer away from a 'toy-like' appearance. Anyway, it will eventually find it's way into my vintage Gillette collection.
I definitely won’t be buying one. I bought the gold fat guy, but I won’t be buying anymore butterfly(twist to open) razors from global shave. My repli speed, one of the doors came off, the screw on it came off. Now I’m scared to use the fat guy. I’ll be buying two more jfk replitechs though. I’ve only had issues with their butterfly razors.
When that razor first came out, it did have a quality issue because of the calibration of a machine. While we thought that we disposed of them, but a few did get through. Your new Repli Speed is on its way. Enjoy!
Companies obviously decided to target youtubers to act as publishers. They just send all of them free products to make us all buy that, because "If they all use it it is probably good".
Hi Ken =) nice comparison once again... had fun watching it! By the way "time for another giveaway"!!! 24000 subscribers!! Is it this time it will come to Portugal? =) Hope so!!!!
Hey, Ken, recent sub here, so sorry if this has been addressed already, but - if it's not too personal - how about a tattoo video? I know there is usually a story/meaning behind most tattoos... Love the channel!
@@kensurfs awesome! I have a Chinese style dragon too. It's on my right inner forearm, so I heard all the 70s "Kung Fu" tv show remarks... I got it when I was 18 & had joined the Air Force. Funny thing is, I have been doing martial arts since I was about 15 years old(53 and broken now lol), so there really WAS a 'kung fu connection'. Hahaha I am going to get a tattoo on my left inner forearm called "the 5 sacred lines", alot of Muay Thai fighters have them. I'm too old & broken (back surgeries) to fight anymore but the spirit will always be in me!
Yes, I’ve used the Gillette 7oclock sharp edge(yellow packet) and the ones in the green packet, I find the both of them fantastic and similar but I prefer the yellow over the green, the Gillette silver blue platinum are also great and again similar to the yellow the Nacets are similar enough to the yellows for me anyway, the only Gillette blade I find different is the Rubie, it’s quite a rough blade for me, I used it in an ikon tech before and it opened me up like no razor has ever done, haven’t used it since, o haven’t tried the ones in the black packet yet👍
The Wilkinson sword blades in the video the paper on the blade looks similar to the ones sold in the EU, there just called Wilkinson sword, Gillette’s not in the name but they look pretty much the same ones, I find them a very mild blade, I usually end up with a lot of hair left on my face after 2 passes, depending on the razor you use, my favourite razor is the Karve Christopher Bradley brass with the G plate, the blade gap is massive, 1.36mm and 0.19mm positive blade exposure I think, there perfect in that razor but in a mild razor it doesn’t work for me because of the type of facial hair I have 👍
I like the attention given to the classics, but if you wouldn't have said it was a red tip tribute, I would have had no clue. Other than the tto being red, they look nothing alike. I would expect a tribute to actually resemble the original. To each his own I suppose
I'm not keen on the look of that tribute either. That red tip is too bright. I'd happily send you a few 50p pieces straight from the uk Ken if you like?
@@kensurfs not at all! If be happy to send them. Your videos have me going through tough times. It's the least I could do. My email is justan.roberts@gmail.com you can tell me where you'd like them sent 👍
To be honest. I’m getting quite fed up with this GSC guy and hes cheap chinese knock offs. He’s just pushing hes products, down to our throats and also turning every RU-vid shaver, to a free advertising channel. Well, it was good to see you using good old red tip! I’m hoping to get one some day. Take care, Ken. Hopefully the family’s all good.
@@TheDobbermn I think he may be using double speak. He doesn’t do business with China but somehow carries Baili razors... so they’re imported to India, where he purchases them? I see Baili being involved somewhere here.
I suspect the G in The Gambia has been worn down to a C; there is no republic nor country with that name. The Cambia was a Bristish crown colony until 1965. The closes I got was a commune i Corsica, France - and they wouldn't use a 50 p coin.)
Be forewarned: I am going to be a "Grumpy Old Man" in my commentary today. #1. Nickel-Chrome, hell they're both SILVER in color. Personally, I will not waste my time and energy not to mention money worrying over such. #2. Chasing the BBS in and of itself does not lead to irritation or a greater risk of getting cut. Mediocre to poor pre shave technique, a lack of properly hydrating the skin, mediocre to poor shaving technique and a dull blade(of any brand) collectively are the factors that lead to getting "nicked' on the 3rd pass. #3. I wonder why there is a "tribute" to a razor that is neither rare or particularly iconic?
Outstanding shave Ken, plenty of 50 pences available mate. Our currency is worth 25% less than it was in 2016 due to the gift that keeps on giving. Brexit. All the best mate.
Ken your son is right! These razors are "tribute" razors. They are supposed to capture the spirit of the original. I think they do. They are as close to the real thing as you can get. Great video. I had a Charger exactly the same as your brothers. I can't wait to see the video.
