GTA 3 Dreamcast: Another Progress Report

We've got a long way to go, but here's some progress made over the weekend, resulting in a significantly less buggy game.
Some 3D models have been optimized, better speed hacks have been implemented and some engine/game variables have been adjusted. The number of pedestrians and vehicles now matches the PS2 version but there are more improvements in progress. Please note that bugs are normal at this stage as is still a work in progress.
By the way, someone asked for MSX FM in the comments, so enjoy!

It's getting very close to being actually playable. It might help if they optimize the models by fixing the weird limb attachments and deleting polygons that never get seen

You're doing good work. Lots of room for improvement, GTA 3 was very inefficient compared to later games in the series. So I think there's a ton of potential

it's amazing how much progress you're doing in such short time!! I am wondering something for both performance and polish, would it be too complicated to integrate skinned skeletons from vice city? that should allow further reduction of triangles on humans i think?

Always thought that it could have worked on the Dreamcast, and likely would have fit entirely on a single GD-ROM. Great progress. Will be fun to see just how far this can be taken.

I knew it could run also. Ya, with out gdr disc we are losing 40% of disc space compared to a cd Which is a lot. . CAN'T wait to play on my dc ! Sega4life Dreamcast4life

Would never have worked properly on Dreamcast, GD ROM does not stream fast enough. It was marginal on PS2, and PS2's DVD drive is much much faster. Lack of RAM for the Dreamcast would also guarantee major downgrades to the game's assets as well as just lack of GD ROM storage space meaning way more compression and difficulty with asset quality

Ps2 got lots of downgrade version of games black ,re4 gta 3 v etc. Now dc is working on 16mb of real hardware wip my friend be patient ! In graphics the dc going to blow the ps2 gta 3 out of the park ! falco_girgis also keeping us updated what's going on ! Wip. Sega4life

Mip Mapping and 6:1 texture compression pretty crucial in a game like this I imagine? Still, tough port as game is constantly streaming data straight off the dvd...can remember my ps2's laser working overtime 😂

Man essa é a versão de PC...talvez eles usem os modelos a versão de Ps2 q são mais leves. Pelo oq ele falou acima da entender q estão reduzindo o número de pedestres e veículos devido a pouca memória ram...emfim, deve ser superior a de ps2 pelo fato de ser a versão de PC...mas a de ps2 ainda vai ter algumas coisas superiores.

Great stuff man impressive work pulling this off on hardware slightly inferior than the PS2 especially on the RAM side of things. As an idea, would it be worth reducing the draw distance down to gta 3 alpha levels (say from the February '01 build) maybe higher just so the frame rate is more stable?

This just makes one ponder if the Nintendo GameCube can run any of the RenderWare GTA games just as good as the PS2 and original Xbox can if the Dreamcast proved all neigh says wrong.

@@Frogbull55 but in terms of the disc format the GameCube uses it would be have be to split into multiple discs juxtaposed to the DVD format of the PS2 and Xbox.

@@Swordslinger-hb1ns not sure, GTA 3 on Mac is on one CD for example and Vice City is quite light too, only San Andreas may occupy a full DVD but you can compress audio and some assets and I'm sure it can fit on a GC mini-DVD

Excellent job! Maybe you could disable the radio stations if you play from CD and have the option to activate it if you play from gdemu or dreamshell. I also wouldn't mind if the game ran at a lower resolution, since I'd be playing it on a CRT TV!

Well the Dreamcast GTA3 was the first in development cancelled kept the same assets it’s still Dreamcast under the hood ported on the ps2 Xbox, GC.

Was looking at the gitlab repo, is the replay system still active? If it is, that thing is a memory and cpu hog, it wasn't included in the PS2 version only the PC version.

@@Frogbull55anything that can help the project 😊 it’s been an amazing job from you guys so far Checked out an interview from Obbe and he estimated that the replay system could use around 10 to 20 mb of ram, might be exaggerated, but any cult of memory helps to fit it in 16mb

@@2fernandoc1 yep, the pc version has tons more geometry. Things like fences, stare wells, water towers, billboards, etc. They're working on getting geometry down to ps2 levels or possibly lower with smart reductions most people will never really notice.
