How the “Next Gen” upgrade should have looked from the beginning back when it was initially released in March of this year. Great comparison as always 🙏👍
Apparently it was sorta implemented, just not activated. I remember when data miners were checking the files for the next gen versions they mentioned the game had a lot of Ray Tracing implementations in it's code, like Ambient Occlusion and Reflections but they were all disabled, probably because they didn't work correctly or were unstable at the time of release
After I saw the performance of gta v on the new generation, I expect that gta 6 will run at 30 frames, with a resolution of 1080p, up to 4k, using AMD fsr technology with ray tracing.
@@jehadhjaya2767 im not sure you realized they will be able to much further optimize a game still in development than a game that was made for a console 2 generations ago
@@michealadebz I mean xbox series x and ps5 will still be stuck at 30fps this is in no upgraded home hardware released But currently, I'm looking at Dying Light 2, The Witcher 3, and even Commander of War, all of them work at 30 frames with dynamic ray tracing, dropping to 1080p!!! And remember that the better the graphics and details in games, the more difficult it becomes to reach a higher frame rate, especially with ray tracing technology
I wonder why they didn't market this in the trailers leading up to release. They were very vague of what upgrades the game would have. Not that it's that much of an improvement, but the ray tracing is a nice touch.
@@robinfuijk Do you know whats happening behind the scene? I guess they had a Roadmap for the next gen version and added new changes later on. People are playing this game because of the multiplayer not because of shiny reflections in the Water and more realistic shadows. When im saying "they dont give a damn" im talking about how Rockstar treats its customers. Of course they deeply care about profit and therefore making this cashgrab for the "next gen" version on the "new" consoles.
RDR2 would really benefit from RTGI, RT Reflections and Shadows + AO. Switching all the local lights to RT shadows would help a ton with smaller objects that shadow maps suck at doing and don't disappear like screen space shadows do when out of view
When doing a comparison, use Director Mode. You’re allowed to freeze time, increase traffic and pedestrian density to get a better look at everything, allowing for everything to be almost the same but the time in the comparison exactly the same.
It looks like ray tracing does apply over the planar reflections of the water. At 5:25 you can see those plants have a little bit of reflection on the ray traced one, compared to rt off where you can't see those. It's a subtle difference.
It’s incredibly cool to see this technology implemented into this game. However it sucks that I am so tired of playing it, I probably won’t ever enjoy the added features.
I went through this game on 360 when it came out and thought it was well-made as is typical of Rockstar's games, but I didn't love it and stopped playing shortly after I finished the story, but I got it on PS4 and the first-person camera changed the experience for the better to me and so I've put a lot of time into it, which means when I got the PS5 version (discount due to having its PS4 version, otherwise I may have gotten it on Series X), I hardly played it. That said, just hearing about the ray-traced reflections, I've decided to install it again, and have to say, with the extra ray tracing, it shows me that when a game holds to a solid 30fps, I don't mind forgoing performance modes (even though the extra 30fps would be nice) when it has extra bells and whistles and a crisper resolution.
@@johannessguten2527 Nah I doubt a PS5 Pro is coming. Not like this generation needs pro consoles like last generation. PS5 needs a slim version though
It still could be better, but it’s very good for such an old game (saying this because in some cases, shadows don’t exist from certain light sources, and the way they diffuse reflections in certain lighting/circumstances make the reflections disappear completely, like at night in the rain when looking at cars at certain angles)

i hope that GTA6 engine will have rt reflections cuz it will look dope in vice city they've already implemented this in gta6 engine i suppose, cuz they've implemented some things from RDR2 engine in current gen version of gta5 ,modern TAA for example
Probably in GTA VI it will not be anything new that we have already seen here with GTA V, now it has just updated the RT for this almost 10-year-old game. I just hope that in GTA VI it will have an updateable map for seasons.
Im playing this game on PC right now for the first time (LOVE it). And I was literally thinking "Wow this old game looks pretty damn good, but the lighting is by far the weakest element". And now they release a RT update! Uhmm is this launching on PC anytime soon? I guess once I finish the game :D
The one thing that would make this game look 10000x better is to get rid of that grey filter they seem to have during the day, especially when the weather is clear. If the game was more vibrant and had the raytracing my god it would look amazing. Every graphics mod I’ve seen gets rid of that grey overtone and it always looks so much better. Wish rockstar would’ve done that
Honestly i like this more than GTA VI leaked footage. I hope they change it in the final because since its in the same engine as RDR2 it has this weird soft filter and bloomish atmospheric effects that doesn't fit with gta vi city environment. Just my personal opinion though. TL:DR I think this art style is more fitting than GTA VI regardless of GTA VI obviously having better graphics at a technical level.

Rougher surfaces are harder to calculate so they left them mostly out of the RT reflections. But still it's a clear advantage over the game's standard planar, cube, and SSR based relfections
I was about halfway into the story mode when I stopped playing the PS5 version but this update made me jump back into it. I already preferred fidelity mode but some of the reflections on windows were bugged before this update and it brought me out of the immersion. So glad this update fixed and enhanced the reflections.
As usual, I'm not a fan of the unrealistically pristine and clean surfaces with RTX on. Things never look like that in the real world, unless it's some exhibition where they showcase vehicles or something. But those shadows do look rather silly with RTX OFF, especially under the car.
For all of you who says : " on PC? " On PC we have been able to see it BETTER than in this update for a long time, with the mods there are RT and multiple graphic improvements that make it look much better.
Hope to see some rt performance reflexion at full hd 60fps someday.. but its hard, rockstar really dont like to make their games runs at 60fps on console.

@@jehadhjaya2767 mostly probably nope, itwill run better, good to remember that GTA V is very old and a basically a frakenstein of implementation, hundreds of gbs of updates in an older engine, which add scalability issues within newer hardwares, it need to redo a lot of the older code if you want to use 100% of the current hardware. Probably GTA VI will run at 4K dynamic 30fps and 1440P dynamic 60fps.
@@hicarodestrui Don't you think that AMD fsr and nvidia dlss scaling technologies are important for massive games like gta iv to maintain fidelity and graphics without sacrificing performance?
i wonder if these reflections are RT or cube mapping. they dont look like RT (most of the time) i feel like its a mix of rt and cubemap and i like it, feels like its way easier to render for xsx. i feel like reflections on cars are cube mapping bcs sometimes reflections angle is weird.

why did they release this only for consoles tho? 🤔 Genuinely asking
Because they'd have to update the PC engine to support ray tracing features, which would piss off a lot of modders, plus they would have to change the minimum requirements for people to run the game.

GTA 5 finally went "next gen" 10 years after release 😅. Just give us GTA 6 already! But this looks really good, never the less. Also these options should've been there with launch on next gen and free
I’d be curious to know how many paths it can trace, like if you set up the “mirror In mirror” trick. Can it trace a reflected reflection?? Because that’s a seriously taxing effort if so. Not many games have managed to do multiple paths. The only one I can think of right off the bat is Doom Eternal on pc
probably not on a console. The reflections in this update are near mirror like on almost every surface. and thats fine. but for those true to life reflections there would need to be transparency reflections for things like glass and other see through materials(which it has for car windows), multiple bounces in the reflection (keep in mind that RT reflections rarely include lighting and shading as thats very expensive), and there would need to be more diffuse reflections for things like wood, stone, any opaque and dull surface. that is very expensive tho, and not many games have those kinds of features. ray traced shadows are also the least expensive ray tracing feature, with global illumination being the most taxing on hardware, and thus usually not implemented in games, especially on console. but Metro Exodus does have full RT lighting and global illumination and its a real treat for the eyes, and looks stunning on console. keep in mind that ray tracing isnt an on or off setting. there's different uses and applications that yield different results, and not every game adds ray tracing in the same way. For example, Spider Man Miles Morales has RT shadows on PC, however the shadows trace a low poly model of the original asset so a boxy leafy bush leaves an odd boxy shadow with no leaves actually being calculated in the shadow, so it doesnt renter period, which is an intresting way to save performance. another thing to keep in mind is that ray tracing isnt always such a dramatic change, and its strengths are in its subtlety, making the scene more cohesive and grounded. i like to say ray tracing looks more "correct" where you wont really notice the nuances during gameplay, but your brain does.
Path tracing is extremely unrealistic for the consoles. I bet the lighting really only has one bounce so that they can keep the performance up. Any more bounces would be too much to calculate. Other games with path tracing on PC are in easier to render games like Minecraft or older games like the case with Quake 2 and Portal
The science of cutting your framerate in half for minuscule visual gain. Does it look better than stencil shadows in stills? Yes it does. Does it look better in motion? Only for the few % that both have a NASA rig and are willing to listen to the coil-whine and fans of their computer. Where pathtracing starts to pay off in visual impact is when you do real time GI with bounced light on your diffuse surfaces, not just direct reflections like this. This stuff will be cool in a couple of years when hardware can keep up with it, atm it's just fluff.
I'll happily forego 60fps if it means the kind of RT and other benefits we see here, as long as it's a smooth 30fps. The Witcher 3 update is a prime example of very worthwhile benefits being betrayed by poor frame-time stutters and frame rate drops. If they can fix it up to be as smooth as GTA's 30fps mode then I'm all for it! Think I'll have to play GTA again now!

@@jehadhjaya2767 yeah I wouldn't be surprised and tbh after seeing Witcher 3 run just above 1080p using FSR 2.1, I think it would be a pretty decent image overall! Will be interesting if they manage to optimise enough to include any RT features too!
