Heard an interesting interview with the band and they said this song grew out of the lead guitarist doing a sound check with what became the first chords of the song! He said the crowd was loud until they heard the finger exercise chords and the crowd just went silent! Burton then came on stage because the guitarist was afraid to stop the chord play, and winged the American Woman lyrics … if true, a cool story!

Its totally true & they DID add more lyrics when they sat down to pen the rest of the song. Burton was looking at some old records a fan had that he wanted to buy. He heard the music wich was ad libbed on the spot to get him to the stage. The rest is history as they say😇💙 If you know anything about Burton Cummings at all it's that he's a huge collector of music & music memorabilia. He still has things he bought as a child with hard earned money from his paper route. He has talked about coming over the border with his Mum & Grandmother to Grand Forks North Dakota to purchase 45's at Woolworth's. Hes a veritable fount of info on old music, artists,tv shows, movies, comic books & collector cards. He ROCKS in more ways they just music😎

Burton Cummings voice carries this band here, and his voice was among the best rock voices I've ever heard, along with guys like Roger Daltry, Lou Gramm, and other select few. He could have added to his stage presence here, with some good moves though, and gave the song a little more oumph, but the song is still a classic, and a great one. There is "no doubt" the Guess Who should be in the Hall of Fame, and Randy Bachman who was part of this group, went on to make some monster hits with BTO ( Bachman Turner Overdrive) All these guys were from Winnipeg, Canada, where the Guess Who started. Bachman wrote the music for American Woman here, but is not shown in this song because he left from disagreements, but went on to form BTO like I mentioned. Bachman is an underrated composer, and he too, should be in the Hall of Fame with Cummings. Bachman wrote other songs like Looking Out for Number One, American Woman,Undone, and a whole mess of other giant hits with BTO.

I'm an American, lived here my whole life of 65 years. Don't worry, there are some great bands from your side of the ocean that our American radio stations didn't play that much either. I've just recently for the past 9 months have been watching every video of every song of the 1970's band THE SWEET. They have become my favorite 1970's band. I'm pissed our American radio stations barely played any of their hits so I never gave them a second thought back then in the 70's. That's a huge mistake, they're one of the greatest bands of that era. They could play any type of music but got even better when they started writing their own songs.

@Scott Ouellette, Rush never had the reach or influence of the boys from Winnipeg. Great band, Peart goes down as one of the greatest drummers of all time. Tragically Hip? Better than Rush, still not as influential as The Guess Who. All that music out of a short career, then Burton Cummings went solo and we also got BTO. More greatness.

@Scott Ouellette, that must have been an old place. When was this? I’ve been to and through MJ many times beginning in 1997 but never heard of the place. I grew up listening to The Guess Who since my older sister did, but we didn’t listen to Rush until Closer To The Heart. I didn’t get into hard stuff/prog/psychedelic until I was an adult, and never did any recreational drugs like a lot of friends (who are Rush fans) did. I missed out on listening to them during my teen years since they got little airplay on the stations where I lived.
