I stayed multiple times in Pension Meza, in Zona 1. Loved that place. There was this American writer virtually living there (talking 1984), and he said that the junta loved to cut off people's fingers so they couldn't write angry letters to the editor. This guy was a born cynic and hated Rios Montt with a passion.
yikes! That sounds like the brutality I've heard of too. That era was not kind to Guatemala which is why it's so great to see them finally able to welcome travelers and (hopefully) mostly living better lives. There is much further to go though. If we are to be true travelers (and not just tourists) then we must learn the history, see the the good, bad and the ugly if we are to be authentic and honest with ourselves and empathetic to our fellow human beings who live there. As an American, I must also look honestly inward and see if my country's government made any mistakes that contributed to this horror, and if so, take responsibility, and do anything I can to ensure they don't make that mistake again. Thank you for sharing that story. Rob
You mean the "poor", old general who "deed notin bad..." and is hailed as a "hero" by the Military, the "born again" "Christian" who as President used to preach for 5 minutes on week-ends via chain of all radio stations, who is maligned regarding mass graves in the province... He surely is innocent, just as "dubya" is innocent of 9/11... Right?
@@avieboy this was filmed in 2013 as we made our way through Central America. I've been there a few times before but none since. I'm sure it's changed a lot. I think of the people there often as I'm sure Covid was not kind to them. Hang in there. I hope to get back soon. wonderful people.
