The overall problem with nearly all the superhero movies(all franchises) is that villains are frequently introduced for a single movie installment and defeated(usually fatally) in that same movie. We might get character development with the good guys or even sidekicks, but it's rare with bad guys. Magneto of mutant franchise is the biggest exception.

My absolute favorite line delivery is Ronan's first "What are you doing?" when Starlord starts the dance off. The sheer incredulity portrayed by the ruthless world destroyer is so funny to me. Ronan is so shocked he forgets to even project his powerful voice. The only time he is actually stopped short is due to some Terran obsessed with 80's movies.

Wow, you may be the first person, either in real life or as a reactor, that I've seen not immediately-adore this movie! But, of course, that's the point. I commented on your "Winter Soldier" reaction that I love that that film marks a turning point in the MCU, when they start getting brave, and instead of just doing "superhero movies," the MCU does every genre under the rainbow, just in a superhero setting. If "Winter Soldier" is an early-to-mid-1970s-style hardboiled espionage movie, "Guardians" is an early-to-mid-1980s-style space opera. And, of course, this creates some controversy. Without giving anything away, there are "future" installments in the MCU that are "controversial" among fans. I've loved everything they've done so far, but not everyone feels that way, and I'm genuinely-glad for that. It would have been so easy for them to basically make the same movie (and now TV series) 40 times, but they didn't. They got experimental, and weird, and kept everyone on their toes. Even when it doesn't work perfectly, or connect with every fan, I would rather they occasionally fail, or make some fans unhappy, than for them to get stale and staid. That's how franchises die. Hell, "Star Trek"'s longevity can be chalked up to both its highs being higher and its lows being lower than anything else out there. We remember "City on the Edge of Forever" AND "Spock's Brain" with equal aplomb (TNG? "Best of Both Worlds" AND "Sub Rosa." Voyager? "Scorpion" AND "Threshold. DS9? "In the Pale Moonlight" AND "Profit and Lace"). Who cares about something that just always gets a B-? Regarding "Guardians" specifically, I do think a lot of this movie's tone and humor is heavily based in James Gunn's sense of humor. He's currently (as of February, 2023) 56, so, he's an early Gen-Xer. This movie is VERY Gen-Xer in tone. I'm an early Millennial ("geriatric Millennial," as they say, thanks, "Medium"), so, I'm old enough that the style still heavily-appeals to me. I'm too young to have grown up with that tone, but I was exposed to it via home video in childhood, so, it's still a huge part of my taste. And, I can see how Peter himself can be grating without the context of his "f-boy a**hole" personality just being a cover for his trauma. Dude's a burnt cookie. Hard and crusty on the outside, soft and gooshy on the inside. It's like how everyone learned the wrong thing about James Bond pre-Daniel Craig. "Oh, what an awesome lifestyle, I wish I could live like that!" And, in reality, no, he's a mess. He drinks himself into oblivion and jumps into bed with everyone to make the screaming in his head stop, he's not even actually enjoying anything. In short, not every film is for everyone. I, for one, am very curious to see what you think of "Volume 2," since the two films divide the fanbase evenly. There's lots of MCU fans that love one, but not the other. And I love your reactor "style," so-to-speak, and really appreciate the actually-insightful commentary that you give. What's the point of watching any reaction videos if they feel the same way that you do about everything? Challenge me, give me new things to think about! The joy of watching people like you, for me, anyway, is seeing how people very different from me respond to things that I love. It helps me better appreciate said things, and evaluate my own tastes better. So, keep being honest, and don't be afraid to challenge sacred cows! We need it! :D

It's so strange (in a good way) how differently people perceive art. For me, the Guardians are the most adult films of the MCU because of how much heart is woven into the stories. And this is the first reactor I've seen that is critical of the soundtrack, which I would argue is as central to the film as the characters themselves. Then again, I'm a big music nerd so to each their own. Still love ya, Kai. Looking forward to the next reaction.

When movies in the MCU were first coming out most people knew what to expect because Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor were already well known characters. I think so many people enjoyed this movie because no one knew what to expect going in and what they got was a fun adventure with some interesting and provocative characters. It was really the first MCU movie that existing comic book fans could go in with no expectations and really just enjoy the experience. Not to mention it’s the MCU’s introduction to events that take place off of Earth (and off of Asgard lol).

Considering the entire Marvel universe is fantasy, I’m a little surprised that you didn’t like it. To each their own. This movie surprised me. Going in I wasn’t familiar with the Guardians of the Galaxy. I was extremely skeptical of Rocket. But despite my misgivings I ended up loving this film for all of its action and yes even the silliness. The tone change was a relief and I appreciated the music soundtrack choices. Peter Quill is not necessarily the best character but he has his moments. Groot is great, of course. Rocket won me over pretty quickly. Especially after the bit with the prosthetic. I just had a blast with this movie.

A long time ago, decades before the MCU became its own thing, there was a movie based on the marvel character Howard the duck. The final cut scene shows that character, which pretty much no one ever expected to ever see on the big screen ever again. Guardians of the Galaxy is indeed way apart from everything happening on Earth in the MCU at the moment, in tone too so the surprise and shock are quite understandable, I know I was as I had never heard of them before the movie came out. It's a whole different vibe I can enjoy now that I've grown accustomed to them.

I think this movie more than any other in the MCU showed the quality and care put into these films in the sense that every other character had a built in fan base but even many hard-core comics fans didn't know who The Guardians Of The Galaxy were, and this movie still made us care. Also, I hate to break it to you, but Groot is dead. The "baby Groot" at the end is a new creature, an offspring.

I don't think I've ever seen rank Guardians so low. Not saying you're wrong, just surprising. It's your opinion we come to these for, so I'm in no way complaining, just taken aback. Coming off Cap 2, I get why the shift in tone is rough, thank you for explaining it. I think the Guardians will grow on you over time, but who knows. This movie was such a surprise, even to fans of the comics who kind of scratched their heads at the choice. While virtually everyone knows Groot and Rocket and Star-Lord now, they were not even B-tier comic characters at the time... quite fittingly considering where James Gunn took them with this story as a band of misfits. Odd side note, I took a first date to see this movie when it was out in theaters. Neither of us had seen it and overall we liked it, but she was real muted about the beginning. Turns out she'd recently lost her mother to cancer, so yeah... wasn't the best start for her.

I see what you are saying but I really appreciate the various TONES of the MCU movies because it really mirrors what the actual comic books are. There are super heroes that are in more serious settings and then there are the more not so serious storylines where you have more humor (i.e.. Guardians, Ant-man, and even Thor). Sometimes, it not so much about humor but the super power itself. Many fans don't really get onboard with, for example, Dr. Strange because it involves magic versus science fiction.

What I love about this movie: The humor (which did land for me), the characters of vastly different backgrounds & abilities, and the lore of the overall galaxy they're defending. What I didn't love about this movie: Actually agreed on the soundtrack (a lot of great songs, but forced over scenes they mostly don't fit with), standard villains (big & small) who conveniently pause in the middle of battle, and Nebula's motivations just never rang true to me. Oh, and I cannot think of any rational reason *in* the galaxy why the Nova Corps would design all of their atmospheric interceptors to be able to link together to create a huge energy "net" to stop...I don't know what, other than what they eventually stopped. Overall, though, this is one of my favorite MCU movies. When I watch a superhero flick I want it to be lighthearted, goofy entertainment...and Guardians delivered in spades!

One of my favorite scenes is Peter dropping the orb when presenting it to the Collector. That was unscripted, Chris Pratt simply lost his grip on the prop but stayed in character for the scene, and of course James Gunn used it because it was not only funny and something Peter Quill would do, but showed the character's humanity.

One of the things that Marvel was really successful was at making hardly known comics characters into stars(-lords 😛), Guardians of the Galaxy is the major example of that. Now you know Thanos, the Mad Titan, in his quest to get all 6 Infinity Stones. For what purpose? You'll need to keep watching. So far you have seen four of them, but unless you ask me more details I won't tell any more specifics, like their names. And Rocket's obsession for cybernetic prosthetics is really weird... You are on the right track on some of your speculations, but not entirely. Can't wait to see your reactions on how things plays out. I ended up rewatching it before the sequel came out and I did end up enjoying it more. I think because I knew what I was getting into. Time and distance has slowly opened me me up to it. I eventually decided the best way to approach the MCU is less like a movie series and more like episodic television [of the 2000’s]. Where you have a 22 episode season and while you’re working towards a season finale every once in a while you get some “meh” episodes. Even in the best shows out there.

The guardians of the galaxy is a very fun and amazing Marvel comic book series that wasn't very well known by the mainstream audience or even by Marvel fans who kind of stick within the Sol system so Earth based teams like Avengers, X-Men etc. But fans who loved the comic's adored them. Overall James Gunn did an amazing job at introducing these unknown characters to the mainstream audience making them a household name. James seems to be doing the same with DCU (DC's new shared universe) introducing an animated show following the Creature Commandos a group most people have no idea excited and a movie following the The Authority a DC Superhero group most mainstream fans don't know. People seem to forget that The Avengers were not household names before 2012's Avengers with characters like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor no studio wanted to make movies about them minus the Hulk who was pretty well known. X-Men were much more beloved throughout the 1980s to the 2000s from the New Mutant comics to the amazing 1990s X-Men Animated Series which is why studios jumped at grapping IP's like X-Men, Spider-Man, Hulk, Blade, Daredevil etc. So if James Gunn could make a talking Tree and a Raccoon household names there's no reason Creature Commandos or The Authority can't become the same level of known as Avengers or even The Justice League. Same goes with any unknown characters introduced as long as it's done well people will love these characters. Marvel was smart introducing their big hitters like Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and then bring in lesser known characters. Music: And finally the music is amazing in all these movies and I love how they gave Starlord a Walkman something he did not have in the comics a really great change. I could listen to the soundtrack for hours both Guardians 1 and 2 and no doubt the third film as well which I believe will feature more 1980s music like the amazing Video Game. Original Team (Earth-691) The original guardians were introduced in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 from 1969. This team was active in the 31st century in an alternative time-line of the Marvel Universe known as Earth-691. It seems this universe Divergences from Earth-616 (Main Marvel Universe) occurred around the early 1980s when Earth's climate collapsed in the 1980s due to the erosion of the ozone layer, a cancer epidemic broke out and humanity readapted with bionic implants, becoming a society of cyborgs. Then in 2001 Martians invaded Earth and decimated, consumed and enslaved humanity. For decades. Summed up this Earth had some tragic sci fi history compared to the mainline universe of Earth-616. The Earth-691 original team was made up of Vance Astro, Martinex T'Naga, Captain Charlie-27, and finally Yondu Udonta who is in this film and a character who also exists on Earth-616 as well. Vance Astro is also a character on Earth-616 with his counterpart version having some slight changes. More Popular Team (Earth-616) The team we see in this movie Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora made their first appearance in Annihilation: Conquest #6 from 2008 set on Earth-616 at the time of the Age of Hero's, Modern day just like this movie. Unlike the The Earth-691 team who existed in the far future. Down the line the team met a frozen Major Vance Astro, of the Guardians of the Galaxy a thousand years in the future. This is how they got the name "Guardians of the Galaxy" in the comics after Vance Astro informed them about his team. This Vance Astro was from Earth-691 the universe I spoke about above somehow traveling to Earth-616 (Main Marvel Universe) another universe in the past. Peter Quill, alias Star-Lord actually appeared in Marvel Preview #4 from 1975 as this fun Space Opera character but this has been retconned to Earth-791 or maybe it was always an alternate universe. Pretty much he was reintroduced in 2008 with a whole makeover to his character but parts of his origin story were kept like his mother dying etc. Drax first appeared in The Invincible Iron Man #55 from 1973 which is pretty cool. You'd never think by watching this film that Drax appeared in an Iron Man comic. Gamora first appeared in Strange Tales #180 from 1975 while Rocket Raccoon first appeared in Marvel Preview #7 from 1976 and finally Groot first appeared in Tales to Astonish #13 from 1960. I imagine the creators of the Guardians Comic just went looking for very underused and unknown characters from Marvel's past and said "Hey these guys would make for a great team" thus this rendition of the Guardians was born. Most people don't even know about the original team.

This is a prime example of what I stated in my comment under The Terminator. We can have a discussion of what you feel because you are honest about them, even though others may feel different. At this point in my watching, back in 2014, I ranked this movie as a close #2 to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I was starting to wonder if we were going to start getting movies that felt edging in favor of homogenous storytelling. A thing to kind of grab onto is that they try to fit each movie into a genre that makes sense, but try to build the universe where when others interact from other movies, it doesn't seem forced. Some movies are going to be close to Winter Soldier and others GoTG in tone, while some others will be nothing like them, but I've not seen them force the characters in their movies into genres they don't agree with.

I appreciate your honesty. I have seen *far* too many reactors gush over every popular film because they believe if they give five star ratings to beloved films, they win followers. Personally I loved this film. It is a masterclass in how to introduce a cast of new characters to an unfamiliar audience. The comedy was great and the action was fun. And the soundtrack was a banger. I remember many years ago when the Lethal Weapon series of movies with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover was very popular. But one friend of mine absolutely refused to watch any of them. I finally asked her why and it was because Danny Glover had played a bad guy in The Color Purple and she would never watch any movie with him in it. Sometimes it is hard to realize that these people are actors and we have to separate their previous works or personal lives from the roles they play. It sounds like that may be your issue with Chris Pratt.

This one hurt a little. Out of the 42 MCU projects this movie is my number 1. I think it’s mostly for really personal reasons that just really connected to my life but I also love all these characters. The guardians just have a really unique aesthetic to them and stand out from the rest of MCU. From their team dynamic to their soundtrack etc. Also I really like their humor. Still enjoyed the reaction though.

So, I'll say that I'm in the camp that loves this one. It's probably my least favorite of the three, but... it really did a good job for me, personally. The big thing is that it is a group of misfits, who... legitimately have no place being heroes, but they manage to make everything work in the end, and they come together as a... weird kind of family. As someone who highly values found families, that is one of, if not the biggest reason I love this movie. Fun fact, though. James Gunn initially wasn't interested in directing Guardians of the Galaxy until he really got thinking about the character Rocket Raccoon, and that was the character that really was his guiding force in the movies. I can really appreciate that... less so from this movie, and more so down the road. Still, as always, I can respect where you are coming from on this movie. I look forward to seeing your reactions to the other Guardians of the Galaxy movies going forward.

Definitely Groot, Rocket and Drax are the highlights of the flick. And for me, also the production design. Anyway, looking forward to your continuing journey thru the MCU! Oh btw, fun random fact: the actor that played the "What a bunch of a-holes" NovaCorp officer (Peter Serafinowicz) was the voice of Darth Maul in Star Wars Ep 1 The Phantom Menace! :) The actor who played Maul physically (Ray Park) was an accomplished martial artist, but had a strong Scottish accent, and I guess George Lucas didn't think Darth Maul should sound Scottish 🤣

Regardless of how it fits, or how much you like it or not, you gotta admit, GOTG has the BEST soundtrack like, ever! One thing I love at this point is that even with what you've seen so far in the MCU, each movie is it's own thing. Winter Soldier was a political thriller, this one a Sci-Fi Fantasy film, Avengers a team up film, the first Captain America was a period piece, Thor more sword/sorcery in a way, and so on. They all connect together but hit many types of genres that keeps changing as the films go on.

I think you explained your reasoning behind your opinion well. No matter where someone's opinion stands on a movie, a reactor's honest assessment should always be appreciated IMO. There is a serious side to the movie concerning the development in Peter Quill's character. As a child, he got in a fight protecting a frog. As an adult, we see him kicking small creatures as well as using one as a make-shift mic. Outwardly, he no longer takes certain matters seriously. On the inside is a different matter. He never opened the gift from his mom. It seems doing would represent acknowledgement of his dying mother's request and his refusal to hold her hand. He spent his life trying to bury that acknowledgement. Perhaps he always felt undeserving of the gift. The events of the movie not only reawakened his need to protect others, but it brought back his lifelong inner turmoil over holding his mother's hand. Only when he resolved these feelings could he then bring himself to open his mother's gift. He is now able to acknowledge the pain of his past and what that gift represented.

Ok *THESE ARE NOT SPOILERS FOR ANY OF THE OTHER MOVIES*! I have some fun facts abot this one: 1. Comics stuff: Yondu was in the origanal team, although there were many versions of the team, Yondu was a member of the teams first original incarnation. All the characters and situations in Guardians were created by Arnold and/or Stan. The team first appeared in the partial reprint title Marvel Super-Heroes with issue #18 (January 1969), written by Arnold Drake and penciled by Gene Colan. So yeah- surprisingly this was made before the firs Star Wars, Sci-Fi was in it's prime, and Star Trek just started, so everybody who was a kid in 1969 was happy to read about a new side of Marvel The Guardians were finally given their own series in the existing title Marvel Presents, starting with issue #3 (February 1976). Steve Gerber, still handling the writing, reflected, a year BEFORE Star Wars. At the Post -Credit scene you can hear, and see a talking duck sipping alcohol... he has a name, that a lot of viewers will tell, (so as I) because he's not relevant to the story itself, he's just an Easter egg, and his name is 'Howard the duck'. - Also a fun fact George Lucas and Willard Huyck made a terrible movie with the same character and title in 1986. 2. Movie stuff: Michael Rooker (Yondu) is in most of the movies, that James Gunn made. Dave Bautistas (Drax) makeup in the first movie took over 5 hours to put on. ( He had to stand for most of it) When Peter drops the Orb, that wasn't in the script, Pratt acidentally dropped it, but it fit the character so well James Gunn decided to keep it in the final movie. Gunn offerd the overweight Pratt to CG a 6-pack on him, but Pratt managed to beat his own goal, he lose 60 pounds. And we don't want to forget abot the racoon Rocket was modeld after, Oreo.

Your reaction is odd. This film was the point when Marvel really hooked me. It's a comic book story which would seem to be impossible to be made into a movie, but they pulled it off with amazing results. Believe me, I had ZERO interest in seeing this beforehand, but the mother/son dynamic, the irreverence, the ridiculous characters... It's like an absurd party in which everybody is having a blast--and making a couple of subtle points about friendship and love in the (wildly fun) process.

Nice of you to admit your bias, but I'm not clear why you'd allow anything to influence consciously. The movies aren't related, so I don't get why you'd want them to be. Reminds me of the reaction to Alien 3. It's a decent movie, but folks went into it with expectations, which ruined it for them. I can't fathom such a mindset.
@kaiielle
@kaiielle Год назад
Your comment confuses me a little because I'm not sure what you mean by "aren't related" when you're talking about a movie that is part of a series/franchise. The story in this movie is connected to previous films as I finally got to put a name to a face (Thanos) and it also introduced another Infinity Stone. Do you tell people watching all the Star Wars movies that they aren't related to one another, so they need to drop all biases and expectations of previous films when viewing another one? Now, if your comment is actually about the tone/style of this movie compared to some others, I explained that in my review. It's clear the MCU has a couple different approaches and I am preferring one over the other. There is nothing wrong with having a bit of a preference. My mindset going into every movie for this channel is excitement and I always hope to enjoy every movie I watch. But just because I have that intention, doesn't mean that is the end result. Do you love every movie you've ever seen? Have you never gone into a movie hoping to love it and then the credits roll and you realize you don't?

I don't know if you caught it, but Denarian Saal, the Nova pilot who was leading the squadron holding back Ronan's ship, was played by Peter Serafinowicz who has a great number of credits to his name including the voice of Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace. Also, though I don't think it is conveyed well, the Groot we knew properly died, baby Groot is a new Groot. And, lastly, I'm with Kaiielle on ranking this movie near the bottom of the MCU heap.

Yes, it doesn't mesh well with the feeling of the previous movie, but you gotta remember at the time, we had a 4 month break between these movies releasing, so it was a lot less jarring. Upon rewatching it later, I like it less and less. Obviously the jokes don't land as well if you've seen them before. I'm a moderate outlier with this movie. I didn't love it the way most people seemed to, and I didn't dislike it. It was just... fine. I adore Rocket and Groot, both individually and as a pair, and the two were easily my favorite part of the movie. I really wish we could have a movie of *just* Rocket and Groot. I was about to quote my favorite Rocket line ever, but I can't remember if it was in this movie or volume two, and I don't want to accidentally spoil anything. I have a hard time explaining how I feel about Drax, because I loved the humor about him being too literal, but otherwise didn't care much for him in this movie. I was fine with Quill, but that's it. He was there. He was fine. And Gamora, for some reason I can't put into words, just irritated me. The soundtrack isn't for me personally, but it too was fine. (That word just fits how I feel about the whole movie so well!) For me, the only scenes that really stand out in my memory are all scenes with Rocket and Groot. But there were definitely scenes in this movie that I did *not* like. Quill and Gamora on the balcony talking about footloose, for one example, and the most egregious being that "dance battle", which made me physically cringe. But when I really think about it, I believe my lukewarm feelings about this movie come down to Ronin. Any time he was onscreen I just kind of tune out. As a villain I found him completely one-dimensional, bland, not at all intimidating, and he was defeated far too easily to make the climax of the movie feel satisfying. Unsatisfying final confrontations seem to be a common theme among all the movies I rank at the bottom of the MCU, actually. I do love that you're keeping your opinions real. Keep it up! Everyone has different tastes, and I'm always fascinated to learn why someone might not connect with a movie I love or might love a movie I hate. I know the feeling of not being keen on a movie everyone seems to love. You're not alone. There are multiple movies I don't like at all that people almost universally call "Great," "Flawless," or "Classic," and one director who many people say is one of the best ever whose entire filmography I either dislike or outright hate.
