I took an art appreciation course in college and even my professor who majored in modern art said the fine art world is a scam lol.

As an artist myself, who has been practicing different types of art for years, the fact that such a minimal effort piece that’s just 2 big rectangles with a strip of white down the middle sells for $43 million is just depressing when there are so many artists out there that spend hours, days or even months on their artwork, there is nothing wrong with abstract art because that still takes skill and effort to make a well balanced abstract piece. But when someone clearly just put one strip of tape on a big canvas and then painted the whole thing blue, that shouldn’t be worth that much. And it makes me sad to see that a lot of art with such beautiful detail will most of the time go for less money than the art that looks like there was no thought or idea behind it.

As an art student, I’m crying.

My mom told me a story that explains a lot as to why simple paintings or “trash” paintings sell for a lot of money. My mom is really good at drawing fictional things like zombies, elves, orcs. One day, when she was in high school, around Halloween, the bar in town was holding an art contest. She and one of her friends decided to draw three pictures. They drew one picture together and it was extremely detailed, and then each through their own style separate. The themes were Halloween based. Several other kids also participated in this contest. Anyways the day of the contest before nightfall, my mom decided to make one more quick piece of art. It was a big yellow moon with a yellow eyed owl sitting on a branch silhouette across the moon. A very simple painting. And it one 1st prize. Her friend who is now angry at this point at her, asked how a simple owl was better than his very detailed zombie apocalypse drawing. And she said, “You’re presenting art and a bar, everyone was going to be drunk, so something detailed would be hard for them to see.” Just know your audience. Also people who spend that kind of money on “art” is more so doing it because to them it’s a pissing contest.

Rothko died by his own hand. He was super depressed. It's sad and it's even more heartbreaking how his work became more valuable because of his personal tragedy.

As someone that worked in a jean factory, we used actual rocks for stone wash, sand blasters to get the "worn and faded" look. And the tears are made but just cutting the pants then washing them to get them frayed. Also all kinds of jeans were made in Winnipeg, Guess, Diesel and many many others.

As someone who studied art history…for a minor so I’m not 100% a nerd….the inflated valuable of these works of art make more sense when you known the historical context of why that painting was significant. It’s not necessarily about the aesthetics, more the value of owning that piece of history. Also for a lot of these painting that were “cheaper” it’s because there’s iconic pieces that were purchased by museums a long time ago that will NEVER be put on the market again. But if for whatever reason they went for auction they’d shoot up in price ~ especially those Van Goghs.

I study art history and those high prices is a very recent phenomenon. The boom of prices began around the 60' and aver since it's been exponential. Actually Peggy Guggenheim which was a massive figure in the world of art collections and galleries said herself that all of this is dumb and that those prices are insane. It's a process of gentrification of art, which hasn't always been a thing. It's sad because the money often doesn't profit artists.

Iris's was painted by Van Gogh at a time when his art wasn't very appreciated. He considered it just a study while he was in a psyche ward but it's become one of his most famous paintings.

I actually covered the onement VI painting (blue with white strip) for a school project and the reason for it being absurdly expensive is not the art itself but the history of owners who have owned the painting. Apparently the painting has gone around many great people according to the internet and hence accumulated value with time.

When it comes to expensive clothes I feel like there's two variants, one of the key indicators for a high price is to make it look as worn in and crap as possible, the other is to keep it as boring and clean as possible with subtle details. Where as cheap clothes they try to sell and make a name so they make it fancy and stick out, compared to a known name that could sell a white shirt with some stitching for 5-10 times+ the amount as an identical shirt with a different name stitched on.

So, general rule: whatever looks the most tacky and inelegant is a designer brand, and whatever is the most low-effort trash is high-end modern art.

The reason why some basic paintings go for so much is for rich people avoiding taxes. They buy something, keep it in a cargo container for a while then donate to charity, saying it’s worth heaps. Why rich people pay tiny taxes.

i remember what my professor for art history taught us in art college. those easy looking or ugly looking art pieces are usually priced higher because it's the result of the artist's style's refinement. they start off with the typical pieces that usually looks pretty good to us but as they keep painting, they develop a more distinct style, there by adding more value to the piece.

As an artist the whole concept of deciding how much art pieces will cost really ticks me off I'm an art major in college and we have to study a lot of principles and elements like composition, proportion, value, contrast, texture, negative space, patterns, and different materials we can use for mediums. But you get sculptures and paintings with so little effort that it looks like something a freaking toddler could make, yet somehow they're worth nearly half a billion dollars And the works that actually look like effort has been put into them for some reason is way less It just so insulting, like they're spitting into the faces of the artists that are actually passionate about their work

I’m an Art Ed student (doing my student teaching rn) and while I can certainly appreciate that many of these pieces take more effort, time and expertise than many people probably think…these prices are insane. I just did a “color field” lesson with my 5th grade students last week (the same art style of the Rothko painting and the big blue painting with the white line) and honestly… my 5th graders made some more interesting stuff than that blue painting 😂 like wtf

Andy Warhol is less expensive because he "mass produced" his art work and weren't unique like pollock, Rothko, etc. also, pollock's method of making his abstract "mess" is what made him famous, it's also huge.

A rich person contacts an artist for their work, that rich person has an appraiser claim that it’s worth a ridiculous amount, then the rich person buys it for a bit less than the appraiser says and donates it since charity can be written off for taxes.

The reason for those art is so expensive is there were actually treat like a bond/stock. The riches are not stupid, they generally don't appricitate the art in their home, but rather store them in the auction provider's vault. And after a few years they will trying to auction for a higher price. Also, other company/individual are tend to use them to do money laundary/tax avoidance and other rich people stuff.

He was the first person to make an expo called "Le Vide" ("The Void") where there was.... absolutely nothing. People would purchases "pieces of nothin" and receive a certificate that they had bought some "Void". The most expensive piece of nothing sold at the time was I think around $1600 or thereabouts, in 1958. On the opposite side, there was a rival painter, Arman, who made an exposition called "Le Plein" (The fullness) in 1960, which was a gallery so packed with crap crammed inside that it was too full to even step inside. Unsure if there were any purchases made then.

For your record, Pollock’s art is based on the randomness of the artist’s inspiration. He just throws some bits of paint with aleatory movements ;)

Jackson Pollock was the first artist to break away from using traditional painting techniques, he was ahead of his time considering it was the 40’s at the time. Most of his huge canvases were on the floor, he used a dripping technique and he never had a formal painting background. Sometimes the more you know about the artist and their decision to make this art, the better you understand their reasonings for their creativity
