You look radiant today, Amy! 🌺 Your lip color is particularly divine. We have power to uplift others or to bring them down. I’m sad Guerlain employees chose the latter. They don’t seem to recognize people are more important than profit - and you need one to make the other! I was saving up to purchase a Guerlain fragrance but am thinking twice.

I know, gosh, that retro-vintage style bitchiness! What an anachronism in 2022. I didn't know those sorts of sales associates/consultants still existed-- even in Paris. I would have burst out laughing. To have pre-empted a possible sample request and lied that they 'didn't have any' is disgusting when coupled with that nasty backhander about free eyecream. I'm the same as you when it comes to being turned off-- even a heritage brand-- if their customer service at a flagship store is this appalling. We're spoilt for choice, so it's Guerlain's loss.

Hi friend! Thank you for the kind words. I’m with you. I will say, however, that I think this was not the usual for Guerlain and that the scents are ah-mazing, so I still went for it. But you nailed what I was getting at… we always have the choice to lead with support and decency if not kindness… why choose the other? I am sure I’m not alone in that I buy more when treated decently. But maybe the joke is on me because I love the eye cream samples, ha!

@@ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293 cracking up over « retro-style bitchiness »… you are spot on… that is the kind of retail-pre-judgement I used to get for wearing a size 14 in the 80s!! The good news is that the scents are, as the kids say, bangers. Especially Nahema. Hope you are doing great, thanks for making me chuckle.

@@savorsalvagescent2300 Best eye cream by a country mile is Verso Super Eye Serum, hope you'll try it. Best face serum is Medik8 Crystal 3. I've upgraded the retinol strength but oddly find that level 3 is the one I got the most impressive results with-- I'm in good company as most women have reported the exact same. Isn't that odd? I'll go up to the highest strength but wouldn't be surprised if I go back to 3 just to be sure. When your Guerlain runs out, definitely check out Verso and Medik8. Oh I'm with you-- I love Guerlain fragrances too. I'm won over by the simple fact that a fragrance as high quality and well constructed as Shalimar is sold at such a reasonable price point. Guerlain/Shalimar just sits elegantly in stoic silence, raising a single eyebrow as an incredibly discreet challenge to anybody using price and quality of ingredients in defensive arguments when it comes to how they run their own business and criminally overcharge for their fragrances. Shalimar is proof that you don't need to charge eyewatering prices if you're using high quality ingredients well. That raised eyebrow (I'm picturing Sir Roger Moore for some reason :D) is an eternally chastening gesture if you manage to have it target you! Haha. I LOOOOOVE Rivalite Imperiale by Plume Impression but they want just under 200 GBP for a 50ml bottle and it comes with this almost comically over-engineered packaging; this cumbersome 'luxury presentation box' that doubles as a photo display frame. I mean...each to their own, but I'd rather pay 130 and do away with the ridiculous packaging. So much when it comes to price point has to do with marketing. I heard someone in the beauty industry (high up, no names) accidentally let it slip that Creme de La Mer was nothing special but it's position within the corporate structure/branding/marketing dictates a high 'luxury' price point. I noticed her cheeks going red and she immediately changed the subject. Nobody noticed or made reference to it during cocktails later. I felt like cocking a single eyebrow like Sir Roger Moore. Too bad I wasn't drinking a martini at the time, :D PS=I also have a soft spot for Apres Londee. The more I think about Guerlain the more I realise that there are more of their fragrances that I enjoy and respect enormously than there are ones I dislike. What a shower of bullseyes! The most beautifully fragranced arrowheads on the field. ;) You're making me want to go to Paris now. I haven't been in years, for shame. I'll make sure to give as good as I get if I encounter the appalling service you received in their store. The preemptive strike against a possible sample request and the bitchy backhander about the free eyecream sample was UTTERLY shameful. Service like that is such an anachronism in this day and age so just like you, I'd have gotten such a kick out of such retro-vintage bitchiness that I would have clapped, laughed and dined out on the anecdote for years. A 'proper' Parisian experience, bof!

I just found your channel. You’re a love! I really enjoyed hearing about your visits to Guerlain (shame on them for their behavior in visit #2). Thanks for your great review of these classics. I love Apres L’Ondree… it could be my favorite Guerlain perfume ever. I agree with your opinion that there is no other perfume like it. Regarding Nahema, I blind-bought a bottle a few years ago because I found an older bottle, and I knew it was a special Guerlain. However, I wasn’t ready for it then (at that point I was into other not-so-floral-centric perfumes). Also, it was winter when I tried it out and I found it didn’t feel right with my chemistry. Flash forward to two weeks ago though (beautiful, warm June weather), I gave it a wear and found that it’s just gorgeous1

What a cool video. I get that all the time: Shop clerk, “Ma’am, here’s a great cream for you for your eyes.” Me, “Are you intentionally being rude or do you just not know any better?” But if there were a cream that could h help my eye bags, I’d be interested…but nah, none. Lol. I have half a bottle of an older bottle of Apres L’ondee. I had such a strong emotional reaction…it made me weepy eyed. I cry when I’m struck with beauty or happiness. Sadness too. Apres L’ondee has a powerful emotional effect. What’s in that stuff? To be honest, I don’t find it exquisitely beautiful …it’s a violet candy to me, but it is profoundly emotional. For that reason, I want to always have a bottle around. I’m happy Nahema is back. I haven’t smelled it, but want to. Perhaps I’ll go smelling today. There’s a guerlain counter near me…I haven’t been since last Mother’s Day. Time to return. I love your take on smells, perfumes, shops, art. And you look great…always great. And price points. Price is definitely something that calibrates my love for a perfume. Thank you for your very informative and beautiful videos!

I just discovered your channel, and I love it! I started wearing Nahema because I’d read that it was Shirley Manson’s, of Garbage fame, signature scent. I blind-bought a bottle on eBay. It took me a while before I really understood and loved Nahema. The newer version of Nahema, to my nose, doesn’t have the staying power of the older creation. However, the scent is the very same, IMO. For some reason I get a little apple cider which may be the peach note. It’s the apple cider vibe that makes me love it, especially in the fall. Not many people talk about Nahema, so thank you for your lovely insights about it here! You’re description of Apres L'Ondee makes me want to test it right away! It sounds gorgeous. I visited the Guerlain flagship at about the same time you did, in 2018 or 2019, and it was a magical experience. I’m obsessed with their vintage fragrances, and the Guerlain staff accommodated me in a friendly and professional manner even after telling them that I wasn’t planning to buy anything on that trip. I couldn’t believe how nice and none-pushy they were. You’re second experience there sounds so disappointing. It’s great that you stayed positive and didn’t let their “attitude” get in the way of your good experience with the fragrances. Thanks again for sharing your experience of the flagship Guerlain store and your insightful reviews of two classic fragrances.😍

Ooh, I forgot to add this: Apres L'Ondee always reminds me of that scene in the Nancy Mitford novel (either Love in a Cold Climate or The Pursuit of Love, I cannot recall which) where an officer fighting over in the Spanish civil war is standing next to Linda and chatting about some adminstrative matter they're both overseeing and then suddenly interrupts himself with, 'What a delicious scent you're wearing'. It was Apres L'Ondee by Guerlain. It will always remind me of English country houses in the 1930s. :)

I'm unsure what to make of this infuriating dragging out of the The Greatest Hangover of All Time regarding Covid and the restrictions. Some people out there just cannot let common sense click in and LET. IT. GO. I was thinking of taking the train to Paris next month (Amy inspired me, what can I say?) but then I noticed that they're still banging on about having to wear a surgical face mask for the duration of the Eurostar journey! I'm...I have no words. Pffthhhp, no chance. I'll only travel when masks become a rarely sighted, personal protection option for the people who are in vulnerable health groups instead of the general population who just cannot fight the monomental behavioural conditioning and social engineering our sloppy politicians and 'health advisors' have subject us all to. For how long is this unscientific, paranoid, low-key hysteria going to go on for I ask? Tsk tsk. I've had three vaccinations and already had Covid (as have most people here in the UK, and I'd guess the world by this point.) Anyhow, I do hope you continue to enjoy Paris and sneak in as much magical, secret thrills as possible into your days and nights there. Bye gorgeous girl. :)

I am so sorry to hear about your experience. They really should have a greater respect for their clientele. I find the Guerlain counter here in Melbourne (David Jones department store) so depressing. There is a person stationed in front of the now overpriced Art & Materials line, and last year when I sampled and tried to purchase one of the now discontinued Elixir Charnel bottles (Oriental Brulant - they had a tester out), the sales person there sold me French Kiss without realising. I took it back when I realised, and she just commented that they look so similar, they were out of Oriental Brulant, and that she liked French Kiss more. Apparently it is more versatile and younger. Ridiculous service considering the price.

I think the reactions to covid have caused people to be less patient with, and more rude/hostile toward others. ugh, sorry for your experience at guerlain. i can't stand that kind of snobbery, but those people are likely just insecure to treat people that way. on the flipside, i once worked at a caswell massey shop in college and we'd sometimes get these rude wealthy people and i couldn't stand them. i also think all the social unrest/covid stress is putting people on edge...people are just more rude in general. in high school (1995) i did a month long exchange thing with a family in tours and they took me to paris for ONE day, so my experience is quite limited, but i felt like they were rude if i tried to speak french and annoyed when i spoke english...i felt like i couldn't win- i was 17! i've had an italy/paris trip with my mom planned for several years now that has been cancelled twice, so thanks for letting me live vicariously through these videos :)

I was just texting with an old friend about how special Crabtree + Evelyn + Caswell Massey were in the 80s when we were growing up (and then sadly, it seems, with the over-saturation of toiletries these and other shops seem to be going by the wayside). I bet working in that shop was special in some ways and abuse-full in others. In my 20s I worked for a specialty shop (a concept store for Pier 1) in an affluent mall, as well as a book store, and honestly, while I believe there are good guys and jerks on every block, the treatment I endured (and witnessed) in those shops was shocking. I hope you get to take your trip soon! I found during my recent trip to Paris that if you attempt a little French people are so so generous and sometimes even excited to speak English (or maybe felt sorry for me, ha). The 2 perfume shops that were snobby… I think they was just that stupidly universal, superficiality + pre-judgement some simple-minded people execute to feel better about themselves, as you say!!

@@savorsalvagescent2300 sorry to hear your experience too-working in retail was not easy! though honestly most customers were fine, that's why it was so surprising i guess. anyway, i am so glad to hear that speaking french went over well. i had been brushing up on my french and italian for the trip, but i am very rusty compared to back then. after my brief 1-day stint in paris (haha) i have been wanting to go back and spend more time. such a wondrous place. also i miss crabtree & evelyn so much. i know a lot of it can still be found but i miss some of the old scents (same with l'occitane's old scents.) hope you have a good weekend :)

Amy love you in colour! How bloody rude suggesting you needed eye cream i would have lost it and told her where to stick it and not purchased anything so rude I have Nahema also and love it I wore it once into the local bank & some 20 yr old boy made faces the ignoramus anyhow you have exquisite taste as both the scents you bought are beautiful, looking forward to your next review xxx

I can't stand rudeness, but I really like being left alone to experience perfumes in a shop. Funnily enough, Angelique Noir is the only L'Art et la Matière that I own. I got one just before the new package and crazy price increase! I am scared to to look up what a new bottle would cost!

I visited Caron in Paris right before Covid hit and I had a very similar experience as you. With a helping of ‘YOU want to buy this?’ thrown in for good measure. I always see those people as pitiable and move on. In that case moving on meant purchasing-didnt really want to be giving her a commission but not worth my time to deviate from my goal. Love the scarf by the way.

maybe they were trying to be "that" kind of store, having that "exclusive" kind of air... or it could just be the staff 🤣 good thing you got some beautiful fragrances... and an eye cream sample 😅😉

I wish there were more of « your » kind of people (supportive, encouraging, lovely) than « that » kind, lol. But the good news is that the scents are ah-mazing, especially Nahema. What is sad to me is that each shop, brand, person has the power to create a transformative experience for others, let’s not be rude, Guerlain! But seriously I love the eye cream samples, so… !!!

My goodness! This was a real treat for me. Thank you. You’re a better person than I because I believe I would have walked out on their assumption that I “probably wanted some samples” and may have shared a little “va te faire foutre!” before my exit. But then again… I’d probably still want my perfumes! Always delighted with your videos. ✌🏽🕺🏼♥️

Thank you for sharing your experience about visiting the Guerlain flagship store in 2018 and 2022. It’s too bad your recent visit wasn’t pleasant. I love Guerlain too. I currently have a bottle of Insolence, Mon Guerlain, Terracotta, La petite robe noire & Teazzurra. Also, I purchased samples / decants of many of the classics. I wonder what your thoughts are about this, I have a sample of Mitsouko edp and I love the middle and base notes but don’t care for the opening. Do you think the edt would reach the middle and base notes quicker than the edp? Do you think the middle and base notes are as intense in the edt vs. edp? I studied the notes on Fragantica and they appear to be the same. What do you think? Lastly, I love Carnation perfumes! So glad you do too! Not too many Carnation centered perfumes in production at a decent price. After sampling a handful of Carnation perfumes I purchased Sweet William by Carner Barcelona. I love the Carnation perfumes that DSH makes but they are about 3 times the cost of Sweet William. Have you got your nose on Sweet William before?

Hi there and thank you so much for this super kind + interesting post. Loved reading about your Guerlain favorites. So, a confession. Though two good friends adore Mitsouko, and I love it too, it took years for me to understand it. It just started to smell good to me about a year ago and I find i love it on a rainy day. I don’t have enough experience with the 2 different formulations to compare how the different notes develop. I’ve had Sweet William on my list for some time. Beyond loving carnation, my dad’s name was William and he grew Sweet William along the border of our garden. But it is a bit cost prohibitive currently, so I will purchase as a treat some day! If you haven’t tried Royal Apothic’s Noble Carnation I believe it is back in stock, and I adore Solstice Scents’ Lace Draped Specter. Best to you!!

Hi friend!! I do need to say that as a whole I find the French to be far kinder than what the average American tourist deserves, ha. I should have mentioned better that I think what surprised me is that I don’t think this is the typical Guerlain experience. Tant pis! ;).

Sorry that those people in the Guerlain shop made you feel unwelcomed , and that the experience left you a bad taste in your mouth .... Incompetence is everywhere , unfortunately ! I own Aprés l'ondée and I feel that it will be perfect to wear it during the summer .... Not longlasting , but beautifull ! I personnaly prefer the bee bottles , so elegant and different ....

Hello, Eileen. The video, as titled, is also about my experience shopping at Guerlain. Simple suggestion, while we are making them. If you don’t like the approach, it is easy to just move on/leave the video, and instead of being so critical and exasperated, you might make your own instead of being critical. Tone matters, and yours is unnecessary.
