Hell yeah, but I’m sure we all agree as far a stage presence goes, he’s more bananas when he’s on guitar with his faded yellow Gibson hollow body. Physics: bass = larger + more rhythm section based. He’s right in there with Townsend, Prince, Slash. However, my #1 and #2 picks is a dogfight between Jimi and Jimmy Page.
@EdFredHernandez
@EdFredHernandez 17 дней назад
@@gowiththeflow1476 Well you can't go wrong with any of those guitarists that you named but of course for Guided By Voices I prefer Mitch Mitchell on guitar, it doesn’t get any better than 'Propeller' through 'Under The Bushes Under The Stars' era Mitch Mitchell.
@gowiththeflow1476
@gowiththeflow1476 16 дней назад
@@EdFredHernandez you’re right about Propeller & UTBUTS albums and that era. Under the Bushes was my first intro to GBV. I was blown away! Every single song on it was incredible. I do love Mitch’s whole persona and guitar chops. From the stage energy, gnarly hair and chain smoking while rocking is tough to beat. My first show was 2001 Knoxville, TN. I-Drills tour (also a great release and good songs). 30+ shows later I got to hang backstage during sound checks or whatever. Drinking from their cooler with my friend Brad Brock (He’s friends with Bob and the most dedicated GBV fan I’ve ever known). Brad, even got me a copy of Isolation Drills a month before it was released! Anyway, I always enjoyed seeing and hanging out with DG. If Bob is El Capitan, then I’d say DG definitely would be 4 star general. That said, I say for me that it is almost too close to call. I am going to give DG an extra .5 point because of his prowess and pulling great background vocals. Take care man & thx for the comment. “Long live Rock-a-thon… for the dreams of the weed king, we all sing!” I am going to pull up and listen to “Jellyfish Detector”now.

@@gowiththeflow1476 "Freedom cake! Quick to bake!"... Wow Man sounds like you've had some amazing experiences seeing shows and getting to go backstage with your friend. My only GBV show was a great show it was 2012 on their "classic lineup" reunion tour in San Francisco at the Warfield. Mitch Mitchell was in fine form, there was a roadie who would come and put a new cigarette in his mouth every once in a while. Everybody sounded great, Toby, Greg Demos on bass, Kevin Fennell on drums. It's funny 'Under the Bushes' was the first GBV album I ever heard, I went out and bought it after seeing the video for The Official Ironmen Rally Song on 120 Minutes on MTV ... I was fascinated by the song and the video I was like who are these guys, they look kinda blue collar and the music is gritty rock but also weird and heady... still love that album I agree with you every song is good and it flows... then I went backwards and found Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes and Vampire on Titus which are still some of my favorite albums of all time from anybody.... Jellyfish Reflector ... I remember buying that back when I used to make pilgrimages to Amoeba music in Berkeley CA and I'd snatch up anything by GBV I hadn't heard.... In honor of your commemt I will go listen to Jellyfish tonight AND Fast Japanese Spin Cycle! Thanks for the jolt of artistic inspiration.... G-b-v G-b-v G-b-v!

@ViewbobTrue 29 дней назад
@@kirillkado hey, glad you dug! Welcome to a forever-winding rabbit hole of a discography! This early GbV has a different sound than they'd become famous for some 8-years later. For more of this jangly, funky sound, check out their excellent debut EP Forever Since Breakfast, as well as their LP Devil Between My Toes. Their 1989 record Self-Inflicted Aural Nostalgia is also quite good. Starting in 1992 with Propeller, their sound shifted to a lower-fi Proggy britpop-meets-70s-americana sound and it's FANTASTIC. Their three best albums are Propeller, Vampire on Titus, and Bee Thousand, released back-to-back. Those albums are just amazing no matter what. Hope this helps! You're embarking on quite the journey!!

Had the privilege of Payton Earick ("Peyton Eric") screening this show for me a couple years before it was considered for DVD release. The beginning of the VHS tape was damaged, resulting in the first two songs of their set being dropped from the DVD. I'd seen this version of the band at Canal Street Tavern the same year as this show, but seeing that tape completely refreshed my fuzzy memory! For the record, this vid was shot by the local cable access company, not a home video, as mentioned in the post description. Also, you can catch a fair number of live mid-'90s GbV clips on my channel.

Hey, thank you for the corrections! You'll have to forgive my 'home video' line, I wrote this description after about three pilsner's. It's so cool that you got to see this iteration of the band in thee flesch. I relish my opportunity to enjoy a facsimile of it at home. It's a document on-par with Games For May-era Floyd for me. Yes, your channel's clips have overseen many-an apartment gathering of mine!

Kevin Fennel - he’s awesome. Struggled with the disease of addiction but eventually kicked it’s butt and sober. I hope he is well, healthy and happy. He’s got such a simple kit but beats the h*ll out of it and always in time. My personal fav drummers would be #1 Stewart Copeland, Buddy Rich, John “Bonzo” Bonham, Neil Peart and the unforgettable Keith Moon.
