In human cultures in general, and perhaps particularly in Africa, the landscape is the first shrine of tradition. From the sand dunes of Mauritania to the currents of River Senegal, to the Lions of the Beninese savannah to the spirits of the forests of Gabon, this series explores the origin, the nature and the survival of deep links between several populations in West Africa and their habitat.
Each episode takes us to discover an emblematic landscape: the river (Senegal), the desert (Mauritania), the forest (Gabon) and the savannah (Benin). A compass of escape and meeting which rests on two main pillars: the spectacular character of the places, often classified with the UNESCO world heritage, and the charisma of the main characters who are transmitters of their respective traditions.

@@manuelmensah6928 I don't think it's that high. Many were from Dahomey, but many also came from the western Congo (BaKongo peoples) and other regions (there were some Yorubas too) and those also left their influences on the culture. The Dahomean Fon and the Kongo seem to be the two dominant African influences in Haitian culture though.

In 2017 I had a privilege to visit Cotonou and Widha (slave trade area) in Benin. I was wowed coming from South Africa. Flying over West Africa, I felt like I had left earth, Amazed buy the unusual but beautiful landscapes, from the sky. Shed a tear walking on the same road the slaves walked to slave ships. People are still living an authentic less stressful lives, which the West calls poverty. In my opinion these people are rich and beyond blessed, are not starving, able to sustain themselves. Rich in culture, family, tradition. Live like how God intended, one with nature without destroying it. Not greedy, consume what they need with no waste They have smooth skin, better than us bathing with luxury soaps, applying expensive products. They are super athletic, not obese. Live long while healthy and fit. Their diet is mainly fresh and organic fish, chicken, fruit and vegetables, nuts, natural oils. The streets are bustling with motirbikes, beautiful and colorful fabrics, trade. They are very creative and resourceful. Beautiful sandy beaches with rustic bars and restaurants thatched huts. The poor and rich live together in one with only petty theft prevalent. Women riding motorcycles safely at midnight. I urge Africans to tour their own continent to learn about who they are. Strength, confidence sterms from knowing where you come from.

Thank you, for sharing this first person experience of the real Africa. I have lived, loved, studied and worked in every region of the continent for most of my adult life including the southern region from Namibia to Mauritius in the East African Ocean. That’s right. I’m claiming it for Africa NOT India, a thousand miles away. Our home office was in Sandton, outside of Jo’burg and from there we had projects in Durban, SA; Meseru, Lesotho; and Mbabane, Eswatini. We then did projects in Windhoek and Port Louis. We were installing computer labs in schools. Although, I have yet to go to Benin, your experiences parallel my own travels in other countries in Africa. While travel to Africa, for some reason is always discouraged, when you go there you’ll be amazed to see every major city and resort flooded with European tourists eating everything up like it’s a secret candy buffet on a cruise ship. I only wish more Africans from the diaspora would GO AND SEE FOR YOURSELVES.

I'm white, but have always lived very much like that; even in the USA. It's not hard unless one buys into the constant push of more is better. I have always cooked from scratch, well until I got to about 71. I got ill and still after several years am slowly getting worse. My nurse aid fixes a frozen meal, I'm not sure I've gotten used to the difference in taste, but believe it's not really nourishing. Still I am better off than people I went to school with, or even my neighbors. Laying a strong foundation early in life is perhaps the best thing one can do to make their body strong. learning how to cook is easy, and cheaper in the long run. Check certain spices like Turmeric and Curcumin. Not much is needed in stews or soups and both help strenghten the immune system. There are others too, do some research and try them out

Trust me you and people can reverse it. The European culture have no staying power. When there're little blockages at the tail end of a funnel, the water on top of the funnel has the power to push it down right? African culture plus its food, medicine, clothing, music, mannerisms and language is that water on top of little European blockage at the bottom of funnel we know as south Africa. It will be washed away with time. Why the pale people as the "3rd force" that encourages xenophobia against other Africans and hide their hands, because they see the influx of the rest of Africa coming down as a threat that will flush down their little culture to the sea as the end to their existence as a culture.

*What I know for sure is that these people living such a basic life in such rudimentary villages and houses are much happier than many people living in nice houses in upmarket areas, earning a lot, and driving expensive cars in the western world.* *Suicide is unknown among these people, while it's part of life among those living the aforementioned upscale life.* *Life is not about the materialistic. In fact, non-materialistic life leads to happiness.*
