Guide to Cleaning Your Dinghy
If you're a boat owner, you know how important it is to keep your vessel in top condition. One aspect that's often overlooked is the dinghy, which can become dirty and dingy over time. In this article, we'll go over the steps to give your dinghy a deep clean, including the tools and products you'll need to get the job done.
Step 1: Jet Wash and Degrease
The first step is to give the dinghy a good wash using a jet washer. You may also want to use a degreasing agent, such as detergent or bleach, to remove any grime or patina that has built up over time.
Step 2: Use Acetone
A surprising discovery that can be a game-changer for cleaning dinghies is acetone. While it can be detrimental to some plastics, it has been found to work wonders on dinghies made of PVC or another type of fabric. Just be careful, as acetone can remove glue, so use at your own risk.
Step 3: Polish GRP base with Farecla G3
Another tool that can be used to clean the fibreglass bottom of the dinghy is Farecla G3. This product is designed for body repairs on cars, but it can also be used on fiberglass boats. Use water as a lubricant, and be sure to apply with elbow grease.
Step 4: Check the Fabric
Finally, it's important to know what type of fabric your inflatable dinghy is made of. PVC is a common choice for production-made boats, and can be easily identified by its dark grey or black color on both sides. Hypalon is the other material used.
In conclusion, cleaning your dinghy doesn't have to be a daunting task. With the right tools and products, you can have your dinghy looking like new in no time. Whether you opt for a degreasing agent or acetone, or choose to use Farecla G3 to polish the bottom, the end result will be a dinghy that's freshened up and ready for the water.

Thanks for this. I tried every off the shelf home cleaner and *many* hypalon and PVC cleaners on my Zodiac - with hours of elbow grease and only middling results. Using a touch of acetone on the worst parts was incredibly effective very quickly. Especially my 'rub rail'. Nothing, I mean nothing, would even put a dent in how stained it was. Acetone cleaned it with only some light scouring pad required.

And FYI - I rinsed well immediately and applied some hypalon protectant (303) after the acetone.

I use the same but with a magic eraser and thats very effective on my Zodiac. The old rub rails seem to absorb grime and then keep seeping it out for the rest of its life. Poly Marine have a new inflatable cleaner which is fantastic.

Acetone attacks PVC. Although the results are magic, it destroys the PVC!

Another fantastic video, even though it's essential 5 minutes of you scrubbing a boat clean. Did you ever get the hire boat yard to pay for your repairs, or is the matter still on going?

I have an Avon I want fix up, but A Wass said, "acetone on Hypalon? I did watch another vid where the guy said he used acetone. A Wass put doubts into using it. Another vid said to use degreaser. Your response would be helpful & appreciated.

I'm not knocking this video, because it was very good, but it was not about restoring a RIB, it was about cleaning a RIB.
