When planting citrus trees it's important to set the trees up for success, so today I'll be sharing a citrus tree planting guide which covers how to plant lemon, lime and kumquat trees, including all the steps and planting considerations. I'll be planting a Meyer Lemon tree, Tahitian Lime tree, Kumquat Nagami, and Calamondin.
The video includes information on the varieties of citrus as well as considerations on location, spacing, soil, mulching, weed suppression and protection from wind. I've chosen are some of the more cold hardy citrus varieties in each group - i.e Meyer lemon is the most cold hardy lemon variety and Kumquats are a good choice for growing citrus in a cold climate too. The tahitian lime is a cross with a lemon, so this makes it more cold tolerant than other lime varieties as well. I hope you find this guide helpful for planting your first lemon tree :)

I've been searching all over RU-vid for advice on propagating lemons. At long last I have found a kiwi one. I have planted heaps of lemon seeds and then found out that just because those seeds were from a certain variety doesn't mean that they will produce the same variety of fruit as the seed was so I have decided to keep those germinated seeds for root stock.

Chickens always damage my garden, but I learned a trick. I planted a bunch of trees. Waited about 3 years for them to grow to about shoulder height. Now I have a small number of chickens roaming freely through my orchard. They weed for me, turn the mulch, fertilized, eat bugs, and add to the richness of the garden its beautiful to watch birds roaming through my trees too. It's working great now. But I fenced them in with the trees only, they are not allowed near small plants or vegetable plants

Great selection. And rather envy I am... Two more citrus trees I'd love to have, but I can't in this climate, are Citrus myrtifolia (in Italy is called Chinotto and tasted it when travelled to Sicily, so goood) and, obviously, Yuzu. Although a blood orange tree would be so good as well... problem is I don't know whether those would suit to your temperature ranges... Thanks for the video!
@TheKiwiGrower
@TheKiwiGrower 3 года назад
Hi David, thanks for the comment :). I've got a little chinotto tree in a pot which has fruited well but the fruit are pretty small and full of seeds. They might get better as the tree matures, as it's only young..? How did you eat the chinotto fruit? Also, what do you like to do with Yuzu's? Have just planted a blood orange tree - I understand they need a good amount of cold temperatures for the fruit to develop the deep colour, so will have to see how they go.
@dvdpastor
@dvdpastor 3 года назад
@@TheKiwiGrower Hi! So... you already have it all... uf. About the chinotto is mostly for flavor, not for a juicy fruit. There's a soft drink based on that flavor, the most reknown being Chinotto Sanpellegrino (I bought it thinking of a coke, for the color, and the flavour was amazing)... it's also used for jams, infused liquors, baking... Anyway, the leaves of that tree I've always considered to be very beautiful (similar to myrtle)(and even picked myrtle berries in a different Mediterranean island, Menorca, also a lovely plant). About Yuzu, it's the aroma... also full of seeds, but it's great for any kind of lemonades, for miso-yuzu sauce -and bbq salmon-, again for baking... both juice and zest. And, finally, about the blood oranges, and cold... that depends on the variety, I think (I have some right now in my pantry from Valencia, Spain) where they get a reasonable amount of cold, and are medium red, those from Southern Italy are deeper in color, and don't get much cold. And I've also bought some other from Morocco, quite red, with no cold at all. But you have all those trees and also years to come and see how they develop... lucky you. Give us a peek somewhere in the future!

A question about fruit trees if I may ask. They are not citrus. It’s obviously best to plant bare roots ASAP . However if you are not able to do for a few weeks is it best to leave them in shallow compost( healing in ) or grow them in containers for a few months,till autum and then Plant them in the ground? Mainly do they come to harm or struggle to thrive if they are potted in pots first.? . I have some very dwarf columnar bare root apple,pear, plum and cherries that have arrived way earlier than expected. It’s now winter here but going into spring in about 6 ish weeks possibly . They are about 70-90 cms tall. We have heavy clay soil with rubble and waiting for the area to be cleared and amended. It got put forward . You seem really experienced with planting fruit trees. Hope it’s ok to ask. Grateful for your thoughts. Being able to plant in pots would take the pressure of me but wish to do what’s best for the plants . Many thanks .

Love you videos! Do you have any advice for yellowing leaves?? Since we're going into winter here in New Zealand they're kinda getting abit more vibrant green, but some random leaves are still yellow🤔
@TheKiwiGrower
@TheKiwiGrower 3 года назад
Thanks! :). Yellowing leaves is quite a common issue and there are a few causes for it in citrus - can be things like overwatering, or nutrient deficiencies etc. Some people recommend using a little bit of epsom salts dissolved in water, which helps to correct magnesium deficiencies. I've used a very small amount of epsom salts on a finger lime in a large pot, and the yellowing did seem to decrease quite a bit after doing that. I would rule out overwatering first, otherwise see how it goes and give it a good feed in Spring :)

I was told growing a citrus tree from seed will take ages probably more than a decade to produce fruit and you won't know what type of fruit it will produce and that is if it will produce fruit at all so the seeds I planted I'm going to keep for root stock and graft cuttings from my meyer lemon. What advice can you give me? I think the plants I am keeping for root stock will still be too small to be able to graft some other lemon onto it and when it is strong enough I would like some advice thanks.

I love citrus, though wallabies destroy everything I try to grow. My mother has an amazing lemon tree, and I don’t know what variety it is. The fruit has a fairly thin skin, and for the first 15 years, the fruit had almost no seeds, though there’s more seeds in the fruit these days. It is totally unloved, only receiving a couple of hours of sunlight a day, and my mum brutally prunes it each year to the point we think it has died, but it keeps fighting. I’m not sure if it is a dwarf, or just small because she treats it so badly. I’ll be sad when it dies.

Do you get scale insect on your citrus in your part of the world? Here in the uk I’m always getting scale on my lemon plant.
@TheKiwiGrower
@TheKiwiGrower 3 года назад
Yea we get it here too at times. Aside from using sprays like neem oil, you can also try to deter ants as they are attracted to the sweet secretions of some species of scale insects, therefore to protect that food source, the ants attack the scales natural predators. Some people use a ring of vasoline around the trunk of the tree to stop ants climbing up, and without the ants to protect the scale insects, it leaves the scale vulnerable to predators. You might have already known this, but thought I'd just mention this for anyone else reading through the comments too :)

Hello..I live in Texas ..we had that artic blast earlier this year that killed (I thought) my 20yr old Meyer lemon tree n an orange tree. Growth came up from bottom.I was told my tree might have been grafted n so it will not be good fruit. I also started trees from seeds from this tree. Will they be "lemon trees" OR?? Thanks..
@TheKiwiGrower
@TheKiwiGrower 2 года назад
Hi Elizabeth, I would say it's most likely grafted, so the growth from the base will probably be different. Over here they're often grafted on trifoliata rootstock which is very spiny. As meyer lemons are a cross, I don't believe they grow to type from seed (so fruit will likely be different), and they can take many years to fruit. You could learn to graft though and use them as rootstock, or just be patient and see how they go :). If you want another tree that fruits soon though, best bet would probably be to buy a new tree from a nursery

I use calamondin in marinades, I make “lemonade” with it and I squeeze some over chowmein/seafood. Sadly, all the trees I ever tried to grow in the past 15 years always don’t make it. The grafted part always dies and I’m left with all the useless root stocks. I can never figure out why they die. I buy it from different places: farmers’ markets, nurseries and even home depot and Costco.

Can you please help me with my container planted kumquat tree? It was doing so great in the summer when I was able to leave it outside all the time. I recently brought it indoors due to cold Temps at night. Healthy looking leaves are falling off by the handful. Also, I've lost a few branches that have died, and I cut them back. I've noticed some spider mite webs, and have sprayed with a mix of rubbing alcohol and water. But I think it's something more... lack of light? Or overwatering? Please help, I can send pictures.
@TheKiwiGrower
@TheKiwiGrower 2 года назад
Hi Marlena, could be several things, but yes overwatering is common in colder months and when not in the sun as the soil takes a much longer time to dry out. Maybe stick your finger into the soil to see how wet it is, and make sure it's not sitting in a tray of water. And if quite wet then overwatering could definitely be the issue. And if you can, put it somewhere that gets maximum light in your house. Fell free to DM me some photos on instagram if you need further help :).

@@TheKiwiGrower thank you so much! I think it's severely shocked from moving inside. I'm gunna try to keep it alive with a good grow light and see if it comes back. It kind of just looks like a potted twig at this point...Wish us luck!:)

Just the video I was looking for and very explanatory. Unfortunately it's missing the part I'm looking for. 🤣😂🤣 I have a Kumquat tree in a big container. The first year I purchase it I was able to enjoy the fruit. Every year after that, it gets lot's of flowers but the flowers fall off before it fruits. The tree looks healthy so I don't know what's happening.. Any suggestions from an expert like yourself would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hey, sorry to hear that. It's hard to say without seeing it, but perhaps review the pot size. With potted trees, it's good to replenish the soil every few years as it will eventually run out of nutrients and ability to hold moisture for very long. So you could look at repotting with some fresh soil, and ensuring it has good access to water (without overwatering), and I would also recommend mulching your tree to protect surface feeder roots from temperature and moisture fluctuations. Hope that helps :). You could also assist by hand pollinating when it flowers to ensure that's not the problem

@@TheKiwiGrower Thank you so very much for your reply... I see I have a lot to learn.. After I red your message I went to test the humidity in the soil of the Kumquat tree pot and you are absolutely right. The roots are so bound that I couldn't get the tester into the soil.🤣😂🤣 I took a closer look and I can see the roots above the soil.. I never payed much attention before because the branches of the tree are very low and they obstruct the soil in the pot.. I'm afraid to prune it because I don't know when or how to do it and I don't want to run the risk of loosing it. It looks so healthy and beautiful but if I leave it that way it won't last much longer. 😥😪 Thanks again for your kindness. 👍👍👍… 🌺🌼🌺

How do you deal with citrus leafminer? It keeps on eating the leaves of a small mandarin tree I have and this year was the first year it really started to pick up around 5 years after planting in the ground.
@TheKiwiGrower
@TheKiwiGrower 2 года назад
Hi Toby, I luckily haven't has this issue yet. I understand they're most active in late Summer/Autumn, and feed mostly on fresh growth. So if you avoid giving fertilizer during Summer then there will be less fresh growth going into Autumn, which may help a little. There will be some sort of products you can use for them too I'm sure, but haven't looked into this yet

Nice idea! Yup citrus can be grown successfully in pots. They should do well if protected during Winter. Make sure they still get plenty of sunlight through the windows if you have them indoors for some of the year :)

Unfortunately lemons from seed can take many years to fruit and sometimes the fruit will be different to the fruit you started with. Unless you look at potentially grafting onto it, then it will just be a waiting game.
