This historic hymn takes me to the welsh mining villages of Wales, we are singing it as our final hymn at St Marys Church, in the parish of Handsworth, Birmingham, U.K. this 3rd of Lent Sunday March 15th 2020. Thank you for the memories.
I dont care about the lyrics, or who leads and who follows. All I care about is how good a song it is. And how good the people are who are singing it...
Open now the crystal fountain Whence the healing stream doth flow; Let the fire and cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through: Strong deliverer, strong deliverer; Be thou still my strength and shield; Be thou still my strength and shield
In the 1960s and 70s Welsh male voice choirs would tour round Britain, selling out concert venues everywhere. Dowlais and Treorchy were the top of the tree but there were many others too. They used to release LPs too. Those were the days.
Lost a good friend recently and this was sung at funeral. I’ll always remember him by this. As I left, I saw a beautiful rainbow which actually “ended” where his house is. So moving, it was like his soul leaving. RIP GD.
Bless this place O Christ we pray and open here a door that no one can shut and grant that soon there will be one Church and one fold and one Shepherd.
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Tonight (April 12), I attended a wedding at my church. We sang this as the Hymn of the Day. It is #618 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.
When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Death of death, and hell's destruction Land me safe on Canaan's side: Songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever give to thee; I will ever give to thee
In the version we do at my school, after the first time we sing the last line, the senior boys repeat the last three words an octave down, so it goes "Feed me till I want no more (WANT NO MORE) feed me till I want no more"
Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer Hymn Guide me, O thou great redeemer, Pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but thou art mighty, Hold me with thy powerful hand; Bread of heaven, bread of heaven Feed me till I want no more; Feed me till I want no more. Open now the crystal fountain Whence the healing stream doth flow; Let the fire and cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through: Strong deliverer, strong deliverer; Be thou still my strength and shield; Be thou still my strength and shield. When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Death of death, and hell's destruction Land me safe on Canaan's side: Songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever give to thee; I will ever give to thee.

One of my favourite hymns. Always give it a good belt at my Anglican Church then I ask my Welsh friends if we (the English) did alright. They can never manage to say "yes" ha ha. Gotta love em.
Good grief, you totally misread his comment. He was saying the Welsh always sing it best, and they can never seem to it as well. He was giving them a compliment .
All I can think of when I hear this is that episode of One Foot In The Grave with the car mechanics' song recorded on a tape in the car (it was to the tune of this). 'They hold a note very well don't they... for car mechanics'
