I really like the plug and rope tobaccos, but also the flakes. I bought an old device on ebay that was specifically designed to cut these ropes and plugs. With that device it's a pure joy to cut these types of tobaccos, but you can easily do it with a sharp and thin bladed knife like an Opinel as well. There isn't a lot of options when it comes to rope tobacco anymore unfortunately, but there are quite a few plugs available from different manufacturers, at least here in Germany. And I've even heard that the biggest pipe tobacco importer here in Germany is about to import some very interesting hand crafted rope tobaccos from Brazil in the coming year or so. That will be a delight I'm sure.
Shag is more like roll your own tobacco used to make cigarettes. I prefer shag for smaller bowls like clay pipes and hookahs because its finer and drier. Great video Nathan.

Your comparison between sigarette smoking vs pipe smoking is very true. I gave up converting sigarette smokers to pipe smoking. They just don't seem to get it. No pipe gifts for them any more.
😀 i know what you mean Schalk, unless they try it they will find it hard to understand but once they smoked a pipe blend all falls into place. The only issue remaining is the nicotine addiction that takes time for a cigarette smoker’s mind to adjust to a much slower pace of nicotine delivery
😊 Say you add a Smokey sauce on your grilled steak perhaps the smokiness is quite evident but you will probably taste other flavours besides. That said some Latakia blends are more potent then others and some latakias have a musty & slightly spicy sweet note. All English / Balkan blends or Latakia blends have a Virginia that usually mellows the Latakia with a bright slightly citrus flavour so you can taste other nuances besides smokiness.
The boundaries between English, Balkan and Oriental are far from clear. My understanding is that English blends have absolutely no toppings and are comprised of Virginia, oriental, and Latikia. Orientals also have no toppings and are usually dominated by orientals. Scottish blends also have no toppings have a slight hint of Latikia. An example of a great Scottish is Pease’s Fillmore, which is predominately Virgina and Perique with a very slight hint of Latikia. But, again, the boundaries are very blurred.
