I love Guadagninis. I have a very soft spot for them, for their power and their indomitable temperaments. They are musician's instruments, with compelling personalities of their own- and that's the thing with violins: you have to fight for them. It's not that you master the instrument and bend it to your will, you have to coax it out of it's shell, place trust in it, and learn how to work with it. A violin is a living, breathing individual, simply because you- the violinist- give this part of yourself into the instrument. It's a beautiful thing.
And I'm waxing ridiculously poetic about this violin because it is gorgeous. The tone is butter, and it just tweaks the corners of your mouth upward because it is delicious to play, a wicked thrill. It also happens to be my former teacher, Lewis Kaplan's, violin- so there are countless premieres that happened on this instrument- to make it even more interesting!

Leo Machuda,s family in Chicago own a Guadagnini violin. He let me borrow it at Notre Dame several times when I soloed. It was tremendous.

What a lovely violin, very clean edge and wonderful depth. I guess it help that it was being played well but it sounded like it had been played well over its entire life.

Those trills are "on fleek" as the kids say. 😂😂 I hope life has been good for the both of you! How did your first concert go last month??? I would have loved to have been there!!

@@masael255 Concert went really well! Of course, there's always bits that you wish you played better, but, you know! The vibe was super positive, and it was a full concert, so that's we're looking for! And geez- 'on fleek'?? my kids always are rolling my eyes at how outdated my speech is, but I've never heard that one!!

@@kathanater88 That's great! It must have felt great to do a concert after this long haul of social isolation. So happy for you guys! Lol "on fleek" is a few years old. It was primarily used to refer to well done eyebrows but I have cringely adopted it to be anything well done. It might have been a California thing but see if your kids roll their eyes to it! 😂

G.B. Guadagnini worked with Stradivari in his younger years. He didn’t suddenly start making masterpieces in 1740. Phillip Injeian wrote about this in the Strad and how Guadagnini’s hand can be seen in Stradivari’s later violins, including the 1737 ‘Ames’ Stradivari.

Hi Katha, listen to Montagnana violin then remember the Guadagnini you just played. its the same tonal range. Both violin have extraordinary range from B to G. What does this mean there is high possibility the Lorenzo master was Domenico Montagnana in Venice.. The question is how did Montagnana learn this fancy stuff ? He reverse engineer Gasparo Da Salo. Lorenzo was more then a farm manager but top tier Luthier.

Strauss Concerto.. a good idea! Incredibly underplayed. Just starting to get back into concertos, and leaving the idea of orchestras behind. (Who can wait a lifetime to play this music, just for want of an orchestra??)

I know. it is a weird question, but you are so well suited to answer it, since you played so many of them: What are the main differences between the stereotypical Strads, Guarneris and Guadagninis? Is it even possible to talk in "stereotypes"?

That's a super tricky one, since you can't really peg one description onto each maker. That being said! Stradivaris tend to be smaller than Guadagninis- not necessarily than Guarneris- and tend to have a very fine, pure sound. The best ones are like spun gold, truly just an exquisite sound! Guarneri I'm not going to comment on, because I just don't know them well enough! But Guadagnini is like the polar opposite of a Strad- at least his Turin period- big, weighty sound. Not so fine, real monsters of instruments- power houses that are incredibly fun to play! So, in very broad generalizations, I hope that answers your question! :)

Increased hickey = increased practice time: did he borrow you his violin for a while? ;) What's interesting is the incredible perfection of the flames on the back, while the top has a very huge imperfection. Normally, you would not necessarily chose this kind of wood because you don't know what you will finally get out of it, but it seems he was able to handle it very well. It's kind of brave building a violin like that, and it is very unique. Imperfections are beautiful, but most customers don't want them. Maybe it was just a proof of concept for Guadagnini if even this wood will work? We'll never know. Did I already mention how much I like this series? :)

At 6.08 that violin could easily(?) be played with almost no vibrato at all . The sound is so clean and pure. That might be a big adjustment for any player, but here the demonstrator has an ideal steady bow hand to try that . It`s a violin with a big generous sound that needs a large room at least . One to remember .

That's one of the things that is always a tell from these instruments- how does it sound in it's purest form, without vibrato? It's the most shivery, ecstatic sound! :)

HAH, it did the same for Illya! I suppose I'm more used to that, but it's funny how especially players from the older generation seem to be even more comfortable with their instruments than we are!
