In the Beginning is the introductory cutscene of the GTA San Andreas story mode.
Carl makes his way back to Grove Street after five years away
CJ returns back to Los Santos after his mother, Beverly Johnson, is killed in a drive-by shooting. After arriving at Francis International Airport, CJ takes a taxi back to Grove Street but on his journey back, the taxi is pulled over by a police car.
Inside the car are Frank Tenpenny, Eddie Pulaski and Jimmy Hernandez, corrupt members of C.R.A.S.H. They handcuff CJ and take his money, believing that it's drug money. Tenpenny welcomes back CJ to Los Santos, making it clear that they've had a run-in before.
They take CJ away in the police car and let the taxi drive away, albeit with CJ's things inside it. Tenpenny starts describing how not 10 minutes ago another police officer was gunned down and will pin the murder on CJ if he doesn't behave. They drop him off, away from Grove Street, and tell CJ to be available when they need him.
Alone in Jefferson, CJ is left with a BMX to get himself back to Grove Street.
Since 'In the Beginning' is not considered a mission by the game, when the initial cutscene ends, the player is free to explore Los Santos before actually going to Grove Street.
In the Beginning: Mission Objectives
Get on the BMX bicycle.
Follow the "CJ" icon on the map and go to Johnson House in Grove Street.

Carl reunites with Big Smoke
While there is no gameplay in this mission, it does see the reunion of CJ and Big Smoke. CJ arrives back at Grove Street and heads into the Johnson Family home. CJ's mind is flooded with memories of his past life, leading to him picking up a picture of his recently deceased mother and sitting down with his hands in his head.
Sweet & Kendl is a main story mission in GTA San Andreas, given by Sweet Johnson.
It's the 2° GTA San Andreas mission in chronological order, and it takes place in Los Santos.
Sweet reunites with Carl, relaying what happened over the past five years
CJ and Big Smoke drive to the Vinewood Cemetery, where Beverly is buried. CJ reunites with his two siblings, Sweet and Kendl. Kendl is happy to see her brother, but Sweet berates CJ for not showing up to another funeral after he skipped their deceased brother Brian's funeral pre-game events.
The two brothers start arguing, leaving Kendl annoyed. She walks off, saying she's going to see Cesar, her new boyfriend in a rival gang, much to the annoyance of Sweet. CJ says that as long as he treats Kendl right, he has no problem with the two seeing each other. Kendl leaves as Sweet starts telling CJ how messed up things have got, with more deaths in the Grove Street Families happening.
As CJ, Sweet, Ryder and Big Smoke leave the cemetery, Ballas show up and attempt a drive-by shooting, destroying the gang's car in the meantime. This leaves the four of them escaping back to Grove Street on BMXs, with the Ballas hot on their tails. The group end up splitting up, with CJ, Ryder and Big Smoke biking around Los Santos to get rid of the Ballas'.
Eventually, the four reunite at Grove Street, without Ballas in tow. Sweet asks CJ when he's leaving, but CJ says he's staying around this time as things are all messed up. The group all go their separate ways, ending the mission.

Get on the bike.
Follow Sweet.
Follow Ryder.
Big Smoke, without realising that CJ has returned, threatens him with a baseball bat before recognising his old friend. Big Smoke apologises to CJ for what happened to his mother, with Big Smoke saying they'll find out who killed her. The pair leave the house to go off and meet Sweet at a cemetery, ending the cutscene.
