Guardians of Gabon: The Fight to Preserve Africa's Lush Rainforests And Forest Spirits

Gabon's soul lies hidden beneath a thick green mantle, the source of most of the Gabonese traditions, medicines, spirituality, and resources. A precious heritage that a small number of men and women protect. We meet Kombo, a Babongo hunter, and Juste, who is in touch with the forest spirits.
In human cultures in general, and perhaps particularly in Africa, the landscape is the first shrine of tradition. From the sand dunes of Mauritania to the currents of River Senegal, to the Lions of the Beninese savannah to the spirits of the forests of Gabon, this series explores the origin, the nature and the survival of deep links between several populations in West Africa and their habitat.
Each episode takes us to discover an emblematic landscape: the river (Senegal), the desert (Mauritania), the forest (Gabon) and the savannah (Benin). A compass of escape and meeting which rests on two main pillars: the spectacular character of the places, often classified with the UNESCO world heritage, and the charisma of the main characters who are transmitters of their respective traditions.

The guy during initiation says"I feel tall and handsome " and I'm thinking but you are? Love this documentary and I wish we had more of these insightful stories. There are more of these environmental presevative cultures and unfortunately most African govts fail to see the importance of this favouring more mordern approaches. Nurse Plaxedis is totally amazing I bet Johnny enjoys those massage sessions. Very clean hospital and the electric wheelchair is a true blessing.

What a fascinating informative crucial piece of information. Why can't the govt see the necessity of the hospital ? Meeting the villagers needs? Humanity? Guess the villagers will have to come together the REBUILD such an important necessity in the community. Much blessings on this lovely nurse...May the Most High Yah cover her with ABUNDANCE OF EVERYTHING GOOD. Soooo much forest! It's amazing! The culture customs etc.. the doc's visits reminds me of home ( but I didn't notice him wearing any gloves🤔) .. .. ancestral practices are alll transported....nothing new under the sun! Surely we allllllllll would thrive n be more productive if we understood n lived in n with nature! Respecting the land resources animals while we eat work build around it.... FASCINATING INFORMATIVE VIDEO! , THANKS

A beautiful and rewarding insight into Africa's secluded communities where traditional value systems are upheld. The more I learn about Africa, the more reverence and respect I have for the people who's rich cultural, natural, and spiritual inheritance have forever been the envy of the world, the west in particular.

The young man, Juriste, found his soul and footiing, its a great feeling to feel secure in life.....There is no excuse for the state of the hospital, no excuse. D Schweitzer devloped an excellent foundation and they should have built on it. Nurse Praxette, what a soul, she deserves all the honours befitting a nurse. Dr Flamer and the eastern nurse remind us of being human. The Babongo live such a wonderful life in the forest. ....11% of the land as a reserve is good, but I wish they could raise is to 40-50% because, there are plant species that can help humanity and fetch a premium, thereby no need to cut down the forest! I apologise, but I cant stand the chinese man in the forest, chopping down trees for a quick buck...The gorillas are wow! our relatives ! the shape of the silverbacks' head resembles what some tribes do... disfiguring their skulls from birth to a similar shape...and the behaviour of the gorillas, is...just amazing and humerous

Humanitarian, reverence for life and environmental stewardship are all traditional African principals, as even displayed earlier with the traditional healers. So why are they giving the European colonizer so much credit for these principals when he came to a land that was already practicing these things? 🤔
