Variety is the key to enjoy your shave, that's why we, the wet shavers, have a lot of products and razors in our den. The most valuable razor in my collection, and one of my best shavers is a Valencia open comb slant from France. Valencia slants were produced by Leresche, another brand with great history and several razors in their arsenal.

I just received my 1962 Gillette Slim this week and now it looks like I need to add a slant to the list. I'm not sure who costs me more money, this channel or Doug's. Thanks for the great videos Matt!

Nicely done Matt💈💈 Good comparison shave and review. I figured the slant would edge out the Red Tip on geometry alone. I've learned to use a standard DE as a slant for certain areas by tilting the razor. Not something I recommend to a novice though. Great video again👍 Enjoy!

Good afternoon Matt! Nice showdown. I really love my Gillette Red Tip. In fact, I have two. I found the 1955 (A4) gives a superior shave compared to the 1958 (D4). I never shaved with a slant, so there is no comment or basis for comparison on my part. I do like the TOBS creams. Nice slickness and good post shave feel plus they are easy to lather. Thanks for making these educational videos...they are a great resource.

Matt, another great video. I have an iKon X3 slant and love it once I figured out the slightly different technique of longer strokes. I can’t compare it to a Red Tip, which is in production for me made to order. Can’t wait to get this fantastic Gillette razor. But when I compare the iKon X3 slant to my other regular DE razors, open or closed Comb, I found out that it much more depends on a real sharp blade, like the Feather. Guess this comes with the slicing action rather than the cutting. Will try a Merkur 37c and get one from your shop right now! Razor Emporium, you guys are doing a really great job. Thank you!

I must confess that I am surprised at the comfort that I realize from shaving with the 37C. I suppose that this slant is the solution to cutting the tough, dominant grey hair that is my beard today. My DE rotation is a merkur futur, and this short handled slant. Both are loaded with feather blades. It is said that human beard hair is as tough as copper wire of the same diameter, so I want the combination that will give me the most hair elimination per stroke. I use the futur on a 4, and second pass against the grain on a 2. When I use the slant, I go 1 pass with the grain, one pass across. Not BBS but DFS.

Matt back in the old days people use to do the gellette slide they would hold the razor at an angle and go down or either hold it diagonal I still do it with my old gellette razors but with my slants I don’t have to do that but you probably already know that

Hi Matt, Great review! I have the revamped red tip Gillette razor that you Rhodium plated as well as Above The Tie Slant. I like the slant using a slightly less aggressive blade than the Feather - I do like Feather but prefer either a Rapira LUX or Rapira Swedish SS blade in it because I am much older than most of demos we see I have to hold the razor harder on the face to get the whiskers cut. As for the cream the black box Taylors for sensitive skin I find a little better - Nivea is also really good.

Hi matt great video! I too have a course beard and sensitive skin and I only do a one pass shave. I have slants as a well, but with my regular non-slanted razor I do a Gillette slide but with the razor head parallel to the floor and then I move it diagonally, the same way mantic59 demonstrated it with a cartridge razor and in fact Gillette actually recommends shaving that way from the old catalog. With this technique it’s almost like shaving with a slant. I still do prefer a slant for the closest shave, but the Gillette slide is pretty efficient too. Love your videos and your technique as always

FWIW, I have a Red Tip and a RazoRock slant. I've never felt that the Red Tip was especially aggressive, but the slant does have more blade feel on the face. That said, I may not be the best person to comment because highly aggressive razors have never made much of an impression on me. E.g., my reactions to the Mühle R41 & the Razor Rock Jaws were "Gee, really nice and comfortable; what's the big deal?" Anyway, do I get my T-Shirt now? (Just kidding. Thanks for the videos, and keep up the good work."

Checked further and noticed that I’m not alone with this problem. Yes, I have sensitive skin but can use a lot of different brands without any irritation. But especially TOBS Sandalwood seems to be aggressive on specific skins. Check out the ingredients and you’ll find a lot of chemicals. Unfortunately, the scent is very classic though.

@BuffaloNickel9
@BuffaloNickel9 Год назад
@@kwl189 Yessir you are correct about the greatnes of The Merkur 37C aka "37C Slant" is a knurled short-handled razor with some of the best Grip you'll find in a stunning time-tested razor that shaves aggressively, but *feels* oh so *SMOOTH*... you really can't get a better combination when pairing the 37C Slant with a Japanese Feather Blade..Many of the Gillette's Blades work most excellent in the 37C as well. Including the platinums and Gillette Black super platinum's, 7 o clock yellow... Who wouldn't want a razor that feels as smooth as any mild/very medium DE but yet mows down your whiskers as if it's an adjustable set on 10. The Feel & irritation free of an adjustable on setting 1, but hair popping results of an adjustable on setting 10! As someone who has copper wire-like coarse beard with sensitive skin, I feel I'm the optimal test subject who must find the most aggressive best results a double edge razor can give your whiskers, and I'm looking for the smoothest least irritating feel. Some of these gentlemen with tree bark tough skin could save with my grandfather's old plow and wouldn't know the difference... I admire though you say you're shaving with another razor, you know that the 37C gives Superior results. Plus if a Gent doesn't like the shorter knurled handle they can get it in a longer knurled handle.. You should get your 37C out for your next shave and pair with a feather or Gillette blade.. Good luck Remember most mild razors pair best with a very sharp aggressive blade and you can get a pretty good shave with an open comb and a mild Derby blade.. Remwmber this- the 37C, though delivering the best results even compared to any aggressive razor, is in my opinion best paired with a very Sharp aggressive blade as if it were a mild/ medium shaver simply because of how mild we both know the slant razor makes the shave feel.

Wow, this may be the end all be all comparison video right here! I was always a slant/aggressive razor guy but lately have been very surprised with a mild razor and sharp blade. One thing I have to call you on is the one pass BBS thing. My hair lays so flat and grows in swirls that even with the best possible prep the best I can get is SAS from one pass, even with a straight. Even barbers have commented on this before. Not trying to argue, just simply telling you that I can't get a one pass BBS and I'm NOT lying.

have you tried cold water shaving?
@ianmuessig

@RazorEmporium yes, I actually have always shaved with cold water since I started as a teenager (hot water irritates my skin) and I even take cold showers. I have trialed hot water shaving just out of curiosity and it was always worse then cold so I stuck with it. The closest I ever got to 1 pass BBS was with the PAA BOCS with a fresh astra sp and even then I needed an ATG pass to get all the way there. Again, I wasn't trying to argue and hope you didn't take my comment negatively. Your videos are always informative, timely, interesting, and educational without being overly long or drawn out.

Yessir you are correct about the Greatest pairing of The Merkur 37 Chrome & Feather. Merkur 37C aka "37C Slant" is a knurled short-handled razor with some of the best Grip you'll ever find in a stunning time-tested razor that shaves aggressively, but *feels* oh so *SMOOTH*... you really can't get a better combination when pairing the 37C Slant with a Japanese Feather Blade..Done!Many of the Gillette's work most excellent in the 37C as well. Including the platinums and Gillette blacks super platinum's, 7 o clocks etc.. Who wouldn't want a razor that feels as smooth as any mild/very medium DE but yet mows down your whiskers as if it's an adjustable set on 10. The Feel & shortness irritation free of an adjustable on setting 1, hair popping results of an adjustable on setting 10! Why this wouldn't be everyone's first choice is beyond me. As someone who has a copper wire-like coarse beard with sensitive skin, I feel I'm the optimal test subject who must find the most aggressive best results a double edge razor can give your whiskers, and I'm looking for the smoothest least irritating feel. Some of these gentlemen with tree bark tough skin could save with my grandfather's old plow and wouldn't know the difference... those are probably the same guys telling you to buy an astra or shark blade😉

Crazy! These were the last 2 razors I got! Got my mint RedTip for $20 shipped and I traded 2 soaps for my 37C. I already tried the RedTip and loved it, going to use the Merkur 37C later tonight
