Note: i mentioned this was Guerlain's first masculine release, but have been helpfully reminded that it was in fact Mouchoir de Monsieur over half a century earlier.
What's that, you've never heard of this one? Well settle in and i'll tell you all you need to know.
As always, comments are loved, likes are appreciated, and subscribers are my friends.

Hi mate any thoughts on the new Guerlain Vetiver Parfum ? Does it display any kind of characteristics of the original 80’s/90’s version which I’m craving. I have read mixed opinions that the new parfum is very similar to the original Vetiver EDT, or at least, that was the first impression. The opening is refreshingly bright and fresh then smoky ? Thanks

Unfortunately i have no real experience with vintage versions of Vetiver. I did smell the parfum just the once on a blotter in store, and my initial impression was that it seemed "darker" a bit less cirltrusy and vetiver felt a touch earthier.

Just sprayed some on, and now press play. I got mine for $28. Its a tester . One of, if not , best $28 I've spent on perfume. Excellent shirt for the color of the juice, and a limerick. _There once was a man named Pep. Who loved perfume_ _and he had a great rep. Till once one day , he really did over spray, and the folks all said he smelled like a schlep_ *Best wishes and a early happy top o the morning Saint Paddy's Day to ya*

I tried this yesterday, I pulled out an old decant and gave it whirl and thought wow I unlike all my other vetivers this one just keeps that fresh clean sensation the whole way through the scent. When I first tried it last year I thought it was too old school but now I have fully come around to it, its strange how that happens.

When I was in my teens, I saw somewhere, I guess it was some journal, that ladies really like Guerlain Vetiver on a man. So that was first perfume that I bought for myself. Imagine, nobody liked it on me. But I liked it and vetiver is still one of my favorite notes in perfumery. This one is still one of the best and I've tried and had a lot of them.

I remember in one of your live streams I did comment, at first I did not like Guerlain Vetiver too much because it had a slight medicinal angle to it. Something in it smelled to me like alginate, a substance used by dentists. Granted, alginate in fact smells great, but that memory-influenced medicinal tinge did bother me a bit. My favorite vetivers were then only Terre de Hermes and Encre Noire, and I had Guerlain kind of black listed. Over time I kept smelling the Guerlain in stores every so often, and the medicinal tinge actually stoped bothering me completely. Now those three I count as my favorite vetivers, have a 200ml bottle. It is one great all-rounder of a fragrance, and great value/price. PS. TF Gray Vetiver smells great to me, but still I have not felt captured by it as much as to get it and wear it, when already having those other three.

You’re quite right: Vetiver (1959) was Guerlain’s first perfume (Eau de Cologne in the original iteration-later, in 1961, also released as an Eau de toilette initially for the North American market ) which was specifically and widely marketed to a male clientele. This is not to say that men did not wear Guerlain scents before; many extant and now defunct Guerlain fragrances had long been worn by men - especially the more androgynous among Guerlain’s classic perfumes, ‘Jicky’ (1889) and ‘Mitsouko’ (1919), as well as the traditional citrus eaux, like ‘Impériale’ (1853), ‘Du Coq’ (1894), ‘Fleurs de Cédrat’ (1920), and others (most of which centred on lavender, violet, and other soliflores, in keeping with the pre-1960s conventions of traditional male perfumery). Then, of course, there was ‘Mouchoir de Monsieur’ (1904), which although clearly intended for gentlemen, was always a private blend of the Maison before it was discreetly launched for the first time in the 1980s.

@@borealmat1889 - 👍🙂 There is some evidence to suggest that Guerlain had a much earlier fragrance called “Vétiver” from the turn of the 20th century (it appears to have been available until the 1930s). Was the 1959/1961 Vetiver J-PG’s resurrected version of this? One wonders...

Great review and just purchased and wearing today for the first time. It's cold where I live so I'm not expecting a spring/summer performance, but the scent is great. On me, the edt always gets quite ashy in the drydown. Not sure if that would be considered dirty, but I sometimes feel like it could use a bit of a lift. Often end up laying it with a nice bergamot, lime or petitgrain. But for the price right now, I don't think you can find a better vetiver fragrance.

I haven't reviewed it, but i have worn it several times. As a pure vetiver goes, this is a very good accord. My problem with it was that on my skin it was very linear, not as nuanced as something like the Guerlain, and after several hours of the same smell i grew tired of it. Still haven't found a Nishane that i want a full bottle of.

Great review!. This is an absolute classic and the quintessential vetiver fragrance. What's better is that you can purchase it at bargain prices, so opt for the 6.8 ounce bottle. I agree. It's much brighter than Encre Noire, and I like it better than Tom Ford Grey Vetiver. I smiled when you said that you sold your Tom Ford Grey Vetiver after smelling Guerlain Vetiver. You described this fragrance as Guerlain's most utilitarian fragrance for men. Yes! It can be worn in all seasons, day or night, when you dress casual or more formal. This fragrance immediately lifts my mood when I spray it on, regardless of anything that's going on around me. When I reach for it, I'm never disappointed or wish that I would have chosen something else. When I first smelled Guerlain Vetiver, it immediately smelled familiar to me. I describe it as the fragrance that your cool uncle wore when you were a kid. Also, I've seen many ladies write about how they like to wear it. Fine Accoutrements, LLC made a shaving soap and after shave called Green Vetiver that pairs very well with this. It looks like it's discontinued, but you may be able to find them. I concur that everyone should at least smell this for a reference, like all of the classics. When doing so, remember that this is a designer fragrance that has stood the test of time. I think that if you purchase a bottle, you'll find yourself reaching for it more than you might think. Thank you for the review!
