Today I wanted to go over some quick tips on how to feed and water your orchids and bromeliads properly, so you can keep them healthy in the best way possible.
FYI- There is updated information on this because this is not the correct way to water, this type of species of bromeliads. I am sorry about the mix up, but it happens when there is so many varieties of one plant. I still mist and water the same, the only thing I do different is, I don't leave the water in the cup above any longer, due to the tops rotting out and being wet for too long. As soon as I water, if from above, I empty the top cup after a few minutes to ensure it dries out within a day or 2. I make sure the sphagnum moss gets moist all the way through and try to ring out any excess water inside of the pot and on the sphagnum moss itself, gently.

This is actually the incorrect way to water this species of bromeliads
@StaceyHerewegrowagain

I do keep water in the cup above, being careful not to let it dry out for such a long period of time inbetween waterings, so I will change that, thank you 🙄 I water the growing medium about once every 2 weeks to a month (that all depends on what the climate is doing). Thanks for the info. I'm not too experienced yet when it comes to bromeliads. So many people grow them differently, so it's hard to get correct information sometimes and I usually end up figuring it out myself lol

Nothing is wrong with misting of the leaves but if that is the way you water your bromeliad in the center cup and it’s working for you then by all means go ahead. However from my knowledge and experience with growing and collecting bromeliads, this species of bromeliad, Guzmania bromeliad tend to rot from the center if they have water or moisture in the center cup. Continuous watering in the center cup can cause a build up of bacteria and eventually cause it to rot from the center. The bromeliads that can take water in the center cup are more tough like neoregelia, aechmea and Vriesea bromeliad. With guzmania you water the roots, and waiting till the soil is almost dried out to water the plant again. If any water is to go in the cup it should be a very very little amount.

Very interesting. I appreciate the info very much! I am also not that experienced with these, so any info helps a lot😊 They are difficult little plants to figure out lol. I know that I've had the tops rot out on me before because I listened to a few people telling me to keep the cup filled all the time, but as I grew and got to know them this year, I've noticed, when I let the cup dry out and stay dry for a while, they do much better. I really appreciate you bringing this to my attention. The last thing I would want, is for someone to get the wrong info🙄 I have a question for you since you have a lot of experience with bromeliads. Have you used fish fertilizer on them at all? I'm kind of curious how it would work on bromeliads. I use it for many other plants I grow but never those.
@zaboca09
@zaboca09 4 года назад
I’ve never used fish fertilizer on bromeliads but then again it would all depend on the type of bromeliad you’re using it on, from my understanding fish fertilizer is a bit high in nitrogen content which produces green leaves so you wouldn’t want to use that on a blushing bromeliad such as neoregelia varieties which have colourful foliage leaves any fertilizer that is too high in nitrogen will cause the neoregelia bromeliad or other blushing bromeliads to go through a process called “greening out” where the leaves lose their vibrant colours and turn green. But if you’re using it on a guzmania or vriesea bromeliad varieties I don’t think it would cause a problem because those are annual bromeliad they mostly have green foliage year round. For blushing bromeliads I would suggest using a fertilizer with an NPK that is low in nitrogen, high in phosphorus and moderate in potassium diluted to one eight strength and fertilizer. I suggest also fertilizer your bromeliads no more than once a week but if they look fine just give them a drink from time to time

Ok gotcha and makes a lot of scense. I believe mine is a guzmania, but than again I haven't grown these for that long. Still so much to figure out with these, but luckily, so far so good😊 I really appreciate your knowledge on these beauties.

If the mother dies you want to keep her roots because they are feeding the pup.

Yes! You definitely should, even 1 or 2 to start with that are low to medium light, like my Nephytis and aloe plants that are easy to care for. There are so many varieties of plants in the store and online, that say they're specifically for purifying the air. Those are the best to get, if that's what your looking to do. I have a lot of them and what a difference in the quality of air we breathe now indoors. After a week of just a few plants like these in the house, I could really sleep a whole lot better and felt better as well.

My bromeliads has bloomed and is starting to turn brown right at the top but it has no babies ☹️☹️☹️ Any advice?
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 5 лет назад
Babies should appear soon after the mother plant finishes blooming. It will start turning brown and eventually die off leaving babies behind to take its place. Patience is key 😊 You can just continue regular care as you have and you should get some babies soon😉 My motto is to never give up or get discouraged when growing and to let mother nature take its course. Let me know what happens, I would love some updates😊

@yyes I separated my babies so far growing well with the exception the tip are turning brown but they are growing I have light a fluorescent light with T5 bulbs no other light in my apartment with how can I make my bromeliad are in a separate container please help I want blooms help please
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 3 года назад
These varieties seem to prefer bright indirect light over direct sunlight.. brown leaves can be a few different things like overwatering, sunburn, nutrient burn, poor water quality etc..
@Divinemessages69
@Divinemessages69 Год назад
Your fluorescent light might be too near your plant scorching the leaves, try moving a little further away, I have my plants about 1 - 2 feet from a West facing window and they do fine there only getting a little evening sun with a filtered net curtain, if you want to encourage blooms on your plant, you can try changing your fluorescent light to a red/blue grow light, this encourages flowering, but with patience your plant should bloom in time!

Thank you! It's really potent and high in fertilizer, so just be careful with using it at full strength, if you have never used it before. Go a little lighter for sensitive plants first, than you can always up it, if needed the next time you feed. I usually start with less, than wait and add more with the next feeding if needed at full strength. Usually if you have a great soil medium, you can back off on using the nutes so much.

That toe breakage sounds really painful :( Hope it heals rapidly and without problems. LOL, made a mess. That is what happens when you pot with one hand! Another awesome video mate. I like to also use a sea weed tonic on orchids and broms. We have one called Seasol which is great for them. You can really see the difference when you use it. Better flowers and stronger growth.
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 5 лет назад
Hey Andrew! Thanks, I know right? I always make a mess because I am like a bull in a China shop, accident prone too as you can see lol I've never heard of sea weed tonic, I have to admit🤔 I'll be doing some research. I love finding new products that work from all your great advice! 💟 Is it just like a fertilizer? Can it be used on other plants too?
@AndrewFishman
@AndrewFishman 5 лет назад
It is a low nitrogen tonic, so not a complete fertiliser. You use it in conjunction with a feeding regime. Any plant will benefit from its application. Even cactus love it. I will see if i can find a similar product in the US. Seems this is somewhat similar - www.amazon.com/Maxicrop-1001-Liquid-Seaweed-1-Quart/dp/B000COBUQC

That's great!! Thanks buddy😉 I will check it out for sure because I really need something like this!! We're really excited to try it now.. lol. I'm on such a budget all the time, so I try to grab nutes. and ferts. that are for multi-purpose use. Sounds like what I've been looking for, thanks Andrew! I always value your opinion, you seem like a wise man!

Is it ok to do this with spraying in the Florida heat and sun?
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 2 года назад
It is never recommended to spray down plants in the direct sunlight, especially when it's strong intense sunlight. I spray them down in the early a.m. so they dry off by the time the sunlight gets intense enough to burn the leaves.
@Sunnysets

@StaceyHerewegrowagain

Sorry to hear that, they are really sensitive to underwatering because they have different soil medium and watering requirements than usual houseplants. I wish you luck for next time, remember don't give up!!💟💟🌸🌸I'm here for everyone with lots to show and teach.
