GT40 Panamericano - Racing México's La Carrera Panamericana

It took Karlo Flores two years to prep the car. Turning a Le Mans car into a Carrera car is no easy thing. It's a great story.

The Carrera Panamericana has some unique challenges that a Le Man car was never built to handle. That is why it took 2 years to prepare this car properly. Mexican roads are far tougher than La Sarthe because of the speed bumps. In one day of racing you might cross 200 "tope". Chassis stiffness and ride height are crucial. The suspension and underside has to be able to handle the one speed bump you don't see before it's too late. Heat is a killer in the Panamericana both for the teams and the engine. Many mods are made to move heat away from the engine. Racing Le Mans you're almost constantly moving. In the Carrera you're transiting open public roads, get stuck in traffic, waiting the time controls and start lines. Overheating is a major issue. Finally, in the Queen stages of the Carrera, such as Espinazo del Diablo, you're making 20+ turns per kilometer. That's 20+ braking zones and 20+ accelerations. Brakes and gearboxes take an incredible amount of abuse, even it you're driving to preserve the car. In talking to the owner I know this GT40 replica needed major modifications to the engine placement, chassis stiffness, engine venting, and suspension. Ultimately the car did well because of the owner, builder, and crew.

Unfortunately that GT40 RCR crashed the next year. It's being rebuilt and I think it will be racing again in 2024.

El trabajo para transformarlo en un auto Carrera Panamericana fue realizado por constructores mexicanos de autos de carrera. Lo corre un equipo mexicano y cuenta con el apoyo de mecánicos de carrera mexicanos.

La réplica del GT40 se llama "Karol" en honor a Carol Shelby. El conductor es Karlo Flores. Lamentablemente el auto chocó en 2021, pero estoy seguro que algún día regresará a la Carrera Panamericana.

Lo más probable es que sea una réplica, los originales valen millones de dólares y son ya reliquias conservadas en colecciones privadas o museos, muy poco probable que si es original arriesguen a sacarlo a carretera.
