You've got what feels like a couple of the rarest tools .. integrity and a well-calibrated moral compass. Those tools make *tons* of money. I'd rather gain 10 new customers than stick one customer with $1200 they don't need to spend. Well done, Good Sir!

As a previous service Mangler I prided myself and myself on my repeat, faithful, comfortable customers that would drop their vehicle off and so many of them would tell me that I didn't have to call them except in the event of a catastrophic situation. It was bliss. I always had my technicians save the old parts. Most people didn't have to see them because of the years of good, honest service. I made the disastrous decision to go to Firestone for supposedly double the money. Not only did Firestone screw me out of the money but the only repeat customers we had were comebacks. Previous job was a Ford dealer. Service profits and CSI were record setting. Took me a long time to get them there but it happened. The most egregious thing I have ever done was to leave the family for complete, total crooks. Firestone should be investigated and prosecuted then shut down. My opinion.

@@sarhan5568 I'm Australian, not a mechanic, and was merely commenting on the video, like most of the rest of us. :) I would say 1200 on just the labor might be excessive, but I'm not sure how big a job it is either. A recent example for my car. A computerized transmission module decided to flip its circuits, once you get to it, it's a 1-2 min job ... after you have removed the battery, the battery box, a few wires and lines moved out of the way. Then once the module is replaced, put it all back, so a 1 min swap, is 30 min including the time to reinitialize some stuff due to the long loss of battery power, like window controls, radio module might need to have a password put in so it works (anti-theft), reset the clock, you get the picture.

Knowledge is money. In europe we have to adapt rear lighting o fUS dosmestic vehicles to Euro spec regulation (amber turn signals and rear fog light). Long story short I bouht myself 17' Jeep Wk2 and if you want someone to do a custom conversion price starts at 400 USD to 600-700. Buut there are wonder things like Jscan that let you do that yourself (just buy BT4.0 dongle - 30usd for VIN license and 2 amber bulbs). 15.minute job saved me at least 300USD (and I have Dealership like tool to keep). No new wires, no cutting (well apart for new fog light but adding one for 100 is no biggie).

I hydroplaned on the freeway a few years back, tires on the car were Goodyear Rsa's with 6-8/32" tread depth remaining. I brought it in and had 4 tires put on it. The shop even called me back before the job stating the tires still had a decent amount of tread remaining.

I was just 20 or so at the time and the salesman was a lifetime criminal salesman. I looked at the light on the dash and told him No and he blew his cork! I have done a lot of my own repairs in the passed ( due to lack of money) so i just ordered the parts to do myself $398 for all the parts . My mother had a sudden failure in her Tempo some 28 years ago and took her car to the closest mechanic shop. They wanted a thousand to replace everything between her front and rear bumpers. A friend told me about another shop, Auto Kool in Smyrna GA, and they simply pointed out where the freon leaked from every freon hose connector. All of the o-rings were replaced for $179. About 20 years later, my Accord AC went out, and I took my car to the closest shop, not realizing that it was version 2.0 of the same shop that tried to screw over my mother. They wanted $1500 to replace everything between the front and rear bumpers. This sounded too familiar, so I took it to Auto Kool again, where they found that the freon lines connection plate on the compressor was cracked. They fixed it for about $200. Anytime a shop is suggesting a wholesale parts exchange, you had better grab your wallet and run.

The idea that such a high percentage of techs are parts cannon part changers shows people don't really know any real technicians. I would say that there's a percentage of "malpractice insurance" part changing. It's a matter of not being properly compensated for diagnostic time. The other factor is guesstimating occurs at the front desk. The normal diagnostic time and authorization of book time for tests to be run is shortcutted and they don't want to keep contacting the customer. In sales, there's a formula for success they have that tells them not to follow procedure, but act like it's a magic trick. They want authorization and parts price and labor once, one call, and done. Subsequent contact can cause loss of belief on the part of the customer. He can learn a little, then say, oh its not fixed yet, you want what? More? No, I'll take what I've learned and go have uncle shmoe do it on the weekend, I need my car back today, gotta drive here and there. Then uncle shmoe says, you just needed to turn up the idle and the radio. I put some mechanic in a can in. Those guys Are milking you. So they overdo it. Do it once, and it better be right. SWAG. @@dannylinc6247 diag technicians can and do demand a premium. It's just the simple fact most don't know how. I'm not sure if it's lack of desire or lack of teaching but it is getting scary. I like the fact you are a A+ tech and you are honest about your work your not trying to rob people on work if they dont need it i was the same way as you a shop told a friend of mine he needed breaks rotors ball joints i check out his car didn't need none of it he was a older gentleman they tryed to take advantage of him i think its possible a shop made it leak freon so they could get the job but he took car elsewhere great work love your videos 👍

The thing i find amazing is that Ray`s Boss let him do it,I hope that your honesty is tolerated by management. As i see it if a mechanic can do honest work and still have a job, management might just be honest also……I hope so.

If it isn't tolerated by management, start looking for a new job. If they are happy to screw the customer you bet they will be screwing the workers too.

After buying a used 2013 BMW 335is I took it to a dealership for an in-warranty repair. I then found an independent mechanic who charges half as much for routine maintenance, checks everything at the time, recommended new rear tires and connected me to a discount tire guy. He has me as a lifetime customer and I recommend him to everyone. Honesty results in customer loyalty!

You are a Good Man! I'm an Old Man who is a backyard mechanic. I use to do my own work but as I age the less I work on cars. I sometimes go to Shops and play dumb just to test the mechanic's honesty. Most are but some really try to rebuild your car when you only are missing a bolt! LOL! THANKS for your honesty and I wish you were in St Louis,Mo. I'd definitely have you as my mechanic! My Compressor my A**! 🤣

From a fellow mech across the pond, it saddens me that your comment section, though full of worthy praise for you, still slate our profession. Hopefully your continued battle against the forces of darkness will continue, and over time those will subside. As a side note I don’t disagree with the comments made.

Your real world approach to this is what it's like everyday for us, as a 2 man import shop& a tech of 30 years its nice to see the real circus. From people who don't understand to shops who shouldn't touch vehicles of any type, this is our day, engineers, scientist, chemists & for damn sure social workers its all on us. In my words "the only reason I still do this is so I can witness the madness between people & their cars" & people who actually care, its not easily found but its pertinent, hats off to you sir, keep up the good fight!

When I was a full time mechanic the shop would always get pissed at me because I was more like you. I worked at pep boys in Springfield mo. I’m now a police officer and I have a side job with a small locally owned shop and the owner is super good and honest to his customers. Very pleased with his business. If I worked for him all along I likely would have never left the shop scene.

The tool works on a thermal conductivity differential on the air sucked into its cell. You may want to pause at each location and allow the sample to be drawn in and analyzed. That way you do not miss a leak. Enjoy the videos. Thanks for the advice and critical thinking on repairs!

I had someone buy the shop 2 dozen donuts for doing that once. But in all seriousness, my guess is whoever diagnosed this couldn't find the problem and figured "if we replace EVERYTHING it will have to fix the issue."

Plugged it back in and it's been working for over a year perfectly . Crooked mechanics give the good guys a bad name . Thank you for being an honest one ray

I used to refer to this as 'Diagnosis By Replacement', and it occurs for one of two reasons (although the cynic in me feels that it occurs for both reasons equally!). In the first instance the person doing the work has no idea what they're doing, so they simply replace parts until the fault no longer appears! Secondly, they still have no idea what they're doing, but are happy to quote the customer for the completely unnecessary replacement of the most expensive parts which they really hope might possibly be causing the fault! At no point whatsoever will it have occurred to them that replacing the most expensive part might not actually solve the fault. They stopped thinking beyond the point of calculating the costs of the unnecessary replacement parts, fluid, seals, labour and whatever else they think will not get challenged by the customer.

I always enjoy the hell out of your videos. I especially appreciate the integrity with which you do them. I have been binge-watching for a few weeks now watching each one from the most recent to the oldest. I’m into 10 months old now. I am not sure how far they go back but I won’t know what to do when I finally catch up and only have new ones to watch. I should have started with the oldest and moved towards the newest. My reverse direction makes those videos which have two or three parts come to me in reverse order so I see the end of the job before the diagnostic procedures. Anyway, I digress. Thanks for the great content, the humor and the integrity. It is refreshing to learn from an expert who likes to make money but money is not the primary goal. Customer service is at the top of the priorities…..as it should be. It keeps them coming back.

A system that is low on refrigerant can contribute to compressor failure due to lack of lubrication. Low refrigerant velocity allows oil to lay out in the system and reduced refrigerant flow returns less oil to the compressor. I tell my friends and relatives to unplug the compressor clutch if their AC is not blowing cold air and then get it fixed. Remember the compressor also operates when the controls display the windshield.
