Video by Aaron Dunkel with live footage shot by Michael Nigro, Ben Penry & Joe Patterson Written by Robert Pollard, Needmore Songs (BMI) From the new Guided By Voices album 'Crystal Nuns Cathedral' in stores: Friday March 4
I'm so glad you asked; that's a great question. I noticed the average person is madly in love with mediocrity. On top of that a lot of Pollard albums need repeat listens to understand the full picture. Lazy people aren't up for all that. Plus having 120 albums isn't making it less intimidating for these "normies". I've yet to find anyone who understands why i love GBV, people don't get it. Maybe they will "get it" someday, maybe never, who even cares, we get it.
In an interview Albert Hammond Jr of The Strokes, who is a big fan of GBV, said that it makes it more exciting when you meet someone who shares your love of Pollard's music. It's like meeting another member of a secret club. I wish we were more, but I think at least we are the right ones.
GBV are so consistently good it would be easy to take them for granted but there are so few bands putting out brilliant melodic rock like this these days we’ve got to cherish them. The video is fantastic - really capturing the feel of Bob’s collages. If you overdubbed any of their uptempo songs to these visuals they’d look great.
@@patrickmcwilliams2111 Stooges only lasted 2 albums and one with a different lineup put back together. Not a long enough run. Velvets could be argued for influence, but they only did 2 records with Cale and were more of and art band for that period. I suppose the argument could be made that GBV didn’t have a consistent lineup for long enough, but the core group of guys and Bob had a great run and the new lineup has made a bunch of great music. I’m sticking with GBV as my answer. They’re a goddamn monument! 😉
@@patrickmcwilliams2111 none of those bands are conpetition as their outputs are too small. The great3st bands are like GBV, chicago, led zep, miles davis, Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, Dead milkmen, neil young, the replacements, i dont lnow anythinh about metal but you know some of those guys too. Can, Stevie R Moore. Those are some of the greatest. Your list covers the infuentials, but not the greats sorry bud. *Smug keyboard satisfaction*
How can a brand new song sound like it’s been in my head forever? This is amazing. Can’t wait for the new album. Uncle Bob with Doug, Bobby, Mark, and Kevin (and Travis) are the ultimate GBV lineup!
