This video provides an overview of Judges Guild's initial version of the Guide to the City State of the Invincible Overlord, perhaps the earliest detailed city sold to DMs for use in their home campaign.
At the beginning of this video, I mentioned the later revised versions of the city booklet. I forgot to discuss that in this video but I plan to cover that product and the difference in a future video.

I still have this one on my shelf. This was incredible at the time.

It really was. So much detail and a great place to base a campaign.

Yeah, I have the orange cover version. Really impressive stuff, especially considering the time. :-)

@@KabukiKidImagine how long it took to come up with -- and then type up -- all of that detail! One reason my towns are small :)

@@AZMountaineer LOL All too true. Any time I saw a city all prepared and ready to go, I snatched it up. I remember buying the AD&D Lankhmar City of Adventure book just to use as a nice city... even if I wasn't going to use anything else from it. lol

My brother has been running adventures from this city since 1980 and so many games are memorable and still are. Great gaming supplement and as the video rightly points out those maps were huge. One of the things I always loved about Judges Guild's Wilderland setting was the sense of emptiness and vastness. The GM could easily shape land as they saw fit. Traveling the land was certainly a hazard if not careful. Great history and great fun.

Thanks for the comment. It is great to read about someone making such good use of this supplement -- I think the JG campaign setting material absolutely holds up against any other products up to the current day.

@@AZMountaineer Yes it certainly does hold up. All one needs is an imagination to make it work because it doesn't hold your hand but gives you great freedom to create as needed with just enough background material.

I’m glad someone has finally taken the time to do an in-depth look at this masterpiece. I continue to use it and I have since 1980 when I purchased it. It is so loaded with content and amazing vibe. I don’t think anything else matches it.I loved it so much that I bought the world emperor and the wraith overlord but somehow neither one of those came close to the magic that was in this supplement. Keep up the great work!

Thank you for the comment. It is a classic and really can be enjoyed as much today as when it came out. There is so much depth and detail in there -- it's incredible to see how much Bob Bledsaw was able to turn out in those early days.

Very interesting. Really an amazing product for its day, and still useful. This era is about 5 years before my time and at 14 years old I had no idea about these things. So my expertise here is greatly diminished, so this was really a fun video for me. Thanks, and subbed!

Thanks for the comment, and glad you liked the video. I wasn't familiar with this back when I got started either, but I'm glad to have them in my collection now -- really awesome products that hold up even after all this time.

10:14 Look at those prices for food & drink at The Balrog's Eye. A guardsman would have to save up almost two months wages to buy a single serving of Frog's Legs!! While the same dish at The Silver Goblet costs only 2 CP (vs. 17 GP)!!

Sweet. Bought a PDF 15 years ago for 15 bucks. I remembered adventuring in the city in 1979. I was going to be a DM. Campaign never got off the ground. I was purging old computers and found the PDF on a ZIP disk. For a laugh I put it on my old machine. 2 years later I decided to be a DM roll 20. Guess what I pulled out for them. It is great for a homebrew. I took some artistic license. The Overlord is a front for Major Devil. The World Emperor is a front for a Demon lord. The cities have been exhausted after fighting a 17-year war of attrition. (Afront for the Devil Demon war.) My PC are running around trying to keep the peace and restoring local control of the OVERLORD to nearby towns and villas. These LAWFUL GOOD ninnies' have no idea who they are working for. (Great people and players.) Yet they are blind to the fact who are true combatants. Online there are FINE maps other people developed. Roll 20 makes it super easy. Great content. I forget I am almost 60! Lol. Thanks for doing this.

Yes, it's such an amazing piece of work. While this original printing is not that common, the revised version (which has all the same content and more) comes up for sale on a pretty regular basis.

Understanding that you still have PLENTY of ground to cover with the Judges Guild, another supplemental setting from roughly the same time period, and with the same arcane funkiness, was Dave Hargraves' Arduin Grimoire series. Fortunately, unlike the JG stuff, Arduin is still under active development =^[.]^=

JG made dozens of fantastic products. Their Tegel Manor and Dark Tower adventures are superior.

100%. I'd probably add the Caverns of Thracia as another superior product that JG put out. Some of these are so good I think you could definitely drop them in any campaign, really any edition and they'd stand out.

At 7:46 you state that we might recognize the pantheon being referenced. Are you sure? I think you are referring to the "Temple of Oden", but that's not spelled the same as the Norse God, Odin. Either this is just a local variation in spelling, or it's not the One-Eyed Lord of Asgard that we are familiar with but a different deity altogether. Can you shed any light on this?
@AZMountaineer
@AZMountaineer 4 месяца назад
I am working on the assumption it’s just an “alternate” (mis)spelling for the All-Father of Norse mythology. Otherwise, it’s certainly something Bledsaw made up but never explains. Given the adjoining temples of Thoth (Egyptian) and Harmakhis (Greek name for the Egyptian god, Horus) I think he meant to be using well-known deities there. None of those temples is specifically discussed in the guide to the city state so I’m just deducing from those facts and familiarity with Bledsaw’s work generally.
@rocketraccoon1976
@rocketraccoon1976 4 месяца назад
Just a misspelling. Look at 10:14, where the text towards the end of the page refers to a "Patriarch of Odin".

Where can it be downloaded legally?
@AZMountaineer
@AZMountaineer 5 месяцев назад
I'm not aware of an official download. I have read about the modern iteration of JG having some downloads available but when I looked it seems that is no longer active. If you keep an eye out you can find the revised version of this for sale at a decent price.

It used to be available on DriveThruRpg but that ended in 2020. The current owner and son of the original owner, Bob Bledsaw II, turned out to be an open anti-semite which made other gaming businesses reluctant to work with him. I tried putting up a link to one discussion but RU-vid apparently didn't like the link. Anyway if you're curious the blog Bat in the Attic has a discussion of the whole mess by someone who used to make newer Judges Guild products.
