As far as U.S. Rock bands, the absolutely stellar melodies from Bob and the gang - they are up there with The Beach Boys as far as 2 of USA's Best Rock bands of all time! 🌝 GBV! GBV! GBV! Sooooooooo cherry! 🍒 🤟🤟🤟
Yeah he's usually too drunk, that maniac! Glad all the times I have seen them he was only half-drunk at the start. Goddamn shame how shit they sounded at Austin City Limits.
@@MrHanzoJinn I thought they sounded awesome. He would add some weird little noises at the ends of some of the songs but the actual vocals for the songs sounded pretty good
0:00 - Glad Girls 3:58 - Alone, Stinking, and Unafraid 7:23 - Game of Pricks 9:20 - interview clip 9:50 - Tractor Rape Chain 13:12 - Cut Out Witch robert pollard is like a parody of a rockstar, but hes also a genius singer-songwriter. they are way ahead of this time and i love it
Drove from Arkansas to Columbia MO to see GBV the same year. Pollard had thrown his back out a little and I offered to help him load the gear in. He passed me the bottle of tequila at several points during the show as a thank you. Will never forget that night...Proper rock n roll!!!!
Brooks Browning That’s awesome! They were the real deal. I jumped on stage, with a few others, at a Little 5 Points show a year earlier and raided their beer cooler. Bob was all about it. Sealed in the memory bank as well.
Saw GBV in Houston. They could have played a 1 hr show. They played 3 hrs and the crowd loved every minute. Bob P is like a artist that will be celebrated 100 yrs from now worldwide
I was watching this whole thing after reading this comment thinking "there's no way he actually says this". Like Creed were a huge deal when I was 14 or something and I only properly got into GBV last year, the 33rd year of my life. There's something surreal about seeing Bob back then making fun of Creed. Haha. It fills my soul with joy.
9:19 13:19 I remember this show fondly. Senior year of college, me in the center and my dear friend on my left (in the red and white shirt). I still have the Miller Light bottle that Bob tossed my way. 7 years later we got married. And my friends' and I played a GBV song at our wedding, using the wedding band's gear.
You're fortunate to have a mother who has excellent taste in music and, in her parenting practices...but, YOU also seem to be a cool and, approachable kid who is appreciative - not dismissive - of your mom's attempts to share and, bond with you. Big kudos to you both. Cheers
I love how Glad Girls has become elevated in status over the years, now becoming a consistent set closer. When I flew halfway around the world to see them play in LA a few years ago and Bob finished by on the refrain "And they're alright", I thought, yeah, they're alright.
Isolation Drills was shit upon when it came out by the diehard fans. It rocked nonetheless. I bought it because the jets were cool and never looked back.
Ok Robert took a shot of tequila, gave a badass speech, and then performed the best version of cut out witch right after. Yeah I'm going to have to watch this performance over and over
@@draft1643 youtube account named draft 16 like this guy made this account just to prove this point lmfao. i do think philosophically you begin to reject the cultural objective standards of sonic symmetry or sense appealing traits as you feel an attachment to the soul coming through the music. even if this is a form of idolatry, i believe it ultimately brings this listener closer to their ultimate connection with music, the universe, and something cosmically peaceful within themselves....
don't think any band could ask for a better crowd Its like the audience is in church whoa and the second song just really got going and that shit is AWESOME! wOW these guys are criminally underrated
for old gbv fans, this video is like the shroud of turin. conclusive proof of transcendent genius by one who may not be of this Earth (Pollard) when he was still youngish and just made amazing songs bc the world would need them someday.
I went to countless GBV shows back in the day, and that's exactly what it was like at GBV shows, the Church of GBV. "Alone Stinking & Unafraid" was like a religious experience in concert.
I have this on vhs cuz weezer and Pete yorn also were on. But I remember this the most. This got me into them then I seen how many albums they have out and I gave up. Glad I discovered this. Great set!!
I hope you gave them another shot in the past 5 years! GbV proper is only up to 36 albums now... but add in Bob & all the side projects & you're looking at well over 100. You might not get through or dig it all, but the ones you do are sure to be with you forever. Edit- dude above me is right, start with those 2. If you don't like the lofi sound then jump to Isolation Drills- it's got Glad Girls on it if you liked that one. Happy to recommend til I'm blue in the face if you'd like any more direction than that! 😁
I saw the mighty GBV in Sydney circa 2000. Bob was walking through the audience and I was lucky enough to meet him and chat. Honestly, by the end of the night the stage was covered in beer cans. Bob was impressed with the Aussie beer VB, and had us chant GVB, GVB GVB! I love this band, a force of nature.
the way he says "do you think she could change my fucked up life" in this set on cut out witch is so fucking hardcore and seems to impact the thematic feel significantly over the progression from the beginning of the song as it builds to the more energetic ending
Kinda makes me wanna stand in my city centre with a huge placard stating im guided by voices ,and stopping randoms saying excuse me sir /madam or sir and madam have you heard the good news ,you havent well its guided by voices and unky bob is my savior
Just saw GBV a couple of days ago at Summerfest. They were a staple on the club scene in Milwaukee years ago, with the likes of Couch Flambeau and Violent Femmes. They deserved to go much farther than they have, as so many bands have been influenced by them.
they sound great. was this the Cobra Verde lineup?. anyway, its all about survival and moving forward. i loved the original lineup, and these guys too. Isolation Drills is an amazing record. i love the fairly recent "live in Oslo" performance too. phases of the moon. its all good stuff
Ya, no, this is not the notoriously half assed cobra Verde lineup. It was pretty awful and Bob really did try to make it okay... But mercifully that lineup fell away...
@@kennyvasquez8007 Doug Gillard is from Cobra Verde. He's playing guitar in this video, and is still a member of GBV. I really feel like the Cobra Verde phase was the beginning of the end of GBV in my opinion. Under the Bushes, Under the Stars marked the peak of their greatness for my money. Still a few okay songs here and there post-1997, but overall the new releases are totally forgettable.
@@Chris.T.Ortez138 *gasp* You don't like Space Gun or Zeppelin Over China or Warp & Woof or Surrender Your Poppyfield even? None of the reunion records even tickled your fancy?
this is a pretty obscure song even by Bob standards (despite them playing it live). you should check out "Time Machines" from the same Lexo EP, it rules
Well when you write 5 songs on the shitter, 3 of them are great!! Obviously with Uncle Bob’s catalog he’s got a ton of better songs! They made a video for Glad Girls and they were signed to TVT and the corrupt criminal corporation coxksuckers had to make some sort of money! And that my friend is my Bob doesn’t deal with any label but his own! So give Glad Girls a pass on the circumstances that it was under! Thanks ladies and gentlemen! Enjoy as much GBV as you can cram into your brain, it’s a wonderful and beautiful experience.
