GTX 670 and i7 3820 in 2024 - E-Waste or Still Good For Gaming?

A friend stumbled upon this ageing relic, a Cyberpower PC from circa 2012, that was actually pretty decent for its day. This is rocking one of the earliest HEDT chipsets - HEDT meaning High-End Desktop, as in the extra-core’d, extra-IO’d CPUs on an extra expensive motherboard - with this being an X79 board, and i7 3820 CPU. The graphics card though, that’s where it’s at - a GTX 670. This was, depending on how you looked at it, the second or sort of technically third most powerful GPU NVIDIA made at the time, with that confusion stemming from the GTX 690, which was actually just two GTX 680s SLI’d together on one PCB, but still. The 670 was an impressive card - but together with this i7, how does this fare in 2024? Is it e-waste, or is it still good enough for gaming? Let’s find out!

that PC is in the unfortunate position of being too new to be interesting to collectors, and too old to be useful, cause a new budget system will outperform it and use way less power

AMD made Intels HEDT platform obsolete with Ryzen. And it happened fast. 3960X would give it a boost for a while, even cheap GPU upgrade. They were beasts back then, IO is insane. Thanks for the nice video!

If you're on a budget, a b series board would be fine, so b670 or b760. If you want to overclockyou need a z series board, so z690 or z790. Most of the major brands boards are decent enough, although hardware unboxed do some excellent reviews if you want to know an exact model.

@@ARONJAMESGARCIA I got a MSI z690 edge , it has a extra nmve slot , I think that 3060 will struggle unless you are on 1080p , I had to ditch my 3070ti however using 4k

About the gtx 670, maybe the driver is holding it back? I mean amd modded drivers often gives a good boost and features on older cards that the ones from AMD somethings can't even run most of the recent games. Could explain why CS had the improvement and the others not, that or CS itself wasn't using the gpu entirely and the cpu reached the limit. Seeing the gpu usage could help to understand why CS had the boost. The 720p issue was tied to what exactly? Could provide some room for that 2gb limitation on vram but if the gpu performance were poor anyways, wouldn't solve much. If you can find an old amd gpu from that era and use modded drivers could give an interesting feedback too. Dunno about any modding scene for nvidia gpus to suggest that, tho. Either way, looking the gpu usage on CS go could give more info about it being the outlier on the test.

I have an old rig with a 580 TI still. It can still play some f2p titles etc rather well. But it gets more FPS with modded drivers vs an up-to-date one on say WOT to name one

1. Upgrade cpu to i7-3960X or better (6c/12t) for $50 on Ali-Express. 2. Look for cheap used/clearance deal on rx 6700 or rtx 3060ti/3070. Easy and cheap upgrades for modern 1080p gaming!
