The maps. The one included "Iron Range". Was there a good size iron deposit? Was it worked? The rock cuts. It may depend on the type of explosives that were applied as they have different characteristics. Have to wonder why someone went to the trouble of cleaning the RofW up for that distance.

There are extensive iron deposits in the area, including the Gunflint and Matawin Ranges around Thunder Bay. They are basically an extension of the iron ranges that are found in northern Minnesota. There were extensive explorations done going back to the 1800s, but no mines have ever been developed. The only iron deposit that was worked in the region was the Steep Rock Mine in Atikokan. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunflint_Range There is some ATV traffic on this part of the grade, so I guess it was cleaned up to make it more passable.
