From the forthcoming album "Strut Of Kings," out on June 28, 2024. Words & lyrics by Robert Pollard, Needmore Songs/Warner Chappell Music (BMI) Guided By Voices Inc Records (c) 2024
Back in 1998, i bought the double CD Matador Best Of, during holidays in California (that's been a great huge moment). What a revelation ! This song is on 1 of the 2 CDs. HELIUM, GUIDED BY VOICES, PAVEMENT, CAT POWER... Do you need more names ??!!! ❤
Hypnotic and full of unpredictable twists, reusing the same major melody in a minor key, throwing in jazz chords like they're cowboy chords. Pollard has the Pop Zeus Midas touch
I love that final drum hit. Knowing it's leading into the album's final track suggests we're ending strong. And as ever, the rest of the tune is going to be added to my straining mental jukebox for perpetuity.
I haven't kept up with GBV much since the 90's but find myself playing them during crate digging sessions more than alot of other stuff from that era. There's a certain outsider art thing for Bob's stuff which has stayed fresh. But alot of other Matador, Pavement, built to-Spill type bands are kinda. Meh sounding..... Nothing against them, both great artists too. Vampire on Titus is the BEST ALBUM but always dissappointed with recording quality even by lo-fi standards. Can you re-do that one please Bob?
But occasionally he throws out something entirely unique in his 5000+ song catalogue. Chain Gang Island is an example, incredible song, nothing like it before or since
@@36Aitken Again, where is this specific melody in the catalog? He does unique (for him) shit all the time. Lizard on a Red Brick Wall is a recent example. Climbing a Ramp being another. Does he repeat genres of rock? Yeah, that’s what songwriters like him tend do. He’s just better at it than everyone else.
