I never met this man, but had occasion to phone him in 1997 when I knew I was going to be made an RSM. I wanted to replace my pace stick with a particularly good one and thought who better to ask than the GSM how I should go about it. I called him cold (from Canada), but he made me feel like my phone call to him was the most important part of his day. He was an absolute gent. He expressed sincere interest in my unit, my country, and in my career and very kindly put me onto a master pacestick maker who made them for the Brigade of Guards. He kept me chatting for ten minutes or more. A very professional and personable fellow.
Extremely well respected man for the Coldstream Guards and the hole of the household Division. I do not understand how hard it must of been of all of his platoon and the queen herself. I never met the Gentlemen but I know if I ever would of, I would never forget him. Rest In Peace Perry, Mason. You will never be forgotten.
Did several QBP's and beating retreats in the 80's and 90's under this gent - genuinely liked and respected by all the lads (and that's no mean feat coming from a Grenadier!)
Perry was the Platoon Colour Sergeant of 7 (Champion) Platoon, Burma Company, RMAS in 1976. We won the Drill Competition (and the Commandant's Steeplechase) and we could then do no wrong in his eyes: although he would never admit it.
I'm not a Guardsman Matthew Jones - I am 2 Queens - 1RRF and 3RRF but I was so impressed when I researched him for the film for Kenny Nott. What a great guy
So sad to hear of the passing of one of the great Garrison Sergeant Majors, a true legend. R.I.P. sir, as an inspiration to all, you will be sorely missed, but never, ever forgotten.
I did public duties in London District in 1987 and black Alex was the GSM at first and then Perry Mason took over half way through. He was a huge man with a formidable voice and well respected.
Great respect to the Man but like us all his service will be forgotten in every day life We all clime the pole and when we fall off we wait for a plumber coming to the house like anyone else who never served you go in with little and you end up in the same place THats life
To all those who 'knock' Great Britain and Northern Ireland: Listen to what this man says, observe the esteem in which he is held, then ask yourselves: Do you REALLY think we, in the U.K. will EVER allow Republicans to put an end to the lineage which has produced men like this? RIP GSM Mason. x
i to remember him as colour sergeant Mason at Pirbright in1971 as a coldstream guard at 17years old, and after we passed out and were being posted to Germany he came and wished us well and good luck one of the better humane ones
Perry Mason was At Fallingbostal when I was in 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards 💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️sadly passed away in Nov 2017 😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔
i'm not a soldier but i come from a military family ( I joined the police)... this feller and Alex Dumon are examples to follow , whether you be military or otherwise. Sorry, I don't have the words, pride got in the way ..
Can't believe it, just found out....i had the privilege of nearly being jailed by him at the festival of remembrance in the 90s. Rip 🙏 Sir in that drill square in the sky
